    2. In response, I have connected with people who believe Henry Matteson was a nephew of the immigrant James Mathewson. As I recall, James' name appears variously in Providence records as Matteson, Matheson and Mathewson. Apparently people wrote the name as it sounded to them. It would appear that, while James chose the Mathewson spelling, Henry chose the Matteson spelling. A reader of the Mathewson Gazette in the 1980s, however, did not accept the belief that Henry was a nephew of James.
