Correct me if I am wrong. \ ....No need to, as you're "on the money", as it were....and for you and the list, here's a great example of what I mean by "Washington County Consanguinuity", or....marrying someone who was..."no more'n 'n ox-caht roide away f'um each othah"! ...By (Cousin) Edward Franklin Browning's reckoning...he the author of "Brownings in America"...you are of the South Kingstown William3 Browning line...(I am too, but this is not my paternal Browning line!) Now...of William3 Browning 1693-1773 m. Mary Wilkinson, I have seven children, Wilkinson, John, Mary, Dinah, Ruth, Joseph and Tabitha....and of these seven siblings, fully three marry their Browning first cousins by their uncle (my) John3 Browning.... ...now follow this carefully....William3 Browning and Mary Wilkinson's son John4 Browning marries....Ann4 Browning, she the dau. of John3 Browning m. Ann Hazard...so each of these two marries his/her Browning first cousin....and then William3 Browning and Mary Wilkinson's daughter Mary4 Browning....also marries her Browning first cousin Thomas4 Browning, he also the son of John3 Browning m. Ann Hazard.....that makes....two first cousin marriages.......and then William3 Browning and Mary Wilkinson's daughter Ruth4 Browning...well...she ups and marries...her first cousin Jeremiah4 Browning....he also the son of John3 Browning m. Ann Hazard.....and that makes...three first cousin Browning marriages! Yeow! ....Now...I don't have spouses for....siblings Wilkinson4 Browning and Joseph4 Browning...both sons of William3 Browning m. Mary Wilkinson....but for their daughter Tabitha4 Browning I have....Benjamin Gardiner...as her spouse, and...for her sister, your Dinah4 Browning, I have as her spouse....Stephen Champlin Jr., he the son of....Stephen Champlin and...Mary Hazard...hmmmmm....is this Mary Hazard related to Dinah4 Browning's mother Ann Hazard? Aha! Our Ann Hazard's grandfather...Thomas Hazard m. Mary Brownell....is Stephen Champlin's gggrandfather! ...So what's the score so far? Of...seven William3 Browning kids, we have three clearly crossing bloodlines by marrying kids of William3 Browning's brother John3 Browning....and we have some Hazard blood crossing again...in the fourth marriage of your Dinah4 Browning and Stephen Champlin......and....I'm not even trying hard! Honest, folks, I...just peeked at the database so far! ...So let's go for it....lessee....Wilkinson Browning....son of William3 Browning and Mary Wilkinson....married...Huh! Susannah Hazard, dau. of Jeffrey and Mary Hazard...well this could take some time....but...anyway, Cousin Claire, we've started something! My very best regards, Barry Hale Browning > Claire > > > ==== RIWASHIN Mailing List ==== > The RI Archives http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ri/rifiles.htm > RIGenWeb Archives Search > http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/ri/risearch.html > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >

    3. Hello Ms. Susan! Re: John3 Browning m. Ann Hazard of South Kingstown, Washington County, RI If everyone else on list will forgive me, and for Ms. Susan and Cousin Lauren's sake, and since Ms. Susan's e-mail address doesn't appear to be correct/working, (or I have the wrong one...), I'll post what I know of my paternal 6th-great-grandparents of my direct line: I'm glad to tell you whatever I can...(Please see ellipses....below) "Can anyone tell me anything about John Browning and Ann Hazard Browning?" ...John(3) Browning, the...progenitor of the so-called "John Browning Line" of South Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island (Colony), was one of three grandsons of Nathaniel(1) Browning, first known of this browning line who arrived from England and lived in Portsmouth, (then known as "Pocasset", ) Aquidneck Island, Newport County(where the colonial port of Newport, Rhode Island is), RI.... The first inhabitants of Pocasset/Portsmouth were the so-called "Antinomians" under Ann Marbury Hutchinson, who rebelled against the severity of the Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritanism, and were expelled from that colony to....what we natives call our native home..."Rogue's Island", or what became the Rhode Island Colony. These same Antinomians wrote the Portsmouth Compact, the first document anywhere to guarantee freedom of religion in a governmental document, and although the Antinomian founding Hutchinsons left the colony some 10 years after, the same spirit of religious freedom-of-conscience independence was transferred to George Fox's religion of Quakerism, and so the Browning family, as did most of Portsmouth, became Quakers in the mid 1600s, and stayed so for at least the next six generations. The Portsmouth folk....among them Nathaniel Porter....were caught up in the....land speculation of the undeveloped, unsettled-except-for-the-Native-Peoples Pettasquamiscutt Purchase...and so Nathaniel's son William T.(2) Browning moved across the bay to the new lands of the "Narragansett Country", also th e location in present-day North Kingstown of "Smith's Castle" or Cocumcossoc, the earliest Indian trading post...originally started by Roger Williams himself...in this wild new land...soon to be known as the "disputed lands" or the "King's Countie", then "Kingstowne", and then, after the American Revolution, the county became "Washington County" for obvious reasons, and the original two townships retained the names of North and South Kingstown respectively...(take a breath....exhale..) Eleven generations of Brownings have since lived in these two towns, and in nearby Charlestown(e) since that time.....and until the mid-eighteenth century, most remained Quakers, as had their forefathers. Of William T.(2) Browning's three sons, each became known locally as the head of a separate line of this Browning family, viz the "William(3) Browning line", the "Samuel(3) Browning line" and...your particular interest, and my own direct line, the "John(3) Browning line", all three lines of South Kingstown, Washington County, RI. To my way of thinking, (and except for my third cousin's farm, which has been in this branch of the Browning family since the 1600's...) the John(3) Browning line is, after the Quaker fashion, unremarkable....except for a number of cousins, such as the Moreys, shipbuilders of Newport in part responsible for the building of "Old Ironsides" the Fighting Constitution still U.S. Navy commissioned, and still in Boston harbor....and among others, another West Bay Quaker family, the Potowomuk/Warwick RI Greenes....(Rev. General Nathaniel Greene, second in command under General Washington is a near cousin), and then, of course, there's...our late "Family Totem", the late Dr. Harold Browning, for many years vice-president of the University of Rhode Island. These lines have....intermarried...amongst themselves...and with almost everyone else in "South" County RI....(from the 1600s to at least the 1850s, and even beyond....this was a very...self-contained gene pool....as one of my cousin's husbands said to me only last year...."Barry, they 'us all no more'n 'n ox-caht roide away f'm eech othah!"...and through some...miracle of the Creator...most of our later generations are not....drooling uncontrollably, nor...'following the horse-traces in the fields in endless meandering circles'...but we ARE thankfully blessed with many ORIGINAL personality types....(rant off...). "they are the 4th grandparents of Anne C. Browning." ...But what is this Anne C. Browning's upline? I can't find her in "Brownings in America"...or I can't determine whether one of the Ann(e) Brownings listed there is the right one, unless/until you provide me with something...anything on your Anne C. Browning's parents/grandparents, such as names, dates of b., m. chr., death, etc....anything of this nature might "solve the puzzle:. ...Because this is my direct line I have an extensive database of most of these Brownings....the definitive work, (complete with errors) on them is a privately printed "Genealogy of the Brownings In America, from 1621 to 1908", by Edward Franklin Browning, which is available through the genealogical publishers Higginson's in Boston....but I have my own copy, and am glad to answer your questions. John3 Browning and his wife Ann Hazard were Quakers, as I have said, which I believe cuts down on the odds of there being portraits or drawings of them...nor do either have headstones, in the Quaker manner...but their general area graves are known and marked by a modern stone at the corner of Tower Hill Road and Dale Carlia Corners in South Kingstown, RI...this the South Kingstown Meeting burial ground of the Quakers. Below is my complete file on him: "Aged 81 years at passing." "John Browning was one of the three grandsons of Nathaniel Browning, and as the people of New England were in the habit of speaking of the John Browning line, of which this John Browning is the ancestor, I shall speak of his descendants as of the John Browning line." "He was a farmer, and lived in South Kingston, near the sea coast. He was made a freeman in 1744. The records show that on the 8th of March, 1738, he bought of Jeffrey Hazard a tract of 200 acres, giving 2,000 pounds for it. On Oct. 20, 141, he sold to Stephen Hazard, for 3,000 pounds, a tract of land of 100 acres. On April 27, 1741, he deeded 40 acres to his son Jeremiah of the land bought of Jeffrey Hazard, a relative of his wife. In later years, the Hazard family became very wealthy by manufacturing woolens, their principal mill being at Peacedale, R.I." "John Browning's wife, Ann Hazard, was a great-granddaughter of Thomas Hazard, the emigrant and progenitor of the notable Hazard family in America. This Thomas Hazard was born in 1610, and was one of those who organized the Newport Colony in 1639. Among his sons was Robert Hazard, born in 1650, died 1710. Other sons were George Hazard, who died in 1743, and Jeremiah Hazard, born in 1675, and died 1768. Jeremiah married Sarah Smith, and their daughter, Ann Hazard, married this john Browning (number 6). Jeremiah Hazard's daughter Sarah married Robert Morey, of Newport, R.I., whose daughter Catherine married William T. Browning (number 35). John Browning belonged to the Society of Friends. The will of John Browning, who married Ann Hazard, is recorded as follows:" "Dated Aug. 23, 1770; proved April 14, 1777; Executor, son Jeremiah." To grandsons, Thomas and William, sons of Thomas, deceased, all my lands in South Kingston, being part of my homestead farm, about 100 acres, they pay as hereafter expressed. And to them, 14 acres salt marsh in Charleston. To son Jeremiah, daughter Hanna Frink, daughter Sarah Stanton, son John, son Ephraim, 6 shillings; grand-daughters Temperance and Abigail Frink, a bed; to six children, rest of estate, viz: to Jeremiah, a whole share, Sarah Stanton, 1-4 share, Martha Powers, Anne Browning, Mary Champlin, Eunice Clark, a whole share each, and so divide the whole. Inventory: 106 pounds, 6 shillings, 4 pence, viz: wearing apparel, 7 pounds, 10 shillings, loom, Bible, etc." "John Browning lies buried in the little Quaker burying ground at S. Kingston, R.I., near the factory. (n.b., 1999-2000: hearsay from Thomas Browning11(Maurice10, Thomas9, Robert8, Robert7, Robert6, Robert5, Thomas4, John-referred-to3, William2, Nathaniel1)places this on Tower Hill Road, R.I., Route 1-A, where it passes into Wakefield, at the top of the hill above Dale Carlia Corners. Geaber's Liquors and Hal's Service Station are within visual distance.) A small grey granite headstone, dug from the hills near by, marks the spot where he lies. The simple name, "John Browning," is all that is carved upon it, while at his side a small mound of earth marks the resting place of his wife Ann Hazard, with no tombstone at all to mark the spot. They both lived simple lives and their graves are in accord with the custom of the Quakers at that time." Browning, Edward Franklin; Genealogy of the Brownings in America From 1621 to 1908; Westerly and Robert Beverly Hale Libraries, Washington Co. Rhode Island; pp. 18-19. ********** FREEMEN OF SOUTH KINGSTOWN. -- "A list of freemen belonging to South Kingstown taken from ye Records of ye Late Kingstown September ye 16, 1723. The former List (See North Kingstown) bearing Date the 12th of December, 1696: Moses Barber, Nathaniel Niles, Henry Gardner, Samuel Hopkins, Thomas Hazard, Stephen Hazard, William Congdon, Joseph Hull, William Gardner, Samuel Warden, jr., Samuel Helms, John Watson, jr., James Kinyon, Robert Hannah, George Babcock, Thomas Potter, Robert Potter, Jonathan Turner, John Shelden, jr., Ichabod Potter, Christopher Allen, Daniel McCooun, Joseph Cass, jr., Solomon Carpenter, Abiel Sherman, Stephen Wilcox and son, Nathaniel Gardner, Robert Cass, Henry Gardner, Ephraim Gardner, Benjamin Sheffield, Edmond Sheffield, Daniel Smith, George Hazard, Nathan Niles, Thomas Joslin, John Kinyon, Peter Boss, William Robinson, Richard Mumford, Daniel Knowles, William Mumford, Robert Knowles, Stephen Hazard, jr., Robert Hazard, jr., Joseph Mumford, Jeremiah Sheffield, Emanuel Cass, George Hazard, son of Thomas; John Gardner, Benjamin Mumford, Benjamin Hazard, Thomas Potter, jr., Ichabod Potter, jr., Peleg Mumford, Joseph Congdon, William Clarke, Ephraim Bull, Thomas Kinyon, George Babcock, jr., John Potter, son of Thomas, Samuel Barber, John Browning, Pasco Austin." ...Now...Ann Hazard....the Hazards are a prominent local family....they owned substantial granite cotton mills, and were the first family of the community for several generations...the most recent known Hazard is Ann Hazard Richardson, wife to Elliott Richardson, who was sec'ty of state under Richard Nixon, and who resigned honorably, soon after the Watergate scandal was announced... "We have a deed dated April 24th in the 24th year of his Majesty's Reign George the Second King over Great Britton - AD1751." ...John Browning's dates are b. 4 Mar. 1695/96, and d. 28 Feb. 1700/01...so the timeframe puts him at around age 55... We can find without too much difficulty who were the town clerks and sheriffs during that timeframe.....do you have any witnesses/magistrate/officials signatures? ......I can't help asking...how does the deed concern John Browning? Is it a deed to his property? ....To the extent possible, could I ask you for a photocopy of the document, or even of its pieces? ....Are you able/willing to scan it for this list? "From the info via the internet it seems that John Browning is from South Kingstown. Are there any pictures of this John Browning?" ....None known of by me, and none suspected, due to the Quaker custom already mentioned of avoiding likenesses and gravestone inscriptions.... There is a painting in the family that the family is trying to identify. Appears by the dress of the gentleman to be of the era. Where could I look? ....I don't know...but one thought comes up...this Browning line is known for a rather prominent nose....(I call it the Browning "Eagle Beak:")...see if you can find Cousin Hannah Stillman-Browning's website on Google, (this is four steps further down my own Browning upline.......my dad had it, my near Browning cousins all have it, a North Kingstown Browning from the "Famous Men of Rhode Island" had it, and....I myself would like to know just how far back this physical feature of our Browning line goes... Ann C. Browning from the info we have is from or lived in the Pittsburgh area. Some of the info we have has been written on old envelopes and give to "whomever" around the 1930's. ...If you have just one generation of Brownings above her from those envelopes....and preferably two, as that takes us back to the 1908 era where (Cousin) Edward Franklin Browning's book pretty much covers everybody out there....I could then do a lot more. Right now, I have four Ann Brownings, and none of them seem to match....and none of them are listed with a C. for a middle initial...but for this area I'd suspect Clark(e) as a possibility...but see if the envelopes tell you anything more about her upline on her dad's OR mom's side, and I'll be glad to look for you! We also have the "Brownings in America" index to work with.... BTW...the Heirlines lady is the wife of one of my South Kingstown cousins....for this area it truly IS a small gene-pool....has been that way for some 300 years....(Hi Cousin Lauren!) "FYI - Wallover to the best of my knowledge is not related to Browning. My husband's Aunt was married to a decendent of Browning. ....Could you tell us please the name of your husband's aunt, and the name of her husband who was the Browning descendent? His Uncle's name was John B. Marburger. His family was from the Pittsburgh area. He also has some relatives in Canton, Ohio. The deed in original - hand written, etc. It is very brittle and in many pieces but is readable. Please send your personal email address. Thank you. Susan" ...If I'm understanding you correctly...forgive me....if John B. Marburger is the name of your husband's aunt's...Browning descendant husband...do you know any more about John B. Marburger? Do you know in what state he was born and lived? Do you know any of his dates, birth, christening, marriage, death? (Did the B. middle initial stand for Browning?) Do you know anything at all about his parents/grandparents? Any little thing may be just the "key" to unlock the entire puzzle! ....Also....If I could ask you for a photocopy of the deed, I'd be eternally grateful... ....Any other questions you have, I'll be glad to answer if I can....but unless we find Ann C. Browning's birth/death dates, and in what state....or her parents....grandparents....it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Please let me know If you can give me some more clues...ANY clues...about Ann's uplines...names and dates....and I'll do my very best!
