Sue asked "Has anyone been able to take the MA line back to England at all?" I assume from your mention of FRANCIS RIGGS, Sue, that you meant MD and so I'm replying on that basis - I've omitted (all but one) collateral lines from the following descent:- THOMAS RIGGS d.1551 Mayor of Southampton, Hants, 1542 & 1549 m.JANE ---- d.1559 (not Jane Richardson, as some researchers quote. since she was the wife of the separate Thomas Riggs of Lincolnshire) |_THOMAS d.1568 m. ---- ---- |_RAFE d.1604 Fareham, Hants m. MARY BLAKE d.1612 |_FRANCIS 1583-1630 | m.CATHRIN KNIGHT d.1638 | |_JOSEPH d.1671 Calvert Co.MD - lived in VA 1667 when he | claimed estate of 1st cousin FRANCIS, see below) |_RALPH 1589-1647 Mayor of Winchester 1629, 1636 & 1645 | m.MARY JOHNSON | |_EDMOND d.1660 Mayor of Winchester 1649 & 1654 |_JOHN 1594-1636 Merchant of Southampton (probably the JOHN with land in Ann Arundel Co.MD,1636 as his will refers to adventures beyond the seas) m.MARIE BLAKE HOPGOOD in 1623 at Fareham |_JOHN (eldest son, may be the JOHN with land in | Norfolk Co,VA,1653) |_FRANCIS d.1667 intestate with 2300 ac Calvert Co MD The above RIGGS appear to have been strong Catholics, whereas in contrast EDWARD of Roxbury, MA emigrated because of his strong faith in the Puritan religion. The above family is referred to in detail at the beginning of "The Riggs Family of Maryland", by John Beverley Riggs, originally published in Baltimore, MD, 1939, a copy of which is in the LDS Family History Library Catalogue. I have extended the line forward a little (primarily in Sussex, ENG) but cannot go backward beyond Thomas - details will eventually appear on my web-site (when I have sufficient free time). Hope this helps Geoff RIGGS Riggs Surname Study - http://www.riggs.org.uk Chepstow, South Wales, UK ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Riggs" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 24, 2002 1:18 AM Subject: [RIGGS-L] Fw: William Riggs will of 1828 ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 23, 2002 5:30 PM Subject: William Riggs will of 1828 > List, > > I called the courthouse in Ray County, and talked to the clerk there, and > they do not have death records or a record of wills back to 1828.
