    2. Charles W King
    3. Edith, William Wright wrote a book "Ancestors and Descendants of William Browning Greene and Mary Hoxie Lewis". I have this book but I didn't find either your James Wilson or your Sarah Hoxie in his book. I will be looking at Charlestown Probate records soon. Charlie King gg grandson of Joseph Loomer Thompson born 1821 prob in Stonington. On Sun, 16 Feb 2003 12:19:28 EST Mooreedith@aol.com writes: Charlie, Thanks a lot for your response to my e-mail. I know there are/were a lot of Hoxie's in the Charleston area of Washington County. Some spell the name with an 's' in it and others don't. I believe the names I gave you might be my great grandparents. It is my best bet. I don't know how to confirm it and just thought maybe some legal papers might give some vital information. My Grandmother was born Sarah Ellen Hoxie in 1860. And according to my research there were more than one Sarah Hoxie's born in that area in that year. My Grandmother went by the name 'Nellie' however....and so the household of James Wilson and Emeline Hox(s)ie seems the most likely to be correct. My Grandmother Sarah E. Hoxie of Charlestown, RI, married Bradford B. Moore of Richmond, RI, in CT in 1892. They then resided for the next 22 years at the Moore homestead.....a place called 'Cliffmore'....Beaver River Valley. I have never been there but my father had taken many pictures dating back to the late 1890s and the early 1900s. My father died before I was old enough to ask questions. An older relative had given the name of her parents differently. So....I am just trying to narrow my search some. I wonder if my great grandparents may have known your Joseph Loomer Thompson? They would probably have married around the same time frame. Anyway.....thanks for your efforts! Edith

    3. Donna - In your research didn't you have a NORRIS JAQUAY? Born in RI, possibly North Minster or some where like that? Have no idea who parents were or any siblings. I have come across a person who must be realted some how, as I have a picture of his ggggrandfather's son and daughters. Haven't written but the gentleman hasn't responded as yet. And I have the name NORRIS in 2 of my relatives. Thanks for any info you can supply Pat Jaquay

I have a few of those orphaned ancestors of my own who just seem to have dropped out of the sky. In some cases probate records, where they existed, helped me track some of them. With less common names I have found help in the census records but Thompson is fairly common compared to Jackways :) Good luck, Donna

    3. Hi Donna, Thanks for the information, especially on the information ususally containg in death certificates. I have been looking for the parents or birthplace of my gg grandfather, Joseph Loomer Thompson for years. Here is what I know ( I am recalling this from memory and not checking dates from my files). There are three Joseph L Thompsons who were born in the Westerly/Stonington area in the early 1800's: 1. Joseph Lewis Thompson, born about 1810, who was a sailor and died at sea about 1840 2. Joseph Latham Thompson who married Mary Pendleton and had a daughter Ophiela. He seems to have been a merchant. He is the JLT you found in Beamon. 3. Joseph Loomer Thompson, a farmer, who was born 1821 probably in Stonington and who died in North Stonington in 1887. He married Harriet Harvey in Charlestown in 1840. This couple are my gg grandparents. They had about 9 children. Warren P who died in East Greenwich in the 1890s (parents birthplace not listed), William H (I have no information on him), Joseph E who died in Westerly in 1899 (parent's birthplace not listed), George W ( who died in Stonington in 1900), and Thomas O who was married in North Stonington in the 1890's (probably a second marriage) are among the children that I know something about. There was also Sarah who was my mother's grandmother who died in Pawtucket RI. Yes, you have found my ggg uncle George W Thompson. He was a stone cutter in Westerly and that is him in the Westerly Directory. I have been searching the parents or birthplace of Joseph Loomer Thompson for about 10 years and have found a lot about him but nothing leads to his parents or to his birthplace. My current theory is that he might be the son of Nathan Thompson (born to John Thompson and Anna Rathbone of Westerly) and Sarah Babcock. This couple lived in Westerly and Stonington CT. Nathan died about 1840 in Westerly after living on the Stephen H Babcock farm in North Stonington. If you run across anything on Joseph Loomer Thompson or have any ideas that you think might help, I sure would appreciate you remembering me. QUESTION: My next step is to try looking in obituaries and probate records to see if I can find any clues there. What do you think? Is that a good/logical approach? Thanks for your help, Charlie King gg grandson of Joseph Loomer Thompson born 1821 someplace in CT On Sun, 9 Feb 2003 20:21:39 EST DonnaRNCEN@aol.com writes: > Hi Charlie, > From Beaman's Washington County Births, supplement 1760-1860 I > found a > Joseph L. 3. Donna, Thank you very much for your reply. My Reeds were John Reed, Mary Reed, Bessie Reed, William Reed, John Reed, and Joseph Reed. Also possibly a Walter Reed. John Reed, the father, came over first in 1869 (per census entries). Then his wife and children followed, one by one. The first photo of my g-grandfather William Henry (born 1866), taken here in the US was taken in Westerly RI. I think I may have found Bessie (listed as Betsey) and John (the son) in Westerly in the 1880 census. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated! 1. [RIWASHIN] Bentley Cemetery, Richmond
    2. Looking for information on Richmond Historical Cemetery #RD0032 possibly known as the "Bentley Cemetery" where some of my ancestors may be buried. My information shows that the cemetery was recorded but not checked. Of particular interest are William Bentley who lived on the Beaver River in the Shannock Purchase from 1714/5 until 1758 when he moved to the Wood River. Also his sons George, Caleb, William Jr. and daughter Elizabeth who married Nathaniel Potter, all of whom also lived on the Beaver River during this period. George sold his land to Ichabod Potter, father of Nathaniel and moved from the Beaver River in 1732, to the Wood River and thence to the Pawcatuck River in Westerly in 1740. Caleb moved to Jamestown in 1738 and William Jr. moved to Rensselaer Co. NY about 1783. I am most interested in his eldest son John who lived on the Wood River from 1731 until about 1786. They occupied the same land but because of the political separation of Charlestown from Westerly and then Richmond from Charlestown, they are found in different town records. Any other information on these ancestors would be appreciated. Larry Bentley

    2. Hi Charlie, From Beaman's Washington County Births, supplement 1760-1860 I found a Joseph L. Thompson, son of John, born in Westerly in 1817. Could he be your guy? No mom was mentioned and I did not find this birth in Arnold's VR. The source Beaman's listed for the above birth was a death record in Westerly in 1870. This same Joseph L. was living in Westerly in 1850 with his wife Mary and a daughter, age 4, whose name I is not clear but looks like Ophelia. All were born in RI. George W. Thompson was living on Pearl St in the 1890s and was a stone cutter. there is no more info than that in the Westerly directories. If George was the son of the above then he was not born when the census was taken. I note that Beaman's calls George W the son of Joseph L. and Harriet Thompson - is there any chance your ancestor married twice? Or is that the wrong George in Beaman's? If you get George W's death certificate it may show the birthplace of his father or it may not - some are much more complete than others from that time frame. The 1880 census shows a George Thompson living in Manchester, Hartford, CT with his parents Joseph, born 1810 in CT and Eunice. Does anything sound like it might be right? Take care and hope something clicks, Donna
