Hi Sam, Not sure where you live in CA, but the Carlsbad Library, north of San Diego, has a wonderful genealogy floor. I have a library card (free), which I use to access Heritage Quest online. Not sure if you can sign up online. I went to the library and filled out a couple of lines on a form and voila-- I had a library card and number to use online.
