You are correct in that Tiverton and Little Compton, and I believe also Bristol, were once part of MA, but Portsmouth and Newport were always and ever Rhode Island. <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/">Newport County RI, USGenWeb Project</A> Barb Austin

I have found land records for Tiverton R.I. at the Fall River Ma. Registry of Deeds. Marge
Just read some of this article. I never heard of Newport and Portsmouth being part of Massachusetts. Any one? Barb Austin
A new article titled "John Wood of Portsmouth, And Some Clarifications About This Line," By Larry Crandall-Wood, has been added to the Newport County, RIGenWeb pages. "The purpose of this article is to publish new research on the Descendents of John Wood of Portsmouth and to point out a few misconceptions about this line. ... John WOOD the Mariner was probably born about 1590-1600 in England, died Mar 1655 Portsmouth, RI." Thanks, Larry, for your generous contribution of your well researched article. http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/JohnWood.html Susan -- Coordinator Newport County RIGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/
For those new to the roots web and those of you veterans I would like to say that there are many folks who subscribe that are willing to do what they can to help others in their research. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 152 prisoners of war on record from the state of Rhode Island and about 100 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. I also do the research for any prisoners from any state that were here. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. Please do not concider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. Hi! A friend of mine has recently published a wonderful new book on the History of the New Brunswick (Canada) WILBUR's. The book covers 10 generations and the years 1482-2002, contains over 468 pages and over 400 photo's and illustrations. It is very well done, with proper sources and well documented. It traces the descendants of Benjamin WILBUR and Sarah BUSH of MA who later moved to Sackville Township (NB) but at the time (1763) it was actually a part of Nova Scotia. Benjamin was born Dec 6 1705, at Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He and Sarah later lived at Swansea MA for about 15 years before moving to Canada. They are they progenitors of the New Brunswick WILBUR's. They had 5 children. Benjamin was the son of Benjamin WILBORE/WILBUR and Mary KINNICUT. Benjamin and Mary had 4 children, following her death in 1708, he married a second time in 1710 to Elizabeth HEAD and had 10 more children. For more information on the book please go to the web page I have created for the authors located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nbcampob/wlbrbk.htm . Or feel free to contact the author, Max MacDonald directly at vermax@nbnet.nb.ca . Thanks!! Heather

This is for David Springer: David: Do you have any Springer's who ended up in KY? Maybe a Charles Springer and Hannah Hardin Springer or Aaron Springer and Mary Ann (Lucy) Hudspeth Springer? Aaron Springer killed in Civil War at Battle of Holly Springs, MS., Dec. 20, 1862. These are my earliest Springers and I can't find anything about them before these two men. Thanks, Julie in CA peshcoo@sierratel.com

I am trying to track the FIRST land transactions of Little Compton & Tiverton. A visit to the Registry of Deed in Fall River, BRISTOL County, Massachusetts shows the land was transferred in 1699 from New Plimouth Colony by William Bradford the Governor of the Plimouth Colony. Where can I find the Pocasset Purchase which includes Tiverton & (Specially) Little Compton? If John Springer (Grantor) sold on March 2 1716 to Joseph Anthony Tiverton (Bk. 3,Pg. 155) would that not make him eligible to become a freeman because he owned land? \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) +-------------------------------oOOo (_) oOOo---------------------+ | Bailey, Borden, Brayton, Coggeshall, Cook, Easton | | Franklin, FOSTER, Freelove, Goff, Griffin, Howard | | Ingraham, Kay, Lake, Lewis, Perry, Smith, Stone, | | SPRINGER,Tennis,West,Winslow,Wordell,Vickery | +-------------------------------------------------Oooo. -----------------+ I'm Searchin' ( ) Dave Springer .oooO ) / 73 Hall Street ( ) (_/ Fall River, MA 02724 \ ( \_) dbspring@earthlink.net Web Site: <http://davespringer.homestead.com/index.html>
