Hi Charlie, From Beaman's Washington County Births, supplement 1760-1860 I found a Joseph L. Thompson, son of John, born in Westerly in 1817. Could he be your guy? No mom was mentioned and I did not find this birth in Arnold's VR. The source Beaman's listed for the above birth was a death record in Westerly in 1870. This same Joseph L. was living in Westerly in 1850 with his wife Mary and a daughter, age 4, whose name I is not clear but looks like Ophelia. All were born in RI. George W. Thompson was living on Pearl St in the 1890s and was a stone cutter. there is no more info than that in the Westerly directories. If George was the son of the above then he was not born when the census was taken. I note that Beaman's calls George W the son of Joseph L. and Harriet Thompson - is there any chance your ancestor married twice? Or is that the wrong George in Beaman's? If you get George W's death certificate it may show the birthplace of his father or it may not - some are much more complete than others from that time frame. The 1880 census shows a George Thompson living in Manchester, Hartford, CT with his parents Joseph, born 1810 in CT and Eunice. Does anything sound like it might be right? Take care and hope something clicks, Donna
