The family of Jeremiah Riggs and Betsy Rigsby are my ancestors. My daughter and I have been working on our family tree for a few years and this is just about as far back as we have gotten. However if you discover that this is also your family; we have the death notice which was printed in a New York newspaper for Merritt Woodruff Riggs, my gggrandfather. We also have copies of a letter sent from William Delancy Riggs to my grandmother Jeanette Susan Teal Riggs. Be glad to share information. This is the first I've heard of a connection between the two surnames. In some versions of her name my gr-gr-gr-grandmother Mahala Riggs Lewis is called MAHALA AMANGAHALA RIGSBY RIGGS. I would love to know when and where this connection between RIGGS and RIGSBY took place. Mahala Riggs was born in 1806 and married Elkanah Lewis in Surry Co., NC. I have no explanation of Amangahala. I do think it has a Native American flavor.
