I have just added the scans for the more than 400 pages of the "History of the City of Scranton; Providence, Dunmore, Waverly and Humphreysville with Authentic Accounts of the Origin and Present Condition of the Various Railroads, Coal, Iron, and Manufacturing Companies, Churches, Schools, Societies, etc., Etc., of the Places Above Named. Also, Directory & Business Advertisers, for 1867 and 1868." As many of you know, the area was settled by the Slocum and Tripp families, and many others, from Rhode Island. It was even called "Slocum Hollow" for many years. No pages have been left out - even the covers have been scanned. As is typical, the listings include professions and the names of widows. The amount of additional information included is unusual for this kind of publication. For example, there is a History of Scranton by Dr. H. Hollister, including a Sketch of Providence [PA] and Dunmore, and Recollections of Slocum Hollow. NAVIGATION: The work is divided into sections for quicker page loading. The first page of each section contains thumbnail images of each directory page. When a thumbnail is clicked a page is loaded containing the full size image. By clicking on the full size image, the next full size image page will be loaded. The last full size image in a section is connected to the first full size image page of the next section. Thus the whole directory can be navigated by clicking the full size images. And finally, a reminder that the scans are copyrighted by me, even though the original publication is in the public domain. Happy hunting, http://www.rootsweb.com/~scwhite/1867Scranton/ Susan W. Pieroth
MARGE, I really appreciate your taking the time to look thru what you have on Tiverton/Fall River areas. I believe I will write the library there, and ask if they will copy all Francis entried in the book V.R. 1857-1862. That might help some. I really appreciate the information. Thanks, Kathy Wells. ----- Original Message ----- From: <SisFeather@aol.com> To: <RINEWPOR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 16, 2003 3:59 PM Subject: Re: [RINEWPOR] Deaths after 1860? > In a message dated 3/14/03 2:52:21 PM Eastern Standard Time, > rebeltrumpet@sbcglobal.net writes: > > > Newport Researchers, > > I am still a little confused by the boundary lines of Fall River in > > Mass &R.I. area. The main library is being renovated at this time, and they are now temporarily in the building next door. I don't know if they took that book with them in the move. The book does exist, I have looked through it in Aug of 2000. If you call or email them maybe they can help you. They do look ups but I do not know how much they charge. You mentioned in another email that you were looking for Estes. I found it interesting that the name of Edmund Estes appeared in the boundary lines mentioned in this book. I looked through all my resources here at home for your Francis ancestors and found nothing in the Arnold Collection for Tiverton. What I did find on an other CD was the same that you mentioned in the other email. I noticed that Roger Corey's will was probated in N.K. which I suppose was North Kingston R.I., on the chance that your Francis ancestors may have been living there, I checked that out too but nothing there either. Dear Tammy, I don't know if any of this will ultimately help you, but here goes. I am also descended from a Newport Sullivan. My John Sullivan (John Bernard Sullivan) was born on December 29, 1842 in Caherciveen, County Kerry, Ireland. He came over with his parents, Daniel and Bridget, and sister Abby in about 1847. There I believe they joined Daniel's brother Timothy C. Sullivan. Timothy was married to Hannah Curran of Drommond, County Kerry, Ireland. Timothy and Daniel's parents were Michael and Margaret Sullivan. John B. Sullivan served in the Navy during the Civil War and married Mary Murphy of Dublin on November 28, 1867. She came over during the Civil War, had originally planned to settle with family in North Carolina (I think), but blockades prevented that, and she ended up with family of a sort in Newport. As she came over with a cousin, I think the family may have been the cousin's rather than hers, and may have been Fitzgeralds. At any rate, John B. and Mary had 9 children, Irene, Mary Agnes, Michael H., Annie C., Francis B., Elizabeth, Theresa, John B., and Katherine (Kitty). Irene married a Gorman, Mary Agnes married Michael Connolly (my great grandparents), Theresa married Al Fraser and had two children, Michael H. Died age 24 of appendicitis, but may have married and had a daughter, Theresa married Al Fraser, John B. Sullivan I believe also died of appendicitis, but did have two children Robert and Annie, and Kitty married a Boucher. None of which may help you, but what MAY help is that it seems that many of the Sullivans in Newport may have come from Caherciveen, County Kerry, Ireland. I found Daniel and Timothy's stones (along with their wives') together in the old St. Mary's cemetery in Newport, and my mother has the receipt of the purchase of the sites. John B. Sullivan's stone, along with many others in the area was destroyed by vandalism several years ago, and no one seems to know where he is now. My great aunt Alice Connolly told me that her Sullivan grandparents John Sullivan and Mary Murphy) sponsored and took in many people who were recent immigrants from Ireland, and many of them were family and friends, until they were able to support themselves. A couple of other points. I was not born in Newport, my grandfather was. But it is my understanding that the St. Mary's church records burned in 1929 or so, and coincidentally, so did those in Cahersiveen (I was in Ireland in 1993). I was able to obtain some Newport info by writing O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St. Newport RI, 02840, but that was back in 1993. Good Luck in your search. -Pat. Wary amusic@epix.net
Does anyone have any information on any of the following families from Tiverton, R.I., and Freetown, MAS areas: FRANCIS/FRANCES family NEGUS family, COREY/CORY family ESTES family. Newport Researchers, I am still a little confused by the boundary lines of Fall River in Mass & R.I. area. So let me list my problem and/or question and hopefully someone can help. I have William Francis/Frances b. ca 1780 in Tiverton, R.I. I am trying to get the exact name of his father.....probably a John Francis. William was living in Tiverton his whole life, until 1860 census where he is 80 years old, and it shows he is living with his daughter, Anna Perry, wife of Pardon Perry. They are in Fall River, Newport County, R.I. I understand it became mandatory to report deaths after 1853?, so I am wondering where I could find a list of deaths in Tiverton after 1860? I know there was also a Fall River in Bristol Co, MAss also, so do I need to check there also? Hello Listers! I am looking for information on the Sullivan family. Here’s what I know: John SULLIVAN (my gggrandfather) married Johanna MURPHY (MURPHEY) on December 6, 1870 in Newport, Rhode Island. He was born May 1, 1850 in Ireland and Johanna was born on May 15, 1850 in Ireland. Together they had nine children: John L. SULLIVAN born in 1874 in US (probably Rhode Island, but I have no record) Michael SULLIVAN born in 1875 in US (probably Rhode Island, but I have no record) Mary SULLIVAN born in 1877 in US (probably Rhode Island, but I have no record) Annie SULLIVAN born in 1878 in US (probably Rhode Island, but I have no record) Dora SULLIVAN (my ggrandmother) born in 1879 in Ireland Kate SULLIVAN born in 1882 in ? Emily SULLIVAN born in 1884 in Ontario, Canada Thomas F. SULLIVAN born in 1888 in Ontario, Canada Lila SULLIVAN born in 1889 in Ontario, Canada I also know from an inheritance letter my grandmother received (Dora Sullivan’s daughter) from Burdick, Corcoran, and Peckham Attorneys at Law located in Newport, RI in 1951 that John SULLIVAN Sr. had at least two siblings (brothers) also living in the Newport, Rhode Island area. William SULLIVAN died before 1951 and had at least five children two of which were Elizabeth SULLIVAN married to a BOHANAN and Margaret SULLIVAN married to a FITZPATRICK. The other brother, Michael SULLIVAN had at least one child that I know of named Katherine N. SULLIVAN. She died in 1951 in Newport, Rhode Island. I found a Michael SULLIVAN that could be a possible link to the family on the 1920 Census of Newport County Rhode Island. He was 66 at this time and widowed. He worked as a contractor. Both his parents were born in Ireland as was he which all ties in with my family. Any information on any of the these people would be greatly appreciated or information on how to further my research since I am at a standstill and would love to be able to find any other siblings John SULLIVAN Sr. had as well as the names of his parents. Thank you. Tammy Kennedy

Listers, I posted this last week but there were some problems with the email system, some of you may not have received this. Phil- I thoroughly agree with you. Thanks for addressing the issue. Bev
There is no one on this site that knows all the issues involved in any states actions or even their proposals. Anyone who wants to sign a petition when they don't know the issues is naive at best. This is not a Fla. site. Instead of pushing some petition in Fla. say a prayer for the families of the 95 that died in R.I. and for those that are really suffering in the hospital. I have seen many sites ruined when they get off the subject. Phil
The Sacramento CA genealogy group is requesting the same kind of support - which I gave happily - I think this is VERY pertinent to seeking to create, develop and enlarge our personal genealogies - the California State Library has proven to be a wonderful resource for genealogists here - it would be an incalculable loss if it closed. I'm sure the case is the same for Floridians - past and present. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Flsu40@aol.com> To: <RINEWPOR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 21, 2003 2:27 PM Subject: [RINEWPOR] Please help us save our Sate Library for Research!! > Please consider adding your name to the A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE STATE > LIBRARY OF FLORIDA, THE DIVISION OF HISTORIC RESOURCES AND THE MUSEUM OF > FLORIDA HISTORY. > > Please go to http://www.floridahistory.info/petition > add your name and pass it on! > > This message is being sent to you by a friend.
