I have scanned the complete 1858 directory for Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. I have also moved the transcribed 1856 directory (the first printed) to the same location. Unlike telephone books, this directory lists all the adults at a location and their occupation, and the work location. Widows are listed with the name of the deceased husband. NOTE: the book is complete, but there are no pages numbered 1 to 24 except in the advertisements section, which has duplicate numbers. Street listings begin on page 25. The general directory of citizens begins on page 29. The business directory, which is alphabetical by type of business, begins on page 104. There is a table of contents and a list of advertisers. The images are enlargements (150%) of the original. If it fills your screen without a scroll bar you need to click on it and enlarge.
