    1. [RIPROVID] Inquiry about Overseers
    2. Jeffrey Chace
    3. Dear Linda, I hope that you may be able to help me - in two ways. First, my GGG Grandfather Thomas Chace was a Quaker and lived in Providence circa 1805 - 1865 then he moved on to Shawnee, Kansas. His family (father, grandfather, etc.) lived in Providence from about 1700 until he left (other members of his family, of course, remained). I have a copy of a Providence directory from 1836/37 when Thomas Chace was in his mid-thirties, and in the directory he is listed as "overseer." Now, overseer could of course mean many things, but being a Quaker, I think he may have been elected "overseer of the poor." He was by trade a milkman with his own customers and I doubt whether he was "overseer" of the other milkmen. Is it possible that the Quakers had elected him "overseer of the poor" and that he had ties to Dexter? This I do not know. His father's name was Burgess T. Chace, a teamster and also a Quaker. Do you know of any involvement these two ancestors of mine may have had with Dexter and particularly as "overseer"? Second, if not, your help in determining that they were indeed not involved can lead me further on my way to finding out what kind of overseer Thomas Chace may have been by telling me that he was in no way connected to the Providence Poorhouse. Yours, Jeffrey Chace
