It is on Broad street, a far cry Roger Williams Ave, maybe the one I know, is the wrong one, for you. Ruth -----Original Message----- From: Dotty Cole [mailto:dotango@bellsouth.net] Sent: Friday, March 11, 2005 1:31 PM To: RIPROVID-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [RIPROVID] Death of Valentine Schneider Hi, My husband has received in the mail this death notice from the Providence Journal dated August 3, 1914, which may be for his great grandfather. "Schneider --In this city, on the 2nd August, Valentine Schneider. Funeral services at the home of his son, John Schneider, 55 Rutherglen Avenue Tuesday, the 4th August, at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Jersey City papers will please copy." We had earlier found this at ancestry.com: John and Katherine? Rhode Island Deaths, 1630-1930 Name: Valentine Schneider Kin 1: John Schneider Kin 2: Katherine Schneider Death Date: 02 Aug 1914 Age: 67 yrs and we had written to the RI archives and had received the Death certificate and pages of the "Returns of Births Marriages and Deaths from Jan 1st to Dec 31st 1914" book from which the Death Certificate information came. A call to the Providence Public Library determined that there was a death notice for a Valentine Schneider in their collection of old newspapers. Interestingly enough, John Schneider, my husband's grandfather, moved to Providence from Jersey City, NJ about 1903 and is in the 1910 U.S. Census at 143 Roger Williams Ave., just a couple of block from the Rutherglen address. Also Valentine had a daughter, Katherine, who may have been living in Jersey City at the time of Valentine's death. John Schneider's wife's parents were still living in Jersey City. We really believe this is our Valentine Schneider, and we hoped when we received his death certificate that it would give his place of birth in Bavaria, but no such luck and not even a birth date. Boo Hoo! Our question - (there is no mention of Kin1 and Kin2 on the pages of the "Returns of Births, etc." book.) Where might Ancestry.com have gotten the information on Kin? We are looking for someone who might be able to go to Oakland Cemetery and see what is written on Valentine Schneider's headstone. Probably no more than what is on his death certificate but maybe a birth date will be given. It will be a while before we can get to RI again. Also, has anyone done research with real estate in Providence/Cranston? Can you direct us to where to go to get information on real estate owned by John Schneider at 502 Wellington Avenue, Cranston. John is in that location as a renter in 1920 census and as an owner in 1930 census. That property was in the family until 1972 when is was sold after my husband's mother's death. Thanks for any help. 3. Thanks Ruth, We have good luck with calling cemeteries before so will try this one. I don't know why we didn't think of that this time. Must be old age or too long a time at the computer.
