Looking for a Peter or Alexander WILSON who lived in Newport from about 1900-1910. Peter and Alexander were brothers: Peter born 1874; Alexander born 1876 in Scotland. They were the sons of Thomas and Agnes Wilson. By 1905 Agnes was widowed; Agnes passed away about 1910 in St. Louis (where she was visiting her brother Alexander STEWART for a few weeks).

Hi list- was just on this site: www.ancientfaces.com It has almost 1,000 old photos and over 1200 individuals.....thought maybe someone on the list would be interested, and possibly find a connection with one of the surnames! I have sent this to several other lists that I am on, so I apologize if it's a 'repeat message' for you! Pam

Hello All New to the list and have decided to drop this information on you to see if anyone can be of help with the information that I have. My second great grandfather was: George Washington TOMPKINS b.Sept. 16, 1823 RI; d. Nov. 5, 1887 in Humboldt county, CA. He was of Irish descent, a Lawyer, District Attorney and then a Judge in Eureka. He and his wife are buried in Hydesville, CA. I know better than to accept what I find in the IGI; that everything must have proof; but do feel that it can be a start. Well, I looked and found that his Father's name was Lindall (Lindell) TOMPKINS b.1784 in Newport, RI. Mother was Rebecca PINKHAM. The name Lyndle and Lindel have been given to several members in the family, in fact it is my husbands middle name. When I look at the information on IGI, it is shown as an extraction from the 1636-1850 RI vital records. There are many folks listed back to Nathaniel TOMPKINS b. 1650. Anyone on the list familiar with this family? After searching for my TOMPKINS ancestor for several years; I found him quite by accident while on a trip to Eureka. I was looking for my HARRIS family and there he was. Quite exciting! His daughter, Isobelle TOMPKINS was born in 1866, in San Francisco; so we assumed that was where the family stayed. In fact they moved to Eureka in 1870. I don't want to head down the wrong track, so hope one of you might know a bit about this family. Many thanks and happy hunting to all! Kathy Harris

Hello. I'm a former Newporter still researching ancestors in Newport. I've had great luck getting obituaries from the Newport Daily News. If she died in/around Newport then just write them requesting a copy of the obituary from the Newport Daily News. Be sure to give them her full name and approx. death date. I usually enclose a SASE and a small donation. They are a little slow in replying but I've always gotten a response. The Newport Daily News itself only archives back issues for a year. Good luck with your research. Little Compton has a fairly good genealogy section in their library, I understand. Haven't been there but talked with a gal who volunteers there. Barb Austin
There is a book " Little Compton Families" by Benjamin Franklin Wilbour that may be of some help to you. It lists the genealogy of the original settlers of Little Compton. I have seen it for sale on the Internet but can't remember where, Evertons maybe. I found it in the Denver CO Public Library. You might try a library near you. Wilbour wrote a couple of books about Little Compton. If you live in the area of Little Compton you might check the county seat for Bristol County MA. I think it's Taunton. At one time Little Compton and Tiverton were part of Massachusetts. The New Bedford Free Public Library has quite a bit of genealogy information on Little Compton and the surrounding area. People moved often in those times so you might also check Massachusetts towns and cities like Westport, Fall River, Freetown, New Bedford, and Dartmouth. Also all Newport County RI towns.
