Paul, Do you have any information about privateers that might have been in the Providence area in early 1780? I am trying to pinpoint the location of the frigate Deane. My ancestor, Cyril Brown, b. Cumberland RI 1756 served on the Deane under Captain Elisha Hinman for 5 months beginning December 1779. His son Cyril Brown was b. Attleboro MA 30 Dec 1870. An ad for "Jolly Fellows who love their country" to serve on "the grand Privateer Ship Deane commanded by Elisha Hinman" gave it's location as Governor Hancock's Wharf (Boston). Other than the ad, and the Rev. War Pension records for Cyril giving his dates of service on the Deane, I have not been able to locate any information on the whereabouts of the Deane between the times of a 5-week stint beginning in July 1779 and then a voyage listed as being in the winter and early spring of 1781. I do not know the date the actual ad was published. If Cyril Sr. was truly the father of Cyril Jr, he must have returned to the Providence RI - Attleboro MA area some time in the spring of 1780. Thanks
Providence is at the north end of Narragansett Bay. Newport is at the south end. The British captured and held Newport, Rhode Island from December 1776 until October 1779. Newport was a major fleet base for the blockade of the New England coast. Only the rare privateer or blockade runner ever made it in or out of Narragansett Bay during the time period. Paul McEnanly
Has anyone on this list had experience using the New England Naturalization Index, available on microfilm (ex. #1429714) at the LDS FHL? Is it the main source index for naturalizations in the New England area (esp. for residents of RI)? If so, how reliable and how complete is it? Are there courts in the area that are not covered in this Index? If so, are there indexes available for the other courts not covered? Howard
Does anyone on this list have a working knowledge of the availability of passenger lists for immigrants entering the Port of Providence - for the year 1778? I have checked NARA and the Family Search website of the LDS FHL, but have been unable to find even the images, let alone indexes, for that year. Was the port closed to the public during this period because of the revolution? Was there normal traffic, but the lists were lost or damaged? If the first reason is correct, where did most of the immigrants residing in Providence during the 1880 Census enter the country? Howard
I am looking for information on William Davis, purportedly the High Sheriff of Providence Plantation, who died "while eating breakfast" in 1755. I have searched numerous resources and can't seem to find any that list the various men who have been a sheriff for Providence Plantation. Can anyone make any suggestions? Background information that might be of some use in identifying William: William Davis had been elected to "various offices" prior to being sheriff. He was an immigrant from England, along with his brother John Davis, who was a minister for the Church of England in America. William Davis had two young motherless sons when he died named Gaius and Barnabas. (Note: William's brother John returned to England when his brother William died rather than taking on the raising of his two young nephews) Gaius was reared in North Providence, RI, in the family of Jonathan Pike and his wife Sarah Young; Gaius eventually married their daughter Hannah Pike. They lived in this area until the mid- to late-1790's when they moved to CT. Barnabas was raised by Rev. Eliphalet Wright and his wife Hannah Marsh in Mansfield and Danielson, both in Killingly, Windham Co. CT. Barnabas eventually married their daughter Hannah Wright. Any help would be appreciated. Dave, I see Ambroise & Henriette's son, Ambroise, on later census records. Some say he was born in MA and others say Canada (he was in Fall River, MA and Centrall Falls, RI). I checked again, but can't find this family in the US on the 1870 census. They must have gone back to Canada. I found the marriage of Ambroise Sr to his second wife in Shefford Co just like you said it would be. I didn't keep your original message so I don't remember what other info you had. Please send me the info again to woodsrule@ids.net . If you have another email address I can reply to that would be great. AOL won't accept mail from my isp. Your email was returned so I'm posting my reply here Dave, his second marriage says "Vf Henriette Blais". I believe that means "widower of". Divorce was very uncommon for the French. What are you looking for? Henriette's date of death? Her parents? I tried a few different spellings, but I can't find Ambroise on the 1870 US census. Maybe they returned to Canada after their marriage. Lots of families went back and forth several times. Patty
Listers, I`ve been lurking at this list for about a week. It seems to be pretty active. My great grandfather Ambroise CHOQUETTE b.1840ish in Waterloo,PQ,Canada, married Henriette BLAIS -19 Aug.,1866 in Woonsocket, RI. I don't have any report of divorce or widowing , however on Feb.18th, 1878 he married Mary Jarret dit Beauregard ,in Ste. Anne de Stukely, La Rochelle,PQ, Canada and they produced nine children . Could SKS do a lookup on Henriette Blais from the marriage date and any public records (probate) on this Woonsocket marriage ? Thank You , Dave
Hi folks, A mystery has come up and I need your help. I have been researching my husband's maternal side for 4 years now. The Tkaczuk's settled in CT. I just found a new "cousin" and she sent me her uncle's old address book where it shows another Tkaczuk living at 13 Goodings in Pawtucket. We have no idea how they fit into the family. I am hoping if I list their names someone may be able to link up to them. I found Laura Tkaczuk in the city directories living at 13 Gooding St. 1930 Census: 13 Gooding st. Stanley Tkaczuk Pawtucket, Providence, RI abt 1894 Poland White Head Stella Tkaczuk Pawtucket, Providence, RI abt 1895 Wife Laura Tkaczuk Pawtucket, Providence, RI abt 1916 Daughter Stella Tkaczuk Pawtucket, Providence, RI abt 1919 Daughter Stacia Tkaczuk Pawtucket, Providence, RI abt 1920 Daughter ----------------------------------------------------------- Name: Leokadia Tkaczuk - this is probably Laura SSN: 038-10-7051 Last Residence: 02860 Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island, United States of America Born: 22 Feb 1916 Died: Dec 1984 State (Year) SSN issued: Rhode Island (Before 1951 ) I would love to hear from anyone who might have information on this family. Kind regards Darlene BC Canada
I am sorry to cause such confusion, Ancestry.COM sponsors the "U.S. Immigration collection", which is a subscription site. I believe when I refer to the "LDS", Ancestry.com is just one of its affiliates, I was not clear using the term "LDS" when I should have said "Ancestry.com". But I wasn't sure whether it was on "Ancestry", "MyFamily" or a similar program. I personally have "Ancestry.com", with the U.K. census, It is a very valuable resource, but a bit expensive. Ellis Island.org. is free and is very helpful in locating ships manifests, and you don't need to pay. I know FamilySearch is free, I use it all the time. The site is also very helpful, but Ancestry.com has quick access to so many records, without it, I would still have many brick walls. Ruth
The Rhode Passenger Lists for the Port of Providence 1798 - 1808 & 1820 - 1872 and the Port of Bristol and Warren 1820-1871 are published in hard copy form. Most of the traffic was with the Caribbean and Nova Scotia. Paul McEnanly

I've been looking for access to a Port of Providence passenger list index, or at least the lists themselves, covering the year 1878. Does anyone know if either exist? I do live close to an LDS FHC (in Pennsylvania), but have had no luck in finding these resources there via the FHL. > Passenger lists for Providence (and Bristol & Warren) have not been indexed for 1878. The indexed years vary by port, but none of the Atlantic ports (other than NY) have been indexed for 1878. You need to look thru the FHL for "Atlantic ports" or "Bureau of Customs" to find the film numbers. And it would be easier to find his naturalization papers first, and get a more exact date and place of arrival before trying for a ships list. > > >

There is simply a link to view some copies of film census forms that takes the LDS site viewer over to Ancestry so the viewer does have the option of subscribing to Ancestry. LDS, however, does have some FREE census information as well, which helps the viewer eliminate multiple names. Regards, Diane Wolford

If anyone is attempting to charge you for use of their site, their library, etc., you are involved in a scam. From the very beginning _www.familysearch.com_ (http://www.familysearch.com) has not charged for the information. The webmasters have put a link to some census forms that will take the viewer to Ancestry.com for film copies of the census, but Ancestry is not part of the LDS site. It is simply something nice that the webmasters provide. Entrance to the LDS site and LDS library is free; they do charge for copying costs at the library, which is certainly understandable. Sorry, I meant the LDS Ellis Island site, only. It has the same information as the Ellis Island sponsored site. This is the site I use www.ellisisland.org I think the other is sponsored by Ancestry.com Ruth

Their surname is listed as Menceel. He is 36 with birth date Mch 1864 - and on that census he is listed as Augustus. Based on similarity of name, age, location, and family members' names and ages, it would appear to be the same family. Wife Elizabeth 35 has a birth date of Feb. 1865. Immigration year for him is given as 1862, and for her it is 1880. He is listed as Naturalized - so I assume there is information about him in Naturalization papers. His occupation in 1900 is oysterman. Gustave age 13 is listed as b. RI Oct 1886, and Emma age 8 was b. NJ April 1892. I note that the 1910 census also gives the son's birthplace as RI. Florence
Try this web site. It is a list of other sites. I've hade good luck at Olive Tree. Hi, Just to let you know, there are names listed on the Ellis Island Website. It is free, don't mistake it for the LDS site, which is not free. I have been in the same place as you. I believe my grandparents came to Rhode Island from England through Boston or Providence. There does not seem to be any records, except for the Ellis Island site. I have posted the same query several times and am redirected back to Ellis Island. If you do find a list for Boston and Providence, I would love to know. My relatives came over in the early 1900's, most likely sailing from Liverpool. Best Wishes, Ruth
