    3. Hello All, Some time back I ran across a website dedicated to tool makers of Providence. On this site there is also a link to a Providence, Rhode Island, Directory of 1836/37. It contains names, addresses and occupations of the inhabitants of Providence of these years. Included are my Great Great Great Great Grandfather Burgess Thomas Chace, teamster, and his son (my ggg grandfather) Thomas Bron Chace, overseer. Since finding information about the Poorhouses on this mailing list, I have revisited the site and found further information about two Cornells which may be the Cornells associated with the Portsmouth Poorhouse as Keeper of the Asylum and Appraiser of Inventory, George Cornell http://rewhc.org/townfarmcommittals.shtml and Stephen B. Cornell http://rewhc.org//townfarminvent01.shtml - respectively. They are listed as follows: Cornell George, house-carpenter, Hospital Cornell Stephen, overseer calender, Sabin, Federal [anyone know what an "overseer calender" is?] The inventory done by Stephen B. Cornell and Richard Sherman Jr. was in 1833 which would put the Stephen in the Directory near the right place and at the right time to be the appraiser. However, the letters from Seth Anthony to George Cornell were in 1867 being at a substantially later time, so this George Cornell, house-carpenter, Hospital, may have no connection whatsoever. By the way, you may find your relatives at the link. Take a look. http://www.netris.org/RIToolmakers/1836-37ProvDir/1836-37ProvDirMain.html Cheers, Jeffrey Chace > Dear Linda, > > Thanks a lot for the information. Contrary to popular belief, Unix is user friendly. It just happens to be very selective about who it decides to make friends with.
