    3. Hi Al, I can only give you a name that needs to be proven. The name that I have is Elizabeth Wilkinson, but I have no documentation. For a source I have Nancy Mauro of Floridia. Her e-mail address is mauro@gte.net Perhaps she has a source. If she does, please let me know. In "A Tale of Old Newport" it only mentions the wife of each of the sons by given name. Best regards, Max

I've not seen a copy of the article you mention but heard (have seen) parts of it. I'd be interested in the answer to your query. BTW, I don't have the maiden name of William's wife, Elizabeth. Can you enlighten me? Thanks Al Rose

    3. Hi, I am a descendant of William Gardiner the son of George Gardiner and Herodias Long who was married previously to John Hicks and later married John Porter. It appears that my wife is a decendant of John Porter and Herodias. When we first started doing genealogy we did not record sources very well. We have a photo copy of an article entitled "HERODIAS (LONG) HICKS-GARDINER-PORTER, A TALE OF OLD NEWPORT" by G. Andrews Moriarty. The article was printed on pages 599-607. Does anyone know the name of the publication in which this article appeared? Also does anyone have information on the descendants of John Porter and Herodias? Best regards, Max

    1. [RINEWPOR] CROUCHER, Newport County, RI & Bristol Co, MA
    2. Seeking this info for a friend. His late mother was: Edith CROACHER, b. 1898, Padanarum, MA. Her parents were: Delancey CROACHER & Carrie Lee HART. He was b. 1860 in Little Compton, RI. Carrie's parents were John HART & Caroline BUTTS. Delancey CROACHER's parents were: Rodolphus CROACHER, b. ~ 1840, prob. in Newport County, RI (Newport, Portsmouth, Tiverton??) and Phebe CHACE. Rodolphus CROACHER/CROUCHER's father was: John E. CROUCHER (sp?), b. ~ 1815, prob. in Newport County, RI. I believe John E. CROUCHER's father was Daniel B. CROUCHER, b. ~ 1800. Daniel was married in Newport in 1830. I believe Daniel B. had a brother, Thomas CROUCHER. Thomas may have m. Sarah A. SHEPARD in Newport ~ 1830. I found an old article in the New Bedford newspaper about an Dr. Anna CROACHER, who was b. ~ 1879. In the article, it mentions the ancestors were from Newport, fought in the Revolution, and during the whaling era, her ancestors were merchants. Is someone able to check the vitals from Newport (or perhaps towns closeby) to see if you can find any vitals from these ancestors, or can tell us which CROACHERs first arrive in Newport. I have seen the name as: CROACHER, CROUCHER, CROOCHER, CROWCHER, etc. Thank you very much. Betty, MA (my friend is Dick CROACHER)

    1. [RINEWPOR] WALDRON, Eleazer m. Sarah ---, b. ~ 1796
    2. Seeking further info and especially parents of: Eleazer WALDRON, b. ~ 1796, near Bristol, RI or Bristol County, MA. He m. Sarah --- by 1816. They had a son, Henry WALDRON, who was b. in Tiverton, RI at 9/25/1816. Henry d. in 1872 in Fairhaven, Bristol, MA after a train accident. He m. Clarissa CARTER of Raynham, Bristol, MA, prob. near 1834, place unknown. In the Fall River, Bristol, MA census in 1870, there was a Eleazer WALDRON along with a younger Eleazer WALDRON. A few years later (1877), there was an Eleazer WALDRON who died in Fall River. I cannot be sure it is the same man. The man I found (when he died) shows parents Thomas WALDRON & Ruth GRAY, dau. of Col. Thomas GRAY. I printed out the DAR this Thomas WALDRON (many pagess). Now I want to come back and make sure I have that this Thomas WALDRON is, in fact, the ancestor of their supposed son, Eleazer WALDRON. Can anyone find the vitals for this Eleazer WALDRON (wife Sarah)? I have tried many places, but not sure I have this line correct. Thank you! Betty, MA

    3. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote enquiring about the most likely burial ground for someone with little money dying in Newport. Since that time, I have expanded my family branches by leaps and bounds and would like to know if anyone has any connections they would like to explore with me. William BARLAS and Janet BARLAS (McLean) arrived in Rhode Island in April 1880 with 3 daughters, Isabella, Mary and Jessie. William was killed in August 1880 in Providence while building the new cathedral there. Janet and the girls then moved to Newport where they lived for the rest of their lives. Isabella married Roderick F. O'CONNOR and had no children. Mary W. BARLAS married Dudley P BACHELLER and they had at least 2 children. Jeanette, who married a James MARTLAND and D.P. BACHELLER Jr. Jessie McDonald BARLAS married a Walter E. FISHER and they had one daughter- Harriet. All of the girls were prominent members of the First Presbyterian Church, the Eastern Star, Mineola Council, Degree of Pocahontas; and of the Daughters of the Thistle. This last information comes from their obituaries. One of my first questions has to be - Would anybody know what these organizations are all about? Just thought I would post these new findings and hope someone one out there shares a connection somewhere! Thanks, Karen

Thank you very kindly for the responses to my questions. Just as an aside, I didn't mean to indicate that you had to have money to be buried in Newport :-), but only that they probably didnt have money to ship the body back to Scotland. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Karen

Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/RI/Newport/10051 Surname: Slocombe, Bickham ------------------------- I've seen a lot of interest in Giles Slocum, son of Philip Slocombe and Charity Bickham of Old Cleeve. Not much seems to be known about Philip. I can add a bit, as i copied his will today... He wrote his will in 1624, and it was proved in 1625. He was living in Goathurst, Somerset. His legacies were to his wife (Charity), son Giles, and to his unborn child "if it live and survive".

    3. We are extremely happy to share with you a brief lesson (about poorhouse research in RI) & summary of the poorhouse records available in the state. This was researched and written by Bob Sherman for The POORHOUSE STORY website (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com We are very grateful to him for providing this information. You can find it toward the bottom of the RHODE ISLAND page where we have items regarding RECORDS. It is marked with a large yellow NEW arrow. 3. I would try the Common Cemetery on Farewell St.,Newport. -----Original Message----- From: Karen Kushnir [mailto:ocean4@home.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2001 7:27 AM To: RINEWPOR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [RINEWPOR] Burials Hi: I am new to this list, so if I have a question that you have heard many times before, please excuse it. I am researching a couple- William and Janet Barlas who immigrated to the US in approx 1879. They are found on the June 1880 census living in Providence R.I. On August 13, 1880 William dies in Newport R.I. On the listing from Ancestry, the next of kin are listed as a George and Emeline Barker, which would lead me to believe that his wife is not there and still living in Providence at that time. Subsequently, in 1888 his widow is found in the Newport city directory. My questions are 1. Taking into consideration that these people were almost certainly without money, do you think that William have been buried in Newport? 2. When his wife moved to Newport, she first lived on and one of her daughters worked on Thames Street while another daughter worked at the Commercial Wharf. Which cemeteries would he most likely have been buried in? 3. Would the original death certificate indicate the place of burial. My cousin/co-researcher is coming to the area in June and would love to be able to locate a place of burial. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
