You can request a copy of the death record from the RI archives by email at reference@archives.ri.us. They will send you an uncertified copy for 15 cents a page . I have just added to the Newport County, RIGenWeb pages the 1891 Tax List (tax payers) for the City of Newport, R. I. Also included are lists of city officers, school officials, police and fire department members. These lists contain businesses and individuals and include many estates with the names of the administrators. All the pages have been scanned so you will not have to worry about transcription errors. There are 144 pages of tax lists, and 11 additional pages make up the other lists. http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/NewportTax1891.html Happy Hunting. And when you get ginger ice cream at Gray's at Tiverton 4 corners, you should put one scoop of it on one scoop of chocolate! Yummy! Another interesting "legend" is that there are no four corner intersections in Little Compton. Reason being was that was the only place a Tavern could be built. Apparently early settlers were teetotalers. I guess Tiverton people were more progressive. Judy
You can't get ginger ice cream anywhere but Gray's either! Barb Austin
Bob--You have been away a long time. They are still called coffee "cabinets" here. Judy
I remember the Stone Bridge Inn. My weding reception was held there. And we often would take the drive to gray's for ice cream. I'm sure my grandmother Ruth Ann Tabor and my great aunt Ida Louise Soule got some of those pills. I think I remember some one telling me that before Dr. King there was another doctor. I think White was his name I remember Dr. King used to sit in his car in front of Manchesters Store and read the paper. My sister tells me that Manchesters burned to the ground. What a loss for the village. On Tue, 10 Sep 2002 09:20:15 EDT Brooks1934@aol.com writes: > Hi Bob > I grew up in Little Compton, too. Dr Von Trapp saw our family through many an illness. I know he had children but the only one that I remember is Monique. She had Polio, I believe and that's probably why I remember her. I remember my mother talking about the Stone Bridge Inn and what a wonderful place it was I may have been there myself but I was very young at the time. I seem to remember oyster crackers (a treat to me), strange huh. Standing on the Tiverton side of Stone Bridge was Grinnells Garage to the left side of the bridge? Dr. Von Trapp was a true gentleman. He and his new wife came to visit Dr. King befor he started to practice in Adamsville. The L. C. Community Center just gave 8 performances of The Sound of Music and every one was sold out. One of his children and a grandchild was in the play. Judy
and being the next generation in this conversation, Dr. Von Trapp was my pediatrician........I was his very last patient when he retired and when I got married, he was not able to attend, but sent me warm wishes.......I was saddened by his death, he told me many stories of his life. Hi Bob I grew up in Little Compton, too. Born there and Dr. King was the doctor when I came into the world. When I was fourteen I worked for him on weekends when his regular help (Hilda) was off. He had his own apothecary and I actually filled bottles and little white boxes (remember them) with the pills he prescribed for his patients. Some of the patients got "little pink pills" known as placebos for their "nerves"--a common diagnosis at that time. No State regulations in those days. Judy
Hi Judy His office was on Westport Harbor Road on the right side as you headed out of Adamsville towards the harbor. I was sure you were talking about Dr. King. I grew up in Adamsville and I remember him well. I think I remember that before coming to Adamsville, Dr. King was a surgeon. I remember him making house calls to our house. He practiced into the 1960s. A doctor named Ruppert Von Trapp ( yes that Von Trapp family) started practicing in Adamsville. Even after the new Dr. came to the village my grandmother and her sister would have nothing to do with anyone but Dr. King. He was an excellent doctor.
