    1. [RIGGS-L] Re: John RIGGS [1802--1849] son of Samuel?
    2. Margaret: The late Leo RIGGS had come to the conclusion that John RIGGS was the son of Samuel RIGGS by all the circumstancial evidence available. His information on John RIGGS is as follows: John RIGGS was born in Hawkins Co, TN about 1802. He died in Hawkins County, TN say early 1849 at 46 years of age. (Will on Hawkins County, TN page) He married twice. He married Susannah CHAPMAN 19 Jan 1824 in Jefferson County, TN. She died in Hawkins Co, TN about 1832. He married Mary W. about 1832 in Tennessee. Mary was born 1807 in Virginia. She married ______JOHNS about 1828 in Hawkins County, TN. She died in Hamblen Co, TN 23 Mar 1873 at 65 years of age. (She left Will also?). In John RIGGS Will 31 Jan 1849 in Hawkins Co, TN Mary wasw named as an heir. In the census of 1850, Mary was listed as a head of household in Hawkins Co, TN. Mary was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census of 5 Jul 1870 in Hawkins Co, TN. She made a Will on 17 Mar 1873 in Hamblin County, TN. He served on a Jury 2 Oct 1821 in Hawkins Co, TN. John registered to pay taxes 1836 in Hawkins Co, TN. He testified for Lieutenant Samuel RIGGS Pension Application 6 Aug 1845 in Hawkins Co, TN. He made a Will 31 Jan 1849 In Hawkins Co, TN (Hawkins Co, TN Will Book #1, page 426). There is no other John RIGGS in East Tennessee (after 1834). But with the lack of additional proofs this must be tentative. (Leo was not 100% sure) John RIGGS and Mary W. had the following children: 1. Samuel Thompson RIGGS was born 1833. (was Samuel named after Johns Father???) 2. Eliza Jane RIGGS was born 1833. 3. James V. RIGGS ws born in Jefferson Co, TN 1837. He died before 17 Mar 1873 at approximately 35 years of age. In John RIGGS Will 31 Jan 1849 in Hawkins Co, TN james was named as an heir. He was listed as a household member of Mary W. house in Census of 1850 Hawkins Co, TN. Not shown as living in mothers Will in 1873. 4. Pleasant Marion RIGGS was born 1839. (Was Pleasant named after Samuel RIGGS son and John's brother? Pleasant Maynard RIGGS?) I believe that ALL the circumstancial evidence points to John being the son of Samuel BUT can't figure out why neither John nor his children are named in any of the Deeds made out by Samuel to his children and grandchildren in 1844 in Hawkins Co, TN..........Could there have been a personality conflict in 1844 that was corrected by 1845 when John helped Samuel with updating his Rev War Pension to that of an Officer (Lieutenant) from Private. The mystery deepens....... Bobby G. Carwile

    2. Hi Sue, Sorry to say that non of my Samuel Riggs fit your details if you are sure your Samuel was born in 1796. The closest I can come up with has my Samuel's parents married in 1806 in Accomack County Virginia. Also Bethuel Riggs is not of my line at all. My Riggs line starts in 1687 with Abraham Riggs age 13 and brother Isaac age 15 both brought to Accomack County, Virginia under the "Head Rights Law". Sorry I can't be of any help this time.

    3. According to David Riggs' family Bible, Edward Riggs was born 16 April 1786. Family papers indicate he married "Miss Sheffield." This appears to be the same family. I don't have any information about a Durham marriage. 1. [RIGGS-L] Edward & Timothy Riggs of NJ and NC
    2. Evan R. Thompson
    3. Greetings, I was wondering what documentation exists proving that the Edward Riggs who married Jane Buckley in Morristown, NJ is the same Edward Riggs who moved to NC. Also, wondering if anyone knows if the Timothy Riggs who was a Justice of the Peace in Rutherford Co., NC is a separate person from the Timothy Riggs who was a surveyor of said county. Finally, is there are source for Timothy Riggs, Sr.'s marriage to Sarah "Dunkham," or is this mere conjecture? There are no Dunkham families in Morris County. What is the basis of this conjecture? Evan

    3. David, I am looking for information on my Samuel Riggs born in 1796. There is a Samuel Riggs born in that year that is said to be the son of Bethuel Riggs and Nancy Lee, and who is supposed to have married an Elizabeth Sutton. I am looking for any documentation of these alleged facts. My Samuel Riggs born in 1796 that we thought might be the son of Bethuel, married Sebrina Splawn. He died about 1842, and the other Samuel is said to have died in 1835 LA. Trying to determine if these are one and the same man, or two distinct individuals. 1. [RIGGS-L] Wife of Jesse RIGGS [1758--1832] Was she Rachel EVANS?......
    2. Seeking information on Wife of Jesse RIGGS [1758--1832] who died in Lincoln County, TN. The information on her tombstone is as follows: "Here lies Rachel RIGGS the wife of Jesse RIGGS was born April the 6 day 1771 & was married February the 10 1791 Decs'd September the 25 Day 1816 Was the mother of 6 suns and 8 daughters." I recently found info in an EVANS page that states she was an EVANS but gives wrong birth date on her. It states her date of birth at 1797 which was 6 years after she married if this is the right Rachel EVANS and right Jesse RIGGS. Jesse RIGGS brother Clisby RIGGS married a Jane EVANS so there could be a connection there. 2. Evan R. Thompson
    3. Greetings, Sue Hodnett has been working hard to find parents for her Samuel Riggs b. 1796, who was married to Sabrina Splawn. In 1850, Sabrina (Splawn) Riggs was a widow. She was living with her daughter-in-law in Caldwell Co., MO. Name spelled incorrectly as "Sabina." 1850 US Census, Caldwell Co., MO, 26 August 1850, #5-5 William Hoover, 34, M, Blacksmith, $500, b. OH Mary Hoover, 24, F, b. MO John Hoover, 5, M, b. MO Jacob Hoover, 5, M, b. MO Sabina Riggs, 43, F, b. KY, can't r/w Charity Riggs, 16, F, b. MO Azariah Riggs, 13, M, b. MO Francis Riggs, 10, M, b. MO Noticing that Sabrina's children were all born in MO between 1826 and 1840, I checked the 1840 Missouri census for Samuel. Four possibilities: 1. Samuel Riggs, Boone Co. p. 122, age 20-29 (b. 1811-1820) (too young) 2. Samuel Riggs, Boone Co. p. 124, age 50-59 (b. 1781-1790) (too old) 3. Samuel Riggs, Jackson Co., p. 72, age 40-49 (b. 1791-1800) (possible) 4. Samuel Riggs, Jackson Co., p. 77, age 30-39 (b. 1801-1810) (possible) Comparing the householders with a list of children Sue gave me for Samuel, it appears that Samuel is one of the two men from Jackson Co. Looking back to 1830, Timothy Riggs, age 60-69 was living in Jackson Co. with his wife. Wallace suggests that Timothy Riggs, Jr. d. 1831 in Missouri; Wallace also shows a son Samuel, b. ca. 1793. Can anyone prove that Sue Hodnett's Samuel Riggs b. 1796 is the same Samuel Riggs b. ca. 1793, son of Timothy Riggs, Jr.? Evan P.S. Still collecting TX data.
