    1. [RINEWPOR] GOULDs of Rhode Island c. 1700's
    2. George W. Page
    3. I'm still searching for parents ancestors of Anna GOULD, b. in May 1741 in RI. She m. abt. 1760 Deacon Charles DEAKE/DAKE, and they moved to Washington Co., NY. I found a will abstract for Daniel GOULD of Middleton, Newport Co., R.I. written June 21, 1756; probated Jan. 3, 1757. He mentions: Wife Mary (BROWN?) Gould; daughters Mary, Priscilla, Ann, Waite & Bathsheba Gould & Abigail GREEN, wife of Joseph; sons Daniel & Thomas. [Contributed by Mrs. Oliver W. Cushman, of Newport, R.I., "ABSTRACTS OF WILLS Probate Records of the Town of Middletown, R.I." NEH&G Register Vol. 122, April 1968, p. 101] Does anyone have further information about this Daniel & Mary GOULD, their ancestors, or their family? Is there a possibility that he is descended from (perhaps the son of ) Daniel GOULD who m. on 18 Dec. 1651, in Boston, MA, Wait "Wayte" COGGESHALL who was bapt. Sept. 11, 1634 in Boston and d. 1718 in Rhode Island? Daniel was the son of Jeremiah "Jeremy" GOULD. Mary was the daughter of John (<1601 - <1647) and Mary (HODGE) (1604-1684 ). Together they had 10 children. [http://linkline.com/personal/xymox/roh/coggesha.htm] George W. Page Bryans Road, MD

    1. [RINEWPOR] BRUSE/BRUCE BIBLES
    2. Hello to the lists: I have 3 Bibles which I believe are Swedish that I would like to place in the hands of a proven descendant(s). The first has on the spine "Biblisk Skattammare Af P. A. AHLBERG. This is an 1893 Bible by P. A. AHLBERG." Inside, there is a handwritten inscription: "Mr. Alexander BRUCE, (note spelling) Juehalsning fran forsamlingen, 1924." There are no family pages contained within. The second is a 2 Volume Bible, also in Swedish. On the spine is "Bibeln Med Forklaringar Af FJELLSTEDT." This is an 1878 Bible by P. FJELLSTEDT. There is a handwritten inscription inside Volume 1: "Carl Johna BRUSE, Pontiag, R. I., den 13 Oktober, 1881." I believe this is actually Pontiac, R. I. There is a poem inside in Swedish (?), cut out of an unknown newspaper, marking one of the pages. In Volume 2, there are 3 scraps of torn newspaper, used for bookmarks. 2 of the scraps have some English on them and one says "Providence.", the other scrap is in Swedish (?). There are no family pages contained within this Bible either. If someone could check the 1900 and 1920 census for Pontiac and Providence for me, perhaps I could find descendants. Any help is appreciated. Bea

    1. [RINEWPOR] New resource, Palmer, Clark, Barber Genealogy
    2. Claudia Schuman has transcribed the diary of her great-great grandmother, Esther Palmer Clark, and has donated the transcription to the RIGenWeb Washington County site. It appears Esther had compiled a genealogy for her grandson, Leon Clark Crockett. All information was handwritten in pencil or pen and Claudia has transcribed it as best as she could. There are countless well known Rhode Island surnames that appear in it, Clark, Palmer, Lewis, Tefft, Sherman, Harrington, Brewster, Campbell, Barber, Crockett, Woodward, Wilcox, plus many more. This material is not indexed, you can use the "Find" feature to search for surnames. It may be accessed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~riwashin/Clark/

    1. [RINEWPOR] Garrettson Memorial School
    2. Can anyone on this list tell me more about the school mentioned in the following note from my daughter? "I don't remember who told me about it or where I read about it etc. but...there is or was a school named Garrettson Memorial located at 299 Spring St. in Newport R.I. 02840 What I found today is a little piece of paper ripped out of something else, but on the back is a notation that something was done and the date is 1981. So... this information may be of little or no use, but is interesting." Was the person honored either Frederick Prime Garrettson or his wife Marie Angele (Firth) Garrettson? If it is I would appreciate any data available about them. Except for an extensive piece in "Representative Man and Old Families of Rhode Island," I have not found much on this family. It seems that Frederick's greatgrandfather, Thomas, was a brother of Rev. Freeborn Garrettson, and nephew of the James Garrettson from whom my decent is traced. Thanks, George W. Garrettson

    1. [RINEWPOR] POORHOUSE Information
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We are very excited to be able to tell you about a wonderful project which we are now featuring on our website. The PORTSMOUTH ASYLUM Project is doing a great job exploring, researching and communicating the history of this old poorhouse. We have just posted links to this valuable resource. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on RHODE ISLAND on the table of states. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. You will find the project marked with a big yellow NEW arrow. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    3. Hello, This is a followup to my previous request for information on John Wendel. I may have found John Wendel in the Social Security Index and his date of death is Jul 1969 (no specific day specified). Date of birth matches very closely with what I have from some letters of his father in 1891 and 1892. His residence in 1966 and 1967 when he applied for his social security card was in the zip code of 02834 (which I think no longer exists). If anyone could help me find his obituary or death record that would be very helpful and very appreciated. I'd like to find any surviving children or other family. Many thanks, Bernie Hirsch

    3. If you're on the SHERMAN surname list also, you may receive this twice. Hi - First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Deborah Johnson, I prefer just Deb. About 25 years ago, my step father began tracing our roots, unfortunately, he passed 10 years ago, and I'm now attempting to finish (as best as I can anyway) what he started, primarily for my half-brother and his mother and brothers. On a recent trip back home to New Jersey, USA (I live in California now), I brought back with me all of his notes. Please take a look at the brief (husbands and wives, w/ some dates) lineage I'm posting, this is my step father's direct line to the best of my knowledge. If you have any connection, or can help me fill in some of the blanks, or point me to some awesome links, I'd love to hear from you. I've been doing this now for about two years, but have been concentrating mainly on my maternal line and blood paternal line, so, I'm not completely green when it comes to genealogy.
