    1. [RIWASHIN] George Gardiner b. ca. 1779 m. Dorcas (--) Exeter, RI
    2. Hi, I found a will abstract for Dorcas Gardiner, daughter of Nicholas and Dorcas (??Gardiner??) Gardiner, dated in 1811 in Exeter. In it Dorcas names her siblings including a brother George who married a Dorcas. Exeter cemetery records show that this George and Dorcas are buried there and he was born ca. 1779. I cannot find a George in the list of children for Nicholas Gardiner by either of his wives. His first wife Martha died long before this George was born. His second wife, Dorcas, also died in 1775 so she's ruled out as well. There is nothing in Arnold's about this George who m. Dorcas although the other children of Nicholas by both wives are named in his will. George's will also does not name a son George. Dorcas, his youngest daughter, and the one who names her brother George in her will, was born 1760 - that is a long gap from 1760 to 1779 plus there is no record of Nicholas having married a 3rd time. Nicholas made his will in 1801 so George was alive at the time. Who is the George Gardiner who married Dorcas?? Dorcas Gardiner, d/o Nicholas calls him her brother but is it possible Dorcas was actually his mother?? Or could he have been an illegitimate child of one of her sisters? Or is there another meaning of brother that I am missing - to my knowledge these people were not Quakers so there is not a religious connotation. The children of Nicholas Gardiner and their spouses were: Mary Gardiner b. 1732 m. Oliver Reynolds William Gardiner b. 1734 m. Martha Reynolds Margaret Gardiner b. 1736 m. William Reynolds Nicholas Gardiner b. 1737/38 m. Honor Brown, Ruth Tillinghast and Deborah Vincent Martha Gardiner b. 1739 m. Stephen Arnold Ann Gardiner b. 1741 m. Samuel Morey Elizabeth Gardiner b. 1743 m. Daniel Champlin Huling Gardiner b. 1745 m. Elizabeth Northup Those children were by Martha Havens. Children by second wife Dorcas were: James Gardiner b. 1750 married Patience(--) Sylvester Gardiner b. 1752 m. Hannah Reynolds Francis Gardiner b. 1755 m. Waite West Dorcas Gardiner b. 1760 whose will names George Gardiner and wife Dorcas. I have not gotten the actual will as yet and it is always possible something was transcribed incorrectly into Beaman's. Has anyone else worked on this line and/or do you know who George Gardiner was? I have not gotten wills or abstracts for Dorcas Gardiner's sibs to see if any of them called George a brother. Dorcas was certainly the right age to have been George's mother:) There are lots of unconnected Gardiners out there in Exeter and this line may own some of them :) It's obvious also that this Gardiner clan must have lived really close to the reynolds family! Thanks, Donna, snowed in here in RI
