Hello to all. I have been searching for the ancestry of Mahala RIGGS, b. about 1806, married Elkanah Lewis (the 3rd, I think) in Surry Co. VA. Mahala was a daughter of Lott RIGGS. Her mother was a ROSS. The evidence is that she was a daughter or granddaughter of John ROSS, Cherokee Indian chief. Recently I found Mahala's full name given as MAHALA AMANGAHALA RIGSBY RIGGS. I have noted that Amangahala has a bit of an N/A sound. I don't know how the Rigsby fits in here, although it sounds very much like a surname related to RIGGS. John Ross actually had very little Cherokee blood, or that is my impression. About one-eighth, I think. Maybe somebody knows more about this. An mtDNA test of Mahala Riggs's line shows that her ancestral mother was in Europe 10,000 years ago. Just one line, of course. I think I have a list of Mahala's siblings now. Maybe. If anybody is interested in this line, please let me know.
