There are many Seth Whites. It seems all living at the same time. It's funny, yesterday I was reading and looking into James from Rhode Island. Today I get to communicate with a descendant! This is so fun. I have come to believe that I may be related to the Nicholas White family, however, I just found a document that refers to him as a cousin of Nicholas and Phillip. Dr. Arthaud wrote an article in TAG in 1972(not sure of exact date) claiming that Abel White was the unrecorded son of Nicholas White. I don't think so anymore. Especially in light of his military service in the French and Indian War. HE would have been only 12 at the time he served. Then again maybe all the dates are wrong. He also served with a company comprised of men from Windham county. He was born in Woodstock. I think a trip to Woodstock is in order. I Live in New Canaan.; This wouldn't be too far for me Thanks again. Let me know if I can help you in anyway.

Seth White, Jr. who was born in Norton on April 15, 1745 had a brother named James who is my ancestor. Both were in the Revolutionary War. They were living in Westerly, Rhode Island during the war. Seth Jr. then moved to Connecticut and lived there a few years and then got his pension in New York. I will watch for this name and let you know if I can locate the connection between the two families. You may very well be a descendent of Nicholas White who imigrated to the US. But, I question whether you are a direct descent of the Seth White born in Norton in 1745.

My sister has been lurking on the mailing list and sent me this contribution on the subject of the Smiths, Gereardys and the Hollimans. "Have been following some of this Gereardy business and spent the afternoon looking through Donald D'Amato's book on the 350th Anniversary of Warwick. he states, "Warwick's Town Charter was adopted on March 14, 1648, and a Town Council consisting of John Green, EZEKIEL HOLLIMAN, John Warner, Rufus Barton, John Wickes were named magistrates..." He also was one of the purchasers in the Ox Pasture Lots in 1674. There is a map in the book and it looks like pretty much all of Spring Green and the Brown's property. Also since you (me) left home, they built a grammar school named for Ezekiel off Fairfax Drive near the rear of the Pilgrim Post Office. So he's pretty definitely a Warwick resident from way back. A woman, also a Tallman descendent. wrote a well researched paper on his life. It is referenced on the Tallman web site, TallmanL@rootsweb.com. Some of the other stuff is from family history and from a paper on the China Trade published by the University of Rhode Island Maritime people. If you live in Rhode Island the South County Museum in Narragansett has some stuff on the maritime use of Narragansett Bay. Check to see if it is still there. The DNA test of Tallman descendents is also interesting. My brother did it and it came out positive, It can only be done with men descended directly from men. Actually, I have two Tallman ancestors, both sons of Peter, they are Jonathan and Benjamin. ----- Original Message ----- From: <DonnaRNCEN@aol.com> To: <RIWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 04, 2003 2:04 PM Subject: Re: [RIWASHIN] Smiths, Gereardys nd Reynolds > In a message dated 5/4/2003 10:52:12 AM Eastern Standard Time, > genevatm@comcast.net writes: > > > > accept the challenge for New Amsterdam trade, curious behavior et al. > > This is about one of my ancestors, Peter Tallman, originally Peter Taelmann > > Hi, > Peter is also my ancestor. Where did you get all the information on him? That was very interesting! Donna Potter
I accept the challenge for New Amsterdam trade, curious behavior et al. This is about one of my ancestors, Peter Tallman, originally Peter Taelmann. His family started out in Friesland, Netherlands, then to Ghent and then to Hamburg, Germany, where Peter was born. He was christened on Feb 20, 1623. He emigrated to Barbados, Christchurch, and while there married Ann Hill from Providence, RI. In 1659 he, his wife, her mother and her brother together with an indentured servant, Thomas Durfee, four slaves, and a number of products to sell sailed to Newport on The Golden Dolphin. Captain Maverick, son of Samuel from Noddles Island was in charge of the ship. Peter was an apothecary by trade and spoke German, Dutch and English. He soon established trade with various places including Martha's Vineyard, New Amsterdam, specifically Flushing, Delaware and New Jersey and Virginia. Now the good part, upon returning from a trading trip he discovered his wife was having a child who could not possibly be his. He accused her of adultery which she readily admitted. He took her to court where he charged her, and she made statements to the effect she no longer wanted to be married to him. She was fined and sentenced to be whipped in three different locations in Newport. However, she escaped and went to Virginia where her brother and mother were. In about a year she returned, I think was never whipped, and married Thomas Durfee, the indentured servant who was the father of her child. Peter went on to marry two more times, first Joan/Joanna Briggs and after she died, Esther Mars(there is some question about this name). Altogether he had 21 or 22 children, accounts differ. He also acquired the land in Portsmouth which is now Anthony's Farm, Common Fence Point and Island Park. He also bought part of Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard for which he was jailed, as it was prohibited to buy land from Indians. He sold off Anthony's Farm and also Common Fence Point, the latter to Thomas Durfee, I guess there were no hard feelings. He seems to have been rather cantankerous as he pops up in records as not having built his part of a road, or improperly installed some fencing, or being in general involved in petty controversy. He died April 1st in 1708. His grandson Benjamin Tallman married Elizabeth Gorton, and he was a clipper ship builder who built for the China Trade and the Browns of Providence. My gggrandfather, also Benjamin Tallman set up a fish trap business in the Sakonnet River which employed many Tallmans. My grandfather Albertus Edwards Tallman was the first to break with the tradition by becoming a baker on Main Street in Wakefield, RI. He was a cook on a ship as a young man, the ship was wrecked, and he had to rescued by breeches buoy. That was the end of the sea for him. Now, I am also a Tefft, my gggrandmother having been Eliza Tefft married to William Wheeler Moore, but that is a story for another day. BTW. I always thought Joshua Tefft, was a hero for befriending and being befriended by Indians. But as they say, victors get to write the history books. TaTa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barry H. Hi RI Rooters; Recently, cousins Donna Potter and Barry Browning have had correspondence regarding the confusing Smiths and their relationship to the notorious Gereardys. While I am descended from Richard Smith, the Smiths above are descended from John Smith. I mistakenly got involved wih this line when I thought that my Mary Reynolds who married John Tefft was the daughter of Robert Reynolds (her father actually was Thomas 2, John 1 of Westerly), but............that is another story. If you really want to read about the Gereardys, get out your CD #180, RI Genealogies Vol 1, p 486. A wonderful treatise on Jan Gereardy and his father Phillip, and their nefarious activities. This article confirms that Jan's wife was Renewed Sweet, nee Maribah, but her name changed when her mother remarried to Ezekiel Holliman. Who was he with a name like Ezekiel to change his stepdaughter's name?? Savage also mentions this name change in his Genealogical Dictionary of New England. Secondly, yes, Phyllis Gereardy's sister Mary did marry her husband John Smith's brother Jeremiah. John also had a brother Daniel, and sisters Mary and Hannah.
