Joyce: Yes, John Mathewson, "the cave-dweller" of Scituate, married Deliverance. They met while he was on a trip to Boston: "On his way, he passed a boiling spring, near a cottage; and being very dry, he applied at the house for water. A young woman came out with a pitcher and, in John's words, 'like Rebecca of old,' gave him to drink. Returning home, he just happened to be again dry at the same place. He called and was supplied. John says the acquaintance was thus providentially commenced. It ripened into marriage some year or two afterwards, in 1698." Those words, from my one-woman play, initially came from the funeral sermon of United States Senator Elisha Mathewson, great-grandson of John Mathewson.
