Mr. Carwile-- what's happened to Leo Riggs? This must be something that happened currently--judging from the e-mails to the Riggs site. Can you please tell me how I can submit a couple of pages narrative to the RIGGS rootsweb site? I have found what I needed to correct some information in Rev. Lucas Vol I concerning ELIZA JANE RIGGS, dau of JOHN and MARY W. RIGGS. It's a long story, but Lucas has Raleigh J. Dodson married lst to a Tabitha Anderson. Dodson bible records dispute this. I need to send this info to both the RIGGS and the DODSON sites. Thanks-- Margaret Findley in Louisiana BGCarwile@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 9/2/2002 12:55:49 PM Central Daylight Time, MRWREW@aol.com > writes: > > > Must be slow message time I haven't received any either. Sue asked "Has anyone been able to take the MA line back to England at all?" I assume from your mention of FRANCIS RIGGS, Sue, that you meant MD and so I'm replying on that basis - I've omitted (all but one) collateral lines from the following descent:- THOMAS RIGGS d.1551 Mayor of Southampton, Hants, 1542 & 1549 m.JANE ---- d.1559 (not Jane Richardson, as some researchers quote. since she was the wife of the separate Thomas Riggs of Lincolnshire) |_THOMAS d.1568 m. ---- ---- |_RAFE d.1604 Fareham, Hants m. MARY BLAKE d.1612 |_FRANCIS 1583-1630 | m.CATHRIN KNIGHT d.1638 | |_JOSEPH d.1671 Calvert Co.MD - lived in VA 1667 when he | claimed estate of 1st cousin FRANCIS, see below) |_RALPH 1589-1647 Mayor of Winchester 1629, 1636 & 1645 | m.MARY JOHNSON | |_EDMOND d.1660 Mayor of Winchester 1649 & 1654 |_JOHN 1594-1636 Merchant of Southampton (probably the JOHN with land in Ann Arundel Co.MD,1636 as his will refers to adventures beyond the seas) m.MARIE BLAKE HOPGOOD in 1623 at Fareham |_JOHN (eldest son, may be the JOHN with land in | Norfolk Co,VA,1653) |_FRANCIS d.1667 intestate with 2300 ac Calvert Co MD The above RIGGS appear to have been strong Catholics, whereas in contrast EDWARD of Roxbury, MA emigrated because of his strong faith in the Puritan religion. The above family is referred to in detail at the beginning of "The Riggs Family of Maryland", by John Beverley Riggs, originally published in Baltimore, MD, 1939, a copy of which is in the LDS Family History Library Catalogue. I have extended the line forward a little (primarily in Sussex, ENG) but cannot go backward beyond Thomas - details will eventually appear on my web-site (when I have sufficient free time). List, I need some dates verified please. When did William, son of Timothy Jr. and Nancy Welsh/Welch die? I have one record that states he died in 1828 MO, and one record I have seen states he died in 1853, and Timothy died in 1831 in the home of his son, Wm. Both Williams are listed as the son of Timothy O. who married Nancy Welch. But if William died in 1828, where did Timothy his father die? Help please? If William died in 1853, who is the other William, or did someone just grossly err? Sue
Listers, I am now working on the possibility that our SAmuel Riggs born about 1796, could be the son of Timothy Jr. Riggs and Nancy Welch, as they have a son Samuel born about 1793. I haven't seen any material on him personally. A Samuel (or maybe two?) and Timothy were both living in Jackson County, MO at the same time. Checking censuses of 1830 and 1840 there are two Samuel Riggs in in 1840 there. Can anybody help me distinguish between the two Samuels? One Samuel may have come from Ray County, Mo just before 1830. It seems a Samuel Riggs witnessed a will for a William Riggs in 1828 Ray County, MO. I don't know if that William was a brother, uncle or father, or maybe even a cousin to Samuel. I haven't found that will yet. It is in "Miisouri Pioneers, Vol 8, p. 49-- Ray County, MO Probate Records, Book A, p. 40, according to one woman. Does anyone have access to those works? Or do you know a call number for them if they can be ordered in at a local FHC? I think our Samuel may have come from TN to MO following a normal migration route. Does anyone know if Timothy Jr was in TN? Maybe Bedford County? One source says he died in the house of his son, William, in MO, which is interesting. This Samuel Riggs may have traveled with his in-laws, the Splawns moving through TN and MO, coming out of NC or SC? Maybe passed through Cooper or Howard Counties and on up the Missouri River to Ray and Daviess Counties? As I say, there seems to be a basic mirgration route through there most people followed. Samuel may have lived awhile in Caldwell County, or that may be where his wife Sebrina moved to live with her daughter Mary and husband William Hoover, after Samuel died. She is there with at least her brother, Isaac Splawn, living close by in 1850. Later she was found in Grundy County after a second marriage. I would welcome any help with these Samuels any of you could give me. I appreciate the email by Evan Thompson who got me to looking at Jackson County, MO. Any more help out there? Sue
