Kathy No, you can't access indexes of Vital Statistics in Providence from 1636 to the 1950's on line. But there are ways around it. Someone created an index of Rhode Island's Vital Statistics. The Index can be found on Ancestry and is also available on a CD. But it's not complete. It must have been created from the Town files not the State files because it isn't complete. Information on the Blackstone Valley Towns and East Providence are either skimpy or just not there. The Index covers the early 1850's to the early 1930's. The State Archives has Vital Indices from the early 1850's but that's hard copy. Try this site for deaths, it's a good source. _http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/cemetery/) Paul McEnanly

Yes there is something that you can about it. You can get the death record corrected. When my father died in 1959 his death record held several mistakes including the misspelling of his last name. We notified the Vital Records department in Detroit and they indeed did correct the death record and reissued a new death cert. My brother-in-law has an incorrect Army pension file as there were two of the same name both from the same area in Illinois and it was never straightened out. My mom was born in Mendon MA and the sisters in Georgiaville RI so that created another kind of record difficulty. My grandfather has two different birth certificates with two sets of (different) parents..... In the microfilm archives there are certificates/ indexes of "No Name" child with surname on the microfilmed archive and we just happen to know who it was that was born that day as there are still living relatives. So no matter how much we strive for "facts" even the facts get muddled in the records. Of course there are some who would disagree with me and say that the "primary " source is always correct but the primary source often came from an oral report of a relative or (next of kin) in the earlier records. Sorry if this offends anyone... jes
Thanks for posting that, I've been using that office for over 7 years to collect all "certified documentation" with the state seal on them for my FTM Scrapbook function, the cost typically on a certified document (birth, marriages, deaths, etc.) is about $2.00, as opposed to going through the Providence City Hall offfice or others within the state at $15.00 per pop. Hi, I have found the RI State Archives to be very helpful and inexpensive. They will search their records (see bottom of this for dates of record they have), for you for the cost of the photocopies! Here's the info from the form I received from them.: RI State Archives 337 Westminster St. Providence, RI, 02903 401-222-2353 1) All requests must be made on a vital records order form (can be photocopied once you get one). 2) Only one type of record for one name may be requested on a form. 3) No more than 2 VR order forms may be submitted at one time. Please wait for a response before sending further requests. 4) All requests must include an approximate date for the record sought. 5) Requests for VRs occurring prior to 1853 must include the name of the city or town as no state-wide index exist. 6) Photocopies will be provided at a cost of $.15 per page. Certified copies can be provided at a cost of $2/record. Requests for certification of pre-1853 vitals must be directed to the city or town that holds the original record. Do not send money, you will be notified of any charges. NOTE: RI laws stipulate that all records of birth and marriage are closed for 100 years. Death records are restricted for a period of 50 years. Vital Records available at the RI State Archives are as follows: Town vitals: Prior to 1853 microfilm copies only Births & marriages 1853-1904 (state-wide index available) Deaths: 1853-1954 (statewide index available) -------------- I find that there is about a 3 week turn around for the requests I send. I send 2 requests in each envelope along with payment for the copies received from the last 2 requests - which has been anywhere from .30 to $1.05. They even called me once to ask a question about one request. I hope this is helpful. -Mary Ellen Moulton Plaistow, NH
I received a copy of what should have been my mother's death certificate and WOW was it ever wrong. Who ever gave the info at her death ( I believe it was my great Aunt Ernestine) gave my Aunt Rose's name and birthdate instead. Was I ever shocked. By law, the State Archives can not divulge Marriage or Death Certificate information for fifty (50) years and Birth Certificates for one hundred (100) years after the event. The RI Dept of Health does issue certificates to persons demonstrating a legal need. Unfortunately, I don't know what a "legal need" is. I have gotten death certificates for my own immediate family for probate concerns. The Providence Public Library has indexes of Births, Deaths and Marriages that took place in the City of Providence from 1636 up to the 1950's. _http://www.provlib.org/elibrary/athome/athome.htm_ (http://www.provlib.org/elibrary/athome/athome.htm) The person looking for a birth in Marieville, might find it in that index. There were no hospitals in North Providence until the 1950's and unless the person was born at home, the birth would have been at the Providence Lying In Hospital and the names of the parents should be in the index. If it was a Roman Catholic Birth, a Baptismal certificate might be found in the Marieville Church, The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (A French Canadian Parish mostly) _http://www.dioceseofprovidence.org/_ (http://www.dioceseofprovidence.org/) I hope this sheds some light on the subject.
