Anja, What years did they live on Eighth St.?? As a child, I also lived on that street from 1949 to 1952. It may have been the house next door as I remember the address was a low number like 21. I can always ask my Aunt if she remembers that family. Maybe that will be helpful to you as well. Also, I can take a picture of the house if you like since I only live 30 minutes from there now. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a photograph of the Poor Farm and some historical notes excerpted from The History of Pawtucket 1635 - 1876 by Susan Marie Boucher, published by The Pawtucket Memorial Library in 1976. The information was submitted by the eBay seller of a copy of that book. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on RHODE ISLAND on the table of states. You will find the photo at the top of the page (with a yellow NEW arrow). (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

Hello listers, Many of you may remember a few listers had a genealogy researchers reunion in Rhode Island sometime in the last year or two. They would like to start planing another reunion for sometime next year. I have created an online site where anybody who may be interested can go to sign up and post or read messages from each other. It is a small site but should serve the purpose well. Rhode Island List Reunion Please check it out and while there I would appreciate if you would post any ideas or comments you may have about the site, please do not post them to the mail lists or to me. I expect that the message list will grow and as it does I will archive them so the list does not get too large. I have also applied to Rootsweb for a separate mail list and a forum board that may used for "off topic" items of interest for our Rhode Island researchers, I will let you know if and when they are approved. Good hunting to all, *********** Arlan Maguire... Earl, There were way too many PARISEAULT/PARISEAUT's, etc in 1900 census and without the father's name .... Looks like your info came from the Social Security Death Index, though my search below on Family Tree Maker's site turned up a bit more. I suggest you send for their applications, Form SS-5, you usually get their birth date and place, parents, residence and employer at the time of application, a signature and sometimes a spouse, if any, and the mother's maiden name. Unfortunately, they raised the fee from $7 to $17 a couple months ago, probably because of all the requests from online researchers! Make sure you use the SS#, it costs less. You don't have to do a separate letter for each but don't put in too many at once! http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/fto_ssdisearch.html?Welcome=1002747996 It would probably still be worth it for a direct ancestor, though! Your oldest George would have had to apply in the 1930s so you would probably find out what he was doing during the depression. One ancestor's (a Rhode Islander!) application was stamped with an objection that the entire statute was unconstitutional! With the info from this primary source, it can lead to Census info, too. I got tons of info this way and, at a minimum, confirmed oral history with an official document for a couple generations! While only getting your direct ancestors can be a cost savings, I do want to mention that older siblings sometimes had full names of parents while younger siblings frequently only had nicknames. The full name is very helpful! Details on birthplace varied dramatically, too, and can show migration. But the cost for all that now .... Happy Hunting!
