1. [RINEWPOR] Catherine Hart
2. Gill Walmsley
3. Hi list, As I have only just joined (and am fairly new to family research) I was wondering if anyone out there can help me with an ancestor I'm trying to trace. I'm looking for Catherine Quinn who was born in Yorkshire, England in 1866. She married to become Catherine Hall and then when her husband died she moved to Rhode Island where she remarried to become Catherine Hart. I have her marriage record to Bengamin Davis Hart (a soldier) in 1900, and I also have her in the 1900 census in Newport, where she was working as a servant in West Broadway. After that I have lost her completely. I also believe she may have took her son with her to the US (Sidney Hall) but have no evidence for this yet. As I live in London I have no idea how to go about looking for her in Rhode Island records, what's available etc. Any advice would be gratefully accepted! 1. [RINEWPOR] List reunion
2. Hello listers, Many of you may remember a few listers had a genealogy researchers reunion in Rhode Island sometime in the last year or two. They would like to start planing another reunion for sometime next year. I have created an online site where anybody who may be interested can go to sign up and post or read messages from each other. It is a small site but should serve the purpose well. Rhode Island List Reunion Please check it out and while there I would appreciate if you would post any ideas or comments you may have about the site, please do not post them to the mail lists or to me. I expect that the message list will grow and as it does I will archive them so the list does not get too large. I have also applied to Rootsweb for a separate mail list and a forum board that may used for "off topic" items of interest for our Rhode Island researchers, I will let you know if and when they are approved. Good hunting to all, *********** Arlan Maguire... 2. Bingo! Thanks Susan, This is exactly the info needed. From another source I had suspected that Helen Prime was Frederick's mother. I'll check to see if "Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island" J. H. Beers, Chicago 1908. is available locally. If not I'll get back to you with more questions. George

1. Re: [RINEWPOR] Mayor of Newport 1901
2. Thanks Susan, Part of my reason for tracking down Frederick P. Garrettson is to determine which of his nephews named Freeborn Garrettson Freeborn (the preacher) is talking about in his journals. I now have two different versions of the preacher's journals. One published shortly after his death by a friend and colleague and another published in 1984 by Drew University. George

3. And from another Susan, the answer is Yes. There is a lengthy article on the Garrettson family beginning on page 700, Volume II, of "Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island" J. H. Beers, Chicago 1908. It includes the full family line, plus a full page picture of Frederick Prime Garrettson, eldest child of Francis T. and Helen Jay (Prime) Garrettson, born July 30, 1857 in Rhinebeck, NY. 2. Your mention of Freeborn GARRETTSON, caused me to "look him up" in the book I have, " The Colonial Clergy of the Middle Colonies".I found the following information if anyone is interested. FREEBORN GATTETTSON, b MD, 15, Aug. 1752, served in Frederick co., MD., 1776-1776; served in the NY Conference, 1776-1827; Meth.; d. NY, NY 26 Sept, 1827, at 66. Susan

1. [RINEWPOR] Mayor of Newport 1901
2. Does anyone have any clues about Frederick P. Garrettson who answered a Pennsylvania school girl's letter on 25Feb 1901 including the following: "My direct ancester who came north from Maryland was Thomas Garrettson, the brother of Freeborn, a celebrated Methodist Clergyman" Frederick P. Garrettson, Mayor of Newport, RI I believe he is the same Frederick P. Garrettson who founded the F.P.Garrettson Tea Company. My hope is that someone can help me make the connection back to Thomas. If there are any Garrettson descendants reading this I would be happy to make your acquaintance and fill you in on the line up to Thomas and most of the descendants in other branches. The Thomas line has been a problem. Thomas m. Rachel Roberts in 1789 in Maryland and later "went to New York." - New York is a big place and census takers were not much concerned about spelling. 1. [RINEWPOR] Inquiry about a Laughlin Dowling & Family of Providence & Newport, RI
2. Steve Wilder
3. Good Evening Everyone : I'm making an inquiry about an ancestor by the name of Laughlin Dowling. He entered this country at the port of Newport RI in 1826. He came to this country from Ireland. I'm not to sure weather his children eight in number were born in Newport or Providence. The first was born in 1834 and the last in 1849. This Laughlin Dowling received his citizenship in 1835 through the courts in Newport. This Laughlin Dowling also appears in the 1840 & 1850 Federal Census for Rhode Island. I understand his name also appears on a disk in the " Family Tree Maker " series of disk intitled " Passenger & Immigration List Index 1538-1940 " which is disk 354. I also have several land deed's as early as 1833 in Newport. Can anyone help me with this Laughlin Dowling and family. Sincerely Steve Wilder

3. I am researching the Albro family of Newport. Sarah Albro was born there in 1793. She married Alfred Jenks in Pawtucket on Nov. 2, 1820. It would be great if there were some Albro cousins out there! In addition, is there a site where I might learn more about Newport in the 1790's? Thanks! Martha Stead

3. There were also Town Farms. He might have been sent to one of them. I don't know about Newport, Middletown, or Portsmouth but Tiverton (all of these being in Newport Co.) had a Town Farm where children were sent. 3. In about 1914 or so George Henry FITT was sent to a "Home" or reformatory for boys for stealing chewing gum. He was treated very, very harshly there. Does anyone have any idea if he may have been sent to that sort of institution located in Newport ? I felt it was most probable that he was sent to Butler Hospital and the Boy's Reformatory there.....but, it could have been someplace right in or near Newport. Thanks for any help, Polly

3. Paulette, "A Tale of Old Newport" is an article written by Andrews Moriarty that was published in a genealogy publication. I made a photo copy of the article, but I did not record the publication in which the article was printed. The article is about my ancestor Herodias (Long( Hicks-Gardiner-Porter. I live in Arizona and we found the article in a local genealogy library--prababy at the State Capitol. The local Family History Centers that the LDS Church has allows you to view mircrofilms of a lot of genealogy material. If you do not know about them, let me know and I can find out where the one that is nearest you is located. Best regards, Max

3. Paulette, I have a 1940 Newport City Directory. What would you like looked up? That "Tales of Old Newport" is often for sale on Ebay. I am in Washington State, too. Near Puyallup. It is not easy to find East Coast books to research here....but, the Internet has been grand.
