Hi to the East Down in the South here it is heating up. In the Rhode Island His. Soc. Coll. V. 12 p. 25 is a section about John Greene who married Abigail Wardwell. There is mention of letters to Gen. George W. Greene, compiler of the Warwick Greene Genealogy that there was a letter from a descendant of John stating that after for some reason John had changed his name from John Clarke to John Greene. In the Providence Gazette for Oct. 15, 1797, Ushal Greene stated that his father was a veteran in the Army of Citizen Cromwell of protecting memory, and brought to America a sword with which his father had fought in 11 battles. Does anyone know about this or could shed further light on the name change or about fighting for Cromwell. Is there a book by Gen. George W. Greene?
