    1. Use of Family Surnames as Given Names
    2. ROBERT GREEN
    3. Searching for a reason why an ancestor received a strange given name, Lowry (full name Lowry Green). Have come upon a number of Rhode Island Green's who have clearly been named with the surnames of other families. For instance, Spencer Green, Spicer Green, Matteson Green, Waterman Green, Whipple Green (all are surnames from Kent County in early 1800's). I'm assuming that these names were given in tribute to ancestral surnames in the female line. Might this have been a common practice in a specific religious sect or ethnic group? Occurrences in other families in Rhode Island at about the same time are common also: e.g., Waterman Spencer, Spencer Arnold, Whipple Arnold, Spicer Fish, Whipple Rice, Waterman Stone, Spencer Reynolds, etc. There are also a couple of Green Lowry's, but they are in southern states. Would appreciate any insight you might have on this. I'm posting this question on other mailing lists also. Thanks, Bob Green rcgreen@myfamily.org

    2. Betty, So far I haven't found a direct link to the Tripps, but I do have Nichols that tie into their lines. I am a Williams descendant through his daughter Mercy and her first husband, Resolved Waterman. Most of my Warwick line are from Pawtuxet (Rhodes, Rice, Burrows, Clarkes, & Potters) or Potawomut (Greenes).Good luck, and happy hunting! Trish

    1. John Tripp
    2. Betty G. Tripp
    3. Hi Does anyone know of John Tripp b. 1610 d. 1678 and Mary Paine d. 1687? They were supposed to have had a son, James Tripp b. 1656 who had two wives--Lydia Unknown and Mercy Lawton. John Tripp was Court of Commissioners 1654, 55, 61, 62 and 63. He was the Assistant for many years and also served as Deputy to General Assembly 1664, 66, 67, 69, 70 and 72. The Tripps in Beaufort Co., NC are supposed to be descended from this line of James and Lydia Tripp. James was and Ensign 1689 (what does that mean?). There is mention of Peleg Tripp, RI, Deputy 1681 and 1686. Does anyone have the family line for them? They were supposed to have come South before the Revolution.--Betty ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 2. Betty, I don't know of any myself, I'm sorry to say. It's a pretty little church though. My grandmother went there for years. She was almost 94 when she pasted away this past January. The retired pastor, Pastor Bell, came out special to do her service. It seems like a nice parish. Sorry about not having any pictures! :( Trish
