    3. Hi Claire, I am trying to find parents of Abigail Tucker b 1764 d 1850 m Thomas Webster Sr b 1757-Richmond, d 1837. I have Abigail fa. as Nathan Tucker b1738 Westerly, d1826- Charlestown and her mo. as Rebecca Worden or Dorcas Worden. Abigail has a brother Gardiner Tucker. I'm not wondering if this could be a Gardiner-Worden family too. Actually - I am totally confused. Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated. 3. My family (DEAKE/ DAKE) who originated in Hopkinton, RI in the very early 1700's has crossed the LEWIS family many times. The earliest being the marriage of Mary Lewis (believe her father to be John Lewis and Mary Lamphere) to RICHARD DEAKE in Westerly about 1711. This may have been a second marriage for her. You can find more LEWIS marriages on my web site book at www.dakehome.com At 12:15 PM 5/24/2003, you wrote: >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Surnames: YORK, LEWIS, FOSTER, AND WYETH >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XcB.2ACE/324 > >Message Board Post: > >I am looking for any info on the LEWIS Families and the YORK Families who >lived in WESTERLY, WASHINGTON CO, RHODE ISLAND for a time. > >They also lived in NORTH STONINGTON, CT for a time. Some of what I do have is: > >I am looking for a ZEBULON LEWIS (1734 - 1826) who married MARY YORK >(1757-1828) >MARY YORK was born 1757 in STONINGTON, NEW LONDON CO, CT >ZEBULON LEWIS was born in WESTERLY, WASHINGTON CO, RI >They had several children including: >ZEBULON LEWIS, JR.- born January 1779(Petersburg, NY); died May 1862(Hope, NY) >SIMEON LEWIS - born 1780 (Petersbugh, NY); died in PA >DAVID LEWIS - born February 1782(Petersburg, NY); died August 1867 >(location ?) >JABEZ YORK LEWIS - born May 1790(Petersburg, NY); died February >1884(Williamstown, Berkshire, MA) >PHOEBE CRAWFORD LEWIS - born 1796(Petersburg, NY) >POLLY MAXSON LEWIS - born 1798 (Petersburg, NY) >SARAH BROWN LEWIS - born 1798 (Petersburg, NY) >STEPHEN LEWIS - born 1802 (Petersburg, NY) > >I WOULD APPRECIATE ANYONE WITH ANY INFO WHO CAN CONFIRM ANY OF THE ABOVE >INFORMATION TO PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH WHAT SOURCE DATA YOU MAY HAVE ON >THESE INDIVIDUALS, THEIR BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, DEATHS, AND CHILDREN! > >My Line from the above is through the son of Jabez who married Lydia >Foster and had the following children: >Charles Byron Lewis (b 10/18/1839 in Johnston, Ohio; died February 3, 1892 >in Newark, Licking County, OHIO) >Jabez D. 3. Using Michael L. Cook, "Lewis Families," Vol. 1, I show Zebulon-4 as the son of John-3 and Mercy (Burdick) Lewis, James-2 and Sarah (Babcock) Lewis, John-1 Lewis (wife unknown). Zebulon's birth is in Arnold, "Vital Records of Rhode Islane," Vol 5: Westerly. Zebulon is listed on page 374 of my book, "Ancestors and Descendants of William Browning Greene and Mary Hoxsie Lewis with Allied Families." Details of Zebulon's Lewis and Babcock ancestry is in the book with source references (both secondary and primary). The Mormon Church Archives is a good place to get started but it is always best for one to get the original documentation - Recently I contacted a person who had generations on a family I was searching for and asked where he obtained his information and he told me-that everything he had sent in was now proven to be wrong and has not even tried to have the information taken off line- that is why I say always get the proof of the source. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Gene13717@aol.com> To: <RIWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 25, 2003 9:52 AM Subject: Re: [RIWASHIN] LEWIS and YORK Families in WESTERLY, WASHINGTON CO, RHODE ISL... > Most of the info you seek can be verified with Mormon church archives. 2. Hi Barry, Your note 5/17 mentions your cousins the Whalleys, and their relationship to Judge Whalley, one of the English Parliamentarians responsible for the execution of Charles I. During the Restoration of Charles II, Whalley and others were charged with regicide, and pursued actively by the British. While researching my wife's ancestors, I found that her 10th great grandfather, Edward Riggs, harbored both Whalley and Goff, two of the fugitives, while Edward was in charge of a stockade in Derby, CT. Interestingly, when the Dutch ceded northern New Jersey to the English in 1665, Edward emigrated from Derby, and became one of the founders of Newark, NJ, on the beautiful Passaic River. I also have a couple of Quaker > grandmothers who were whipped at the post and "carted" thru town in > Massachusetts, and a couple of grandfathers who were kidnaped and thrown in > jail during the dispute between Massachusetts and Connecticut over the Rhode > Island territory. Makes my life seem dull. ....Yes, I can remember my cousin the late Dr. Harold Browning, for many years VP of the University of Rhode Island...making reference to the conflicting claims of nearby colonies to our "unsettled lands", and those of our kith and kin who were "unfairly imprisoned"...with a certain inflection in his voice to indicate that the Bay Colony and the Hartford/Connecticut Colony were even now...not fully forgiven... And RI Quakerism....went far to rectify the odiousness of Black/Indian slavery in the Narragansett Country...quite the largest slaveholding area in all New England...(as we read our census results through the early years...) Perhaps the saddest of all concerns for local genealogy is that there are practically no traceable records to show the ancestry of so many of South County's native Indian and black people....who have been here from the first... ....As for religious meddling...well...I still have in mind a certain image of the amply-built Rev. McSparren, His Majesty's Anglican Church Cleric for the King's County....I understand that the pulpit/sounding board had to be equally solid to support his weight....the job must have paid him amply...was he not guaranteed an income from the local colonists, as often happened in the southern colonies? I'm also amused by the story of the Episcopal Church dispute wherein the church, then located on Scrabbletown Road near Slocum and the North/South Kingstown line, was...in the dark of the night, put on sleds, and...dragged to Wickford, where it remained...the opposing faction woke to find no church building and a "fait accompli"! Best, as always, Barry Browning

Rev. Edward Wightman, 1570 - 1612, was the last person burned at the stake for heresy in England. There is a plaque which marks the spot, and which I visited while in London. It's interesting to know you have relatives who were drawn and quartered, and burned at the stake. I also have a couple of Quaker grandmothers who were whipped at the post and "carted" thru town in Massachusetts, and a couple of grandfathers who were kidnaped and thrown in jail during the dispute between Massachusetts and Connecticut over the Rhode Island territory. 2. Barry H. Browning
    3. Dear Washington County/South County RI friends: ..."Everybody knows, and nobody says" (An old South County saying I grew up hearing...and so we were taught...not to ask!) ...My own version: "Everybody thinks they know, and nobody's checked it out for at least 40 years..." ...Take for example this list...in the past three years, it has broadened considerably what I thought I knew about South County families....and I am grateful for the expanded perception I've been gaining, of a place I deeply love... ...Now I'm focusing on a new saying... ..."Nobody knows everything, but everybody knows something..." ...For example, I feel that by now, (for obvious reasons), I have a pretty solid, yet broad-based global "handle" on the history and local legends surrounding my Brownings and Tuckers....and through them, a little bit on maternal line Whaleys, Congdons, Larkins, Tuckers, Crosses, Greenes, Halls, Clark(e)s, Ste(a)dmans, Gard(i)ners, Greenes, North(r)ups, Kenyons, Georges, Burdicks, Barbers, Hulings, Hox(s)ies, Roses, etc.etc.etc., but...there must be dozens of areas where what I know would help others, and where what others know would help me and everyone else understand the whole of South County history much better than we do... What I'm asking is, is it appropriate to ask if listusers would volunteer to post a bibliography of book sources and web sources for stories, legends, biographical information on their own local surnames? Would it also be appropriate if each of us were to "hit the high points" historically, on the South County surnames we do follow, posting abbreviated bio info of historical importance? For example, I'm simply fascinated by my Whal(l)ey cousins' connection to the mysterious Judge Whal(l)ey, one of the high court judges under Cromwell who helped condemn King Charles I to death...then after the Restoration, hid over half of New England until finally settling down to his final hiding place in the Narragansett Country somewhere next to where the Glebe was, and where the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace is now... As some of you know, I'm also fascinated by the famous Gard(i)ner line matriarch, the notorious Herodias Long-Hicks-Gardiner-Porter, (sometime) common-law wife to George1 Gardiner...and...thanks to the Tefft Association, I know about fifth-great-uncle Joshua Tefft, the only New Englander/South Countyite ever....drawn and quartered for high treason (eaugh!)...and I ask myself: I descend from ten or so generations of locals, yet I have only heard many of these stories in the past three years, and almost always from internet sources such as this list! So...how many other South County stories of family deeds and adventures are there out there which I've not yet heard about...which many/most of you may not yet have heard about as well? It's just a thought...but what do you all think about sharing these things? Appreciatively, as always, Barry Hale Browning

(mini-rumination off....) ....You say the Dye(r)s are from Yawgoo....meaning...Yagoo ([Clam]Bakes) in Slocum/North Kingstown? Meaning...Yawgoo Pond by Wincheck Pond in Hopkinton/Westerly? 3. How do you know that the Dyers are not a different spelling of Dyer? I am connected to the Dyers through my ggrandmother, Almy Moore, whose nephew married a Dyer from Yawgoo, which I believe is where the Dyers have lived for ages. We are about to open our cottage at the Pond. We have had a winter tenant, namely a skunk, who lived under the foundation of the cottage. I am hoping she goes away, it is a "she". It will have to warm up more than it is now before I go to stay for the summer. ----- Original Message ----- From: <barrybro@twave.net> To: <RIWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 12, 2003 11:07 PM Subject: [RIWASHIN] Re: Dye family of Washington Co., R.I. > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Browning, Tucker, Larkin, Worden, (and half of South County!) > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XcB.2ACE/261.1 > > Message Board Post: > > I know about the Dye family of Washington County RI...(esp. Abbie Dye....can't confirm her upline, but I'm reasonably sure that #1 it is NOT of the Little Compton Dyers, and #2, it is connected to the small line of Dyes who show up in the Richmond area in the late 18th and early 19th century.... I don't know why the official records on this family appear to be undercovered, but...there you have it! Anyway...at least we know that there are some Dyes in the county, and most, if not all of them were in Richmond township(which was before that part of Charlestown RI township, which was originally, in turn....a part of old Westerly, RI....so records for them could be in any one of these three town halls, and possibly also in the South Kingstown RI town hall.... > If I can help further, please let me know! > > My very best wishes, Barry Hale Browning > > > ==== RIWASHIN Mailing List ==== > RI Cemeteries Index http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/ > Visit RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative: http://www.rootsweb.com/ > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
