    3. Hi Donna, My gg grandfather had a son that worked in the quarries on Westerly and I think he died in Westerly on 21 Feb 1900. His name was George Thompson and he was born in Stonington. Is there any resource that you have that would show anything on George? In particular, I am wondering if his death cert would show the place of birth of his father, Joseph Loomer Thompson. Thanks, Charlie King gg grandson of Joseph Loomer Thompson born 1821 someplace in CT Donna wrote: > "Hi Ron, > Westerly had a large granite quarry, so that would explain why > > stonemasons would be there. 3. Westerly, RI, had a quarry industry, granite I believe. They employed many Italian immigrants to work in the quarries. The Westerly Library has quite a lot of historical information. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Reed" <rwreed@attbi.com> To: <RIWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 08, 2003 11:15 PM Subject: [RIWASHIN] City Directories > Greetings list members. 1. [RIWASHIN] Reed, Westerly, RI
    2. Robert Leonard
    3. I am told, but certainly not sure of this story about my gm, Cathalene Mabel Higgins who ran away with a man named Reed (first name unknown). At the time she was "underage", whatever that meant, and her mother Gertrude Higgins had the marriage "annulled." She (my gm) must have had a son by that man. The child was named Donald, and in later years he became Donald Reed Higgins. Does anyone have any thought about this man Reed? In the 1900 Census the Larkums (my ggm) and my gm (Higgins) and mother were all living in Westerly. In the 1920 Census my ggm, Gertrude Larkum was living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, OH with her brother Charles E. Sharp and her son Henry B. Larkum. What a mess trying to track these people. I hope someone can shed some light on me. Thanks, robert leonard

    1. [RIWASHIN] SULLIVAN COAL MINERS
    2. Seeking any information on the family of Giles Sullivan and Mary Anne Connolly who, shortly after their marriage in Allihies, February 1871, came to Portsmouth, RI from the Beara Peninsula, County Cork. Their first two children, Margaret Anne and Ellen were born in Portsmouth before the family settled in Fall River. Any information on their early life in Portsmouth would be appreciated. Paula

    1. [RIWASHIN] MORE CONNOLLY MINERS
    2. Seeking any information on the family of Timothy Connolly and Margaret Sullivan.  They arrived in Portsmouth, RI from the Beara Peninsula in Cork, Ireland following the mining strike of 1864. Their fifth child Patrick was born in Portsmouth, RI in 1865. Timothy, Margaret and five of their children appear in the 1870 census for Portsmouth.  The family eventually settled in Fall River, but the oldest son Timothy J. Connolly stayed to work in the mines.  He married Elizabeth Cocoran, who was born in Portsmouth, RI, and he died in Fall River in 1940. Is anyone researching this family?        Paula

    2. Hi Ron, Westerly had a large granite quarry, so that would explain why stonemasons would be there. One of my immigrants from England was also a stonemason who came to Westerly. There are some city directories at ancestry.com for Westerly covering the years from 1888-1892 that I know of. How early were your Reeds in Westerly and what were the given names of the folks you are researching? I have some resources that might track them down. Take care, Donna in RI

    2. Ron Reed
    3. Greetings list members. I have been a list member for the past few months, watching the passing conversations and looking for connections to my research. I now want to jump in! My Reed family came from Cornwall England and bounced around between Westerly, RI, New Haven, CT, and Concord, NH. The first photo of my g-grandfather, William Henry Reed, which was taken here in the US was taken in Westerly, RI. In addition, I think I found his sister Bestey (or Bessie) Reed boarding with a Roe family in Westerly in the 1881 census. My Reed ancestors were stone masons, so suspect there was some stone work taking place there in the later 1800's. I have three specific questions, which I am hoping one or more listers can help me with. 1) What were the reasons for my stone mason ancestors to be in Westerly? Were there quarries there? Are there many large stone buildings that perhaps they helped construct? Thoughts? 2) Knowing my Reed's bounced between the three locations noted above, I have found annual City Directories to be very helpful in seeing who was there when. I know they do not contain everyone (as I think it cost 50 cents to be listed), but nonetheless, I have filled in some gaps using this information. Can someone tell me if there are City Directories available for the Westerly area? Where could I find them? Does someone have ready access to Directories from the mid/late 1800's to early 1900's that they could copy Reed listings for me (I'll gladly pay expenses!)? 3) What other local Westerly resources should I try to help fill in the blanks of my ancestors in the mid/late 1800's to early 1900's? Any and all answers, and help greatly appreciated! Regards, Ron Reed

    1. [RIWASHIN] BOURQUE / MARCHAND Marriage
    2. I have been unable to locate the marriage of Alphonse Bourque and Lumina Marchand.  Their daughter Aurore was born 23 January 1888 in "Rhode Island", [no other information given], so they may have been married there. If someone has access to parish records for Rhode Island, I would appreciate it if they could look up a marriage for this elusive couple. Thanks for any help.        Paula
