You can contact the West Warwick Library and they have a list of the historical cemeteries, etc. They also have some street directories which may be of some help to you. I have moved from Rhode Island to Florida and I don't know if I have their web address but if I find it I will post it for you. Good Luck - Deb
Is there anyone out there who knows anything about Johnson's Ice House on Post Road? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LC Whittle~ http://home.earthlink.net/~lcandl7/page1a.htm
Dear Listers, I 've never posted a thing in my life, but I could use someone's help out there. My g-grandfather was Harry Wolfenden, Born in England the son of Robert Nelson Wolfenden and Sarah Hunt. Harry married Lily Laura Mae Buchanan ( my grandmother claims that lily was the daughter of Leonard Buchanan and Mary Hoar), and he died sometime in 1947. I have found the Wolfendens buried together in West Warwick, RI. Does anyone know where or when Harry and Lily married? Where Harry died? And Does anyone know anything about this Leonard Buchanan and Mary Hoar? Thanks in advance for any help, and please forgive any mistakes in my presentation of the question. Hi All! I'm new to your list and desperate for help. A Michigan census states that Thomas' (the son of Thomas and Zilpha) father was from RI, which brings me to you. We have been researching the following family for about 30 years. THOMAS BATES was born Bet. 1774 - 1784, and died Bet. 1809 - 1810 in VT. He married ZILPHA STAPLES September 13, 1799 in Shaftsbury, VT, daughter of JACOB STAPLES and THANKFUL GOODWIN. She was born April 10, 1778 in Brooklyn, Windham Co., CT. Children of THOMAS BATES and ZILPHA STAPLES are: JACOB BATES, b. 1800; m. NANCY. FRANCIS BATES, b. 1801, Bennington Co. VT; d. March 14, 1883, Pinckney, Livingston, MI. DANIEL STAPLES BATES, b. June 30, 1804, Bennington, VT; d. April 1, 1896, Elyria, Lorain Co., OH. SARAH BATES, b. 1805. THOMAS J. BATES, b. 1806, Bennington Co. VT; d. January 14, 1890, Mason, Ingham, MI. WILLIAM BATES, b. 1809, Bennington Co. VT; d. 1846, Clarendon, Orleans, NY6; m. MELISSA PLATT Very little of this has been documented since the birth and death records for this family do not seem to exist in the state of Vermont during this time period. What I am hoping to do is find Thomas' family from this angle since doing it the other way does not seem to be possible. If anyone can be of any help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Terri

"I WANT" 1. I want ancestors with names like Rudimentary Montagnard or Melchizenick von Steubenhoffmannschild or Spetznatz afortoni, not William Brown or John Hunter or Mary Abbott. 2. I want ancestors who could read and write, had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, went to school, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees), had their photographs taken once a year -- subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate isinglass frames annotated with calligraphic inscriptions, and carved voluble and informative inscriptions in their headstones. 3. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established,still-extant (and indexed) cemeteries. 4. I want family members who wrote memoirs, who enlisted in the military as officers and who served in strategically important (and well documented) skirmishes. 5. I want relatives who served as councilmen, schoolteachers, county clerks and town historians. 6. I want relatives who `religiously' wrote in the family Bible, journaling every little event and detailing the familial relationship of every visitor. 7. In the case of immigrant progenitors, I want them to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by National Archives, and I want them to have applied for citizenship, and to have done so only in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. 8. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, who joined every patrimonial society they could find, who kept diaries, and listed all their addresses, who had paintings made of their houses, and who dated every piece of paper they touched. 9. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and to keep for generations, the tribal homestead, and who left all the aforementioned pictures and diaries and journals intact in the library. 10. But most of all, I want relatives I can FIND!!! "Author Unknown" -- Arlan Maguire...
