Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/RI/Newport/10049 Surname: PHILLIPS ------------------------- Jean, I'm sorry but I do not know who her parents were. I looked through all the information that I have and don't have anything written down. All I know is that Nathaniel Negus was married to Alice Phillips. She was born @ 1728 in Newport, RI and died in June 1751 in Newport, RI in childbirth with Phebe who was born June 1751 in Newport and died in March 26, 1825. He then married on Sept 1, 1751 Elizabeth Gallup who was born in Portsmouth , RI and died Nov 24, 1819 in Trox, MA. They had one son Isaac (whom I descend from ) and 2 or 3 other children. Good luck, I hope you find the parents of Alice. If I run across something, I will keep your address on file and let you know. Doug

Thank you, Barb Walt Ayars
Hi, Fort Butts is located on the south side of Sprague St. between Rt 138 and 114 in the Northern part of Portsmouth. There have been attempts to restore the area but the kids always destroy what is left. It has been my impression for many years that the land where the Breakers was built belonged to John Coggeshall in early days. Barb Austin
I am looking at a reproduction of an older Portsmouth map and it shows Butts Hill to be located on the East Main Road some distance north from Quaker Hill. If you have any old maps, looking "down" on one, it will be almost opposite Gould Island in the Sakonnet River to the east and a little further north than Lehigh Hill on the West Main Road. There are many very old houses in Portsmouth still standing and most still occupied. Barb Austin
There is a historical home in Portsmouth still existing and I think was restored by the Historical Society about 25 years ago. As far as I know it still stands, perhaps you should contact them. The description of the fort matches a location I am very familiar with in a town called Warren. There is now a park there called Burrs Hill, there are twin hills (man made) for the war. Cannons were placed behind them for protection yet they could fire on the British. The space between the two hills is wide enough to drive a small dump truck. This could very well be what you are looking for, many times revolutionaries would retreat to safer ground from New Port and Portsmouth. This could indeed be the location you are searching for. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Raelinjo@aol.com> To: <RINEWPOR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 11, 2001 7:39 AM Subject: [RINEWPOR] Revolutionary times... > Hello fellow listers, > Can anyone tell me if there was/is a place called "Butts Hill" or "Fort > Butts" near Portsmouth on Newport's island? SORRY.....I hit the wrong button and my incomplete message went out..... I am trying to find the exact present day location of a farm known as Brace's Farm in Newport, RI. My first American ancestor, ROBERT AYARS, purchased this farm (along with his friend, Stephen Mumford) in 1687. It was located at Ochre Point and I believe may have included the land where the "Breakers" now sits. When Ayars and Mumford bought the farm it was 240 acres, late in occupation of Richard Allison....bounded on westby Henry Bull and Jirah Bull; on south by Major John Coggelshall; on east by the Sea; on north by John Easton Sr and by the Common. I would like to find a land draft or early map showing its borders, if possible. Thank you, Walter Ayars (Summerdale, PA)
Dear Listers I would appreciate any information you may be able to share on the actual location of a Newport farm.

Donald Lines Jacobus did a great deal of research on the Rich family. It is found in TAG (The American Genealogist) about 1945/6. Very good stuff. The articles are titled, "The House of Rich" (TAG 21:234-238; 22:27-37, 157-165, 240-248, and 23: 101-110) There is a small follow up article in TAG April 1984 page 91, but this does not address your problem. Kilbourn, Stanton, Viall, Vail, Gray I need info on KILBURN, John & STANTON, Catherine Isabella possibly married 10 July 1763. This is almost all pure guesswork based on long distance research.
