Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HSDBAIB/1442 Message Board Post: Yet another transcript of a document has been found in my notes. This document gives more information about a line of Riggs that was mentioned in the last posting I made. This is not my line of Riggs so it is no good asking me for anymore information.I thought it may help others. Remember in the last posting, there was a Sarey(Sarah) Riggs (Line C). this new found document is about her and her husband, and what the descendants the researcher found about that line. If you add this new information to the information from my last posting, I think you will have a wider picture. *********************************************************************** RIGGS' FAMILY HISTORY OF MARION COUNTY, KY. (Compiled by J. Michael Ryan, Louisvill, Ky.) (Sources: Records of James Minor & Riggs Family Bible) FIRST GENERATION The Riggs family can be traced into Maryland in the 17 s. The first Generation of Riggs is thought to have been John Riggs who was probably born in Montgomery County, Maryland. He died about 1794. He married his wife, Sarah Yeaman, about 1770 in Maryland. The Riggs Family were not unlike many Catholic families who immigrated from Maryland in order to settle in Central part of Kentucky which, at the time, was being settled by families who wanted to establish and be able to practice their Catholic Faith in communities surrounded by other Catholics. (HISTORICAL NOTE: It should be noted that until 1792, Kentucky was part of Virginia. Therefore, anyone born prior to that time, in what is now Kentucky. may be listed as being born in Virginia. Secondly, it should be noted that Marion County, Ky. was originally a part of Washington County, Ky. Marion County was seperated from Washington County on January 25, 1834. Therefore, anyone born prior to that time, in what is now Marion County, may be listed as being born in Washington County.) SECOND GTENERATION ARRIVES INTO KENTUCKY The first Riggs to come to Kentucky is thought to have been John Riggs (Jr) (born about 1780 in Maryland) who married Mary Newton (born about the same time in Virginia). They were married in Washington County, Ky. John and Mary Newton Riggs are thought to have had at least 3 children, i,e,: 1 daughter (Jane) and 2 sons (Henry-born about 1818; and John-born abt 1812). THIRD GENERATION---HENRY RIGGS Henry Riggs was born about 1815 and married Elizabeth Mattingly (the daughter of Barton Mattingly and Anne Smith). She died on April 6, 1872. They had 8 children: DAUGHTERS were: Maria 1. (born Ky abt 1840), 2. Mary Jane (born Ky. abt. 1840), 3. Eliza (Born Ky. abt.1843), 4. Polly A. (Born Ky.abt. 1844), 8. Elizabeth A. (born Ky. abt 1855). SONS: 5. John Wilson Riggs (born Union Co, Ky 1845), 6. James Riggs (born abt 1847) and 8. William Parker Riggs (born Ky. 1850). Following the death of his wife Elizabeth in April 1872, Henry Riggs married his second wife, Sara Nally in October 1872. We do not know if there were any children from this union. JOHN RIGGS: John Riggs was born in Kentucky about 1821 and died in 1873 in Marion Co. Ky He married Mary Ellen Mattingly, (also the daughter of Barton Mattingly and Anne Smith) in St. Vincents Church, Union County, Ky on 4/10/1845. (Therefore, both Henry and his brother John married Mattingly sisters). John and Ellen Riggs had 5 Children: DAUGHTERS: 1. Mary Malinda Ann (born Union Co. 1845), 4. Anna Elizabeth (born abt.1850), 5. Jane (born abt 1854), SONS: 2. James (born abt 1847), Thomas (born abt 1848). JANE RIGGS Jane riggs was born in Kentucky about 1806 and died after 1880. She married James A.
