Good morning Dave, I think it is possible I might be a descendant of Lorentz Springer b. 1646 Wismar d. 1701 Tiverton, RI m. Martha ? b. 1648 Little Compton, RI. You might try Bristol Co. Mass I think Taunton MA. At one time both Little Compton and Tiverton were part of Bristol Co. Mass and I believe Taunton was the county seat. Hi Dave I have found the early land records of Tiverton R.I. right in Fall River at the Registry of Deeds, at the Court House on North Main Street. The index book has the dates 1686-1862 on it. I was looking for my Gifford line information, and was surprised to see the same Tiverton Records there as I got when I went to the Tiverton Town Hall. After the record it says "a true copy from the transcripts of Tiverton Records deposited in the Registry of Deeds for the No. Dist. of Bristol Co." Then has the book # and Page # and then says "Attest: Emma E. Gray, Examiner" These records are easier to read than the records at the Tiverton Town Hall. Maybe there are some Little Compton records there too, since it was once part of Bristol Co. Massachusetts. I hope you have a lot of luck in searching the books. Marge
You should check out the Brownell Library on the Commons in Little Compton, RI as there is much information in the room in the back of the library. Good Luck! Judith
Hi, Trying to trace very early land transactions starting around 1660 in Little Compton & Tiverton, Mass (Now Rhode Island). Does anyone have suggestions. I have been to the Little Compton Town Hall and the FIRST transaction I can find with the name of JONATHAN (SPRINGER) selling some of his land to HENRY HEAD in 1708. I have read that most of the land in Tiverton and Little Compton FIRST belonged to Benjamin CHURCH in the Pocasset land purchase from the Plymouth Bay Colony. Trying to locate when Lawrence Springer who died in 1703/4 FIRST purchased his land. Sometime between 1660-1708. Dear Pat: Their servers are apparently overloaded. The weekends are almost impossible to get in. I just checked now ( Monday am) and it's OK. I've also used an URL of: www.newenglandancestors.org on occasion and got it. This address was from a long time ago and I don't know why it still exists but it's worth a shot. Hi Listers Do any of you have the above Site? I have tried all weekend to get into this site and I am unable to access it (I had the same problem last weekend or the weekend before). Error states technical problems or broken server. I seem to have this problem frequently, especially on weekends and wondered if any one else encounters this same problem with the site. Thanks Pat R
I do not know for a certainty that he is mine, folks, but I am seeking a Wilson W CHEW Jr whose parents were Wilson W and Stella CHEW originally of Westchester County, New York. The time frame makes this Wilson CHEW of Tiverton, Newport County, Road Island, an inviting possibility. In fact, he is one of the only 2 in the entire country listed in the SSDI, and there is *none* in the online phonebooks! Can you help me with this fellow? Thanks, Vince Summers
Dear Pat: Yes, I think it's down. I even tried a "ping" test and a "trace route" and they both come up no joy :-(. I have "The History and Roster of Rhode Island Masonry in World War II" and will be glad to look up any of your ancestors who may have been Masons who served in the Military at that time. There are over 100 pages of names. They are listed according to which TOWN and LODGE they belonged to. There is no general index so they must be looked up one by one. Please give the name of the TOWN in which you think they may have been a member. There are also photos from the 1940's: Albert W. Claflin Raymond L Vaughn David Arnoti Ralph simpson Herbert A. I just received an original copy of "The Family of Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield" by Benjamin Apthorp Gould (Lynn, Mass.: Thomas P. Nichols, 1895. It states on p. 397 that in 1656 the grandfather of this Daniel GOULD, who was the Daniel Gould who m. Wait the dau. of John & Mary COGGLESHALL, embraced the doctrines of the Quakers. The format used to denote the date of birth of the children, referring to the month of the (Old Calendar) year, was also used by the Quakers. [Many people have erroneously converted these months of the year to dates of the new calendar!] There are many indications that the Anna GOULD, b. 14 May 1741, who m. Charles DEAKE/DAKE of Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island was a Baptist. Charles DEAKE/DAKE and his son Charles, Jr. were both Deacons in the Baptist church first established in Washington Co., NY, about 1772 by the Rev. (Elder) William WAITE, from Wickford, Kent Co., RI. The log church he had built was burned by the British during the "Battle of Bennington" (sic, Walloomsac, 4 miles NE of Hoosick Falls in Rensselaer Co., in New York, not VT)*. There is an historical marker to that effect. County: WASHINGTON; Town: WHITE CREEK, TOWN OF A LOG CHURCH WHICH STOOD HERE WAS BURNED BY THE BRITISH BATTLE OF WALLOOMSAC AUG. 16, 1777 Location: ON COUNTY RD. ABOUT 1-1/2 MILES WEST OF (the town of) WHITE CREEK [The location is in White Creek Twp. of Washington Co., NY about 2 miles North of the Battle. White Creek is 6 miles NE of Hoosick Falls (2 miles NE of the battle) ] * The reason why this significant battle of the Rev. War was named "The Battle of Bennington " is a whole different (political) story! George W. Over the years many researchers (including me) have erroneously identified the Anna GOULD who was the daughter of Daniel and Mary (BROWN/BROWNE) GOULD of Middleton Co., RI, as the Anna GOULD who m. c. 1760 Charles DEAKE/DAKE of RI. I'm searching for parents ancestors of Anna GOULD, b. in May 1741 in RI. She m. abt. 1760 Deacon Charles DEAKE/DAKE, and they moved to Washington Co., NY. She medically carried for her husband and son after the Battle of Bennington fought on Aug. 16, 1777 during the Rev. War. The Battle of Bennington took place in a village now called Walloomsac, New York. This village is several miles west of Bennington, Vermont. She was probably related to the William Deak (Or Dake) Gould a wounded Rev. War soldier from Albany Co. who went to Nunda, Livingston, NY, in 1819. William Gould was buried on the Levi Gould lot near Richmond and Whitcomb vault with no stone or marker. He died on Nov. 24, 1842 ae 88. His family consisted of: William D.
