Howard, born abt. 1767 in Rhode Island . I do have information on John E. Howard and Lydia after they married and went to New York and ended up in Kalamazoo, MI, Portage Twp. Thanking you in advance. 1. [RINEWPOR] BURGESS / TAYLOR connection
    2. Last year I wrote to several lists pointing out the apparent challenge/confusion in proving the ancestry of Hannah Taylor who married Thomas Burgess (1714-1792) in Little Compton, RI in Jan 1737/38. I don't feel like the question was ever resolved. The main sources that I have used to look into this situation include: 1. (LCF) "Little Compton Families" by Ben Franklin Wilbour ... including the appendix of corrections found at the rear of volume 2, page 834. 2. "Arnold's VR of RI" 3. The several BURGESS genealogies available including the original of 1865 by Ebenezer Burgess and Paul F. Burgess' work published in 1993. Most of these would have her parentage being father: Peter Taylor (1661-1736) son of Robert Taylor mother: Hannah Wood (1684/85 - ???) daughter of Thomas & Rebecca Wood However: quoting from LCF page 834: "There is considerable confusion as to the Taylor Family, particularly in reference to Peter2 and Peter3 who were father & son. They each probably had two wives. Peter2's children are authentically defined by his will, but some of them do not match the birth records of Little Compton, including the putative children of Elizabeth Irish Taylor, probably Hannah (12 April 1721), William (30 April 1724) and Anna (13 Feb 1726). However, Peter2 apparently had children with the names Hannah, William and Anna also." Here is my concern. Peter3 Taylor was the 1st child of Peter2 Taylor's 1st wife ... he was born early ... in 1697. Elizabeth Irish was the 1st wife of Peter3 and these three identically named children would be born between 1721 and 1733 (their marriage & her death). Now the fun part. Peter2 Taylor was father to his set of 3 identically named children through his second wife, Hannah Wood, sometime after daughter Rebecca (born 1719) and before Peter2 Taylor died in 1736. Hence, the time period for births of his Hannah, William & Anna is between 1720 and 1736. Question: does anyone have access to the will of Peter2 Talor which might shed some light? However, I would doubt this because the marriage of Hannah Taylor and Thomas Burgess took place after this will would have been written & probably proved. Question: does anyone know of any source which settles this dispute? Was our Hannah Taylor's mother Hannah Wood or Elizabeth Irish?? Was she the daughter of Peter2 ( & 2d wife) or Peter3 ( & 1st wife)?? Yours in truth, Al Rose http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=butchrose

    1. Re: [RINEWPOR] Posting to Newport, Rhode Island List
    2. Hello Listers My name is Walt Ayars...I have been following your exchanges of information with interest since I have a vital interest in the Baptist families of Newport area in the late 1600s. My first American ancestor was ROBERT AYARS (note spelling- he insisted on using this spelling on all his documents.) Robert is believed to have been born abt 1650 and came to RI about 1664 (tradition-not documented). He and his family are documented in the Newport area in the late 1600s and first few years of 1700s. His first wife was Katharin ____ (1643-1685, buried at Common Cem at Newport). His second wife was Esther (Hester) Bowen (?). Children by first wife: Isaac, Stgephen, Judah, John, Robert, Esther. By second wife: Ann, Caleb, Joshua. Now, the key to the Ayars and others I have seen you mention is that they were Seventh Day Baptist. The first SDB Church was at Newport- Esther Bowen Ayars and some of the children were members of this first SDB Church at Newport. Joseph Crandall (who married Deborah Burdick and Elizabeth Lewis and Hannah) was the third pastor of the SDB Church. A very close associate of my ROBERT AYARS was Stephen Mumford- Mumford was one of the founding members of the SDB. I would be happy to exchange data on this group of RI residents. I prefer to use snailmail so please give me your snailmail address when requesting printouts of RI persons. Walt Ayars, [ waltayars@aol.com ], Box 279, Summerdale, PA 17093
