Greetings, Interested as to possible primary source for BROWNE as maiden surname of Mary, wife of Edward Riggs III, or is this from an on-line tree? Based on my own research, there is no proof to support the statement that Edward Riggs III was married to Mary Browne. Edward III was almost certainly married to Mary Munn; the following is from my e-mail about Mary Munn from January 2002: From: "Evan R. Thompson" <[email protected]> Subject: [RIGGS-L] Edward Riggs III & Mary Munn Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2002 00:15:19 -0600 In trying to establish the identity of Edward Riggs III's wife, the following might be of some use. Note that this was an oral will, therefore, detailed formalities such as "too thee mye beloved darling datter" etc. are left out. ---- New Haven Probate Records, Volume One, Part Two, page 6 "A writting presented as the last will and testament of Daniell Munne of Milford deceased exhibited in County Court held at New Haven June 13th 1666 Wee heard Daniell Munne say that all that I have, that is my owne estate I give to Mary Rigs, onely if any of my brethren come, and be as strangers here, that shee would carry it kindly to him or them, and might give to him or them twenty or thirty shillings. Robert Deneson his R marke Mrs Sarah Whitman S W her marke The witnesses sworn and administration granted to Mary Rigs." ----- If "Mary Rigs" is the wife of Edward III, they were married prior to 13 June 1666. Of course, nothing in the above cited probate record directly establishes that Mary "Rigs" was the daughter of "Daniell Munne," but it is very strong indirect evidence. Hopefully this clears up the confusion. Terrence, Daniel was the son of Joseph, Sr. and wife Sarah ??? (last name unknown). Joseph, Sr. was the son of Edward, Sr. and Mary Browne. Edward, Sr. was the son of Edward, Sgt and then to Edward of Roxbury. I note that my listing of Daniel's children have slightly different spellings. Are your Bible records clearly written? I ask this because my family's Bible records are difficult to read in some areas. If your records are clear, I'll use your spelling as the legitimate source. Between Sept. to Dec. of 1776, Daniel lost his wife and four children. Since this was the same time period as the Smallpox epidemic, it could probably be surmised that this was the cause of so many dying within that short period of time. Hope this helps, Sarah (Riggs) de Bree

ONE HUNDRED AND TWO YEARS AGO................... >From a book called "When My Grandmother Was a Child" by Leigh W. Rutledge, which begins, "In the summer of 1900, when my grandmother was a child..." The average life expectancy in the United States was forty-seven. Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was ten mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the US was twenty-two cents an hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home. Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants. The five leading causes of death in the US were:1.Pneumonia and influenza, 2. Tuberculosis, 3.Diarrhea, 4. Heart disease, 5. Stroke. The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families. Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Only men could vote. One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist , "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine. Punch-card data processing had recently been developed, and early predecessors of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the 1900 census. Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were about 230 reported murders in the US annually. --
Margaret: All information points to John RIGGS being son of Samuel RIGGS [1760-1846]. This is the same John RIGGS who died in 1849 and his will is on Hawkins Co, TN page. According to the late Leo RIGGS and a few other RIGGS researchers; Samuel RIGGS and first wife Mary "Polly" MORRIS had the following children: 1. Lewis RIGGS; born 20 Jun 1792 2. Jesse RIGGS was born 1795 3. Russell J. RIGGS was born about 1798 4. John RIGGS was born 1802 5. Pleasant Maynard RIGGS was born about 1807 6. Ellis M. RIGGS was born ca 1813/14 According to research papers of the late Leo RIGGS, he also thought Nancy RIGGS who married Shadrick MORRIS, Jr in 1804 was dau of Samuel but she was the daughter of Reuben RIGGS and Mary CRAWFORD. Leo also thought Casandra RIGGS who married Richard GRAVES in 1805 was dau of Samuel RIGGS but she was dau of John RIGGS from Maryland who died in Jefferson Co, TN in 1833/34. Leo also listed a Matilda RIGGS [A tentative identification only....his words] born in NC in 1790 as dau of Samuel. She died in Jefferson Co, TN after 1850......she was shown in 1850 Census of Jefferson County, TN as a pauper and a resident of the poorhouse. Rosey: The pages in the 1870 Census were to large when the census was put in book form, generally the page numbers are twice the number that appears on Microfilm.
