    1. [RINEWPOR] Thurston
    2. Harry Merrihew
    3. Hi, I just joined this list. If there is a more appropriate list for my query, could someone please tell me. Sarah Thurston married Jonathan Davenport on May 16, 1780, in Little Compton. Sarah's parents are listed as Thomas and Mary Thurston. I have been trying to trace the lines of Thomas and Mary but have had no success. It is likely that Thomas is descended from Edward Thurston and Elizabeth Mott ( the first of the Thurstons in Newport County), but I have not been able to make a connection. The only Mary that I have been able to identify that married a Thomas Thurston in the correct time-frame is a Mary (Mercy) Sunderlin (or Sunderland) who married on October 18, 1743, but have no way of knowing if this is the correct Mary. Any available information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Harry Merrihew mactavishll@mediaone.net

    3. Hello all. I just wanted to let you know that Ancestry.com has the 1887-92 Newport City Directories in their database now. They are searchable free for the first ten days, but then they will probably become part of their subscription service. This is a great resource for all of us searching in that timeframe especially due to the loss of the 1890 census. http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/5053.htm Good luck to all. 3. I don't live in Little Compton any more but maybe this information will help some. You may have this book already "Little Compton Families" by Benjamin Franklin Wilbur Great book lists, genealogy of original families of Little Compton. I found the book in the Denver (CO) Public Library. The New Bedford (MA) Free Public Library has a great genealogy section with a lot of information on families who lived in Little Compton. The hours of operation are limited though. There is a book by David Patten that tells a lot of stories about the old families of Little Compton. I cannot remember the name of the book though. In Little Compton there is a store on the Commons named Wilburs store if you get there again they may have the book in stock they were out when I was there. David Patten wrote for the Providence Journal, he grew up in Little Compton. The some of the early town records (before the town became part of RI) can be found in Taunton MA. Hope this helps some. 1. [RINEWPOR] Elizabeth (??) Babcock Dye 1713-1783
    2. Hi, folks. Looking into the origin of the "Mercy DYER" who married John Casey (1723-1794). As I am in NC and don't have access to original sources, I found an excerpt of a Richmond, RI will of Elizabeth DYE. It seems possible with the matching daughter given and married name and grandaughters given names, that "Mercy Dyer" was acutually Mercy DYE, daughter of Elizabeth DYE. Excerpt of Elizabeth's will below. The follow-up question will be, "what was Elizabeth's maiden name and/or parentage?" Since she had BABCOCK children whilke her name at time of death was DYE, It would seem that her earlier husband was BABCOCK and latter husband was Richard DYE (1709-1760). Richmond, RI wills: DYE, Elizabeth, of RI. Will dated 2 Sep 1764, proved 15 Sep 1783 pgs 346-348. Mentions: Sons: Elisha BABCOCK and Jonathan BABCOCK. Daughters: Mercy CASEY and Elizabeth BABCOCK. Grandson Benjamin BABCOCK son of Elisha. Granddaughter Mercy BABCOCK. 3 Granddaughters: Mercy CASEY, Sarah CASEY & Mary CASEY. Cozen (sic) Elizabeth Phillips. 1. [RINEWPOR] Memories
    2. Hi all, Two years I began using a computer for the first time and only used word processing. My project was to write my autobiography for my children and grand children. I was born in 1926 in Newport RI and lived here until age 22. I have completed data, told in narrative form, from first memory at 1930 through 1948, and a sort of outline, still in narrative, from 48 to 68. As memories occur, I type them intheir proper place. People who lived during the 30s depression era and WW2 should ALL write their stories for their families. Don't we wish our ancestors had done this? Like too many of you, my family rarely talked about previous generations. Don't put it off. We never know how long we have and future generations will be glad of a glimpse into your childhood and later years. Barb Austin

    1. [RINEWPOR] FRANCIS family - Newport 1800 - 1900s
    2. Hi Newport Listers, I am looking for information regarding the Francis family of Newport, RI. Marion Aubrey Francis (b. 9/12/1869 in Newport) married Rev. William Osgood PEARSON at Trinity Church (Episcopalian) in Newport in September 1987. She was his third wife, and a life-long friend of Rev. Pearson's second wife, Helen RHETT Pearson of Boston, MA, Newport, RI, and Baltimore, MD. Marion Pearson lost her husband after only three years of marriage, and although the couple had no children together, Marion raised Williams' six children from his first two marriages. He married first, Agnes May ALDEN of Delafield, Wisconsin and had three sons; then he married Helen of Boston and had two daughters and a son; that youngest son was my grandfather, George Rhett PEARSON. I was given a letter dictated by Rev. David Adams PEARSON (youngest son of William and first wife Agnes) in which he told how Helen Rhett Pearson made her dearest friend, Marion FRANCIS, and her husband promise to marry once she (Helen) met with her impending death. It was a touching story, and I am very curious to discover what I can about Marion's life - thereby learning about my own great-grandmother (Helen) who shared many of Marion's experiences. I believe that Marion was a kindergarten teacher. Not only did Marion keep her word to her friend, but after the untimely death of her husband, Marion and two of her unmarried sisters, Louisa and Medora Francis, helped Marion and Helen's mother, Eliza (Eckley) RHETT, raise all six children. I am grateful to this kind and caring woman and her sisters who gave so much of themselves to raising six youngsters who belonged to other women. And while I understand how Marion might have felt somewhat "obligated" to her friend Helen, I think it speaks very highly of Marion's character that she and her sisters kept the family together by including the three boys born to Agnes Alden Pearson. I remember my mother telling me that Marion Francis Pearson (who d. May 27, 1917, is buried with her husband and Helen Rhett Pearson in Cedar Cemetery in Jamestown, RI) was related to Julia Ward Howe, the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." The descendants of my great-uncle David Pearson (mentioned above) has a letter written in her hand regarding his 1906 graduation from Harvard College. Marion was also related to General Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox" of South Carolina Revolutionary War fame. I have not yet discovered the exact connection, but would very much like to make the connection. If anyone knows of the Francis family or have any ideas where I might be able to glean the info I seek, please contact me at pilgrimpjm@aol.com. I want so much to know more about this family to whom we are so grateful. Thanks for you help! Pamela Rhett Molzan Charleston, SC pilgrimpjm@aol.com

    3. Hello Marge. While I don't have the answer to the question you asked, I do have some information on a Fall River, MA Gifford. I currently have in my possession both volumes of Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, pub. 1983. In Volume I on page 135 there is a Mary Gifford listed as follows under "Jefferson Borden of Fall River, Mass.: Mary Gifford (3) [Christopher (2), William (1)] b. Oct. 6 1695, no death date married Thomas Borden (4) [Richard (3), John (2), Richard (1)] b. Dec. 8 1697, m. Aug. 14 1721, d. 1740 Tiverton, RI. Hope this is some connection to your Giffords.
