I did an area search trying to find her parents or core family with out a lot of success. I did find various Downings around Southern New England and there were Downings on the Island such as Dan mentioned on rateable polls in 1744, Thomas and Moses were working on the Harbor in 1740. There are two other female Downing marriages as well, Desire married Nat Dodge in 1732, and your Rathbone marriage. Moses married a Mary Adams from South Kingstown and were having children in the 1740's. The only other Moses Downing was in 1790 in Easton Mass. census. There were four Downing girls in Westerly in the 1740's. So like I mentioned, no early core families that I have found so far. They just pop up on Block Island and dissapear. No land evidence probates or anything else.

LaVerne, my grandfathr's first wife was my grandmother, Mary Elliott from NJ. Lillian was the wife after Helen died. LaVerne's parents were John Moir Duguid and Esther Cooper. Esther lived in Pawcatuck until her death. William and Isabella were my grandfather's grandparents. I also, had an Uncle LaVerne, he died several years ago from lung cancer. I was lucky enough to get a copy of my g-grandfathers obit from DE from 1959. It listed a brother in Maryland, so I checked the internet for sons or grandson and located my g-grandfathers two neices 75 & 82 who had family history with pictures. I now go back 13 generations on the Duguid side. Also found a Jim Duggan from Austrailia. We share the same gggg-grandparents. Amazing. Well, enough of my search, It was nice of you to e-mail me. I do get homesick although I was just in Mystic & Pawcatuck in Sept. for my sister's 25th. Have a happy holiday season. Cathy

Hope you're enjoying life out there in "sunny California." Thanks for getting back to me on LaVerne. I haven't seen JoAnn since my father's funeral 4 years ago. Although our family grew up in Pawcatuck, we rarely had much contact with our Mystic cousins when we were kids. However, I will say that JoAnn's mother, Aunt Helen O'Keefe Dugid, was my favorite O'Keefe aunt. She was a nice lady. She died young, from cancer I believe. Who was LaVerne's first wife? I assume she was your grandmother? Or was your grandmother the Lillian that LaVerne married after Aunt Helen died? Do you know LaVerne's parents names? And were the William and Isabella Dugid you mention in your first email the grandparents of LaVerne? Larry O'Keefe

I now live in CA and miss not being able to access the local libraries for information. Yes, LaVerne was my grandfather. My father, Walter (deceased) had a half-sister Joann. I believe that her mother was Helen O'Keefe. Joann helped me get started with what she could remember. Unfortunately, I didn't get interested in the family tree until after everyone had passed away. If you are in touch with Joann, tell her I said hi. Cathy Duguid Alosio

Do you have access to the GAZETTEER or newspaper accounts in Rhode Island in the 1700's to help in researching? Also, who is father of David Daly Esq. born Dec. 4, 1767, in Windham, VT, James or David Daly? Thanks for your help,Jan Jordan in Northern VermontI received the rest of this from Margaret; her cousin, Stewart Riley III, wrote quoted data in 1950s: On the David Daly Esq page: "Father or grandfather was born at sea, his father buried at sea, mother died soon after landing." "At Boston, orphan boy raised in protestant orphanage. family came from South | Ireland. (these first two sentences were family stories and distant cousins on my side had also heard this." "Orphan became peddler and was murdered for his money and his pack of linens. Body was found buried in field and identified by double teeth in front. " Then on another page of a pedigree ch! art for Frederick Trenk Daly he has as his father David Daly Esq, (Jr) b 1767) and that David's father as David Daly married, one son, travelling merchant murdered by a thief - Mrs. Eugene Martin for Info., Town Clerk Pittsfield, VT. ____________ But he wasn't the only one who had the info re someone being murdered; Bob Dean who also had that. And George Mustain who had the Rhode Island death for James. My cousin had no James at all as he thought David Daly Esq.'s father was David Daly.
