HI Marvalene, Thanks for the response! I have had a lot of responses and suggestions from several people. Your entry is interesting...up until I read it I was sure that Andrew that I'm looking for is s/o Martin b 1843...now I'm not so sure. It does get confusing. It was bad enough trying to keep track of my own line with the same name in several generation...now there is another ! (LOL) I'm also without my primary computer and have no access to my genealogy files and updated address book etc. We had a bad virus that destroyed our hard drive so I'm doing all this from memory. I hope to get it back this week. I'll let you know if I find out anything. Thanks again, Bridget
Bridget, I don't know is this is the same Andrew Dye you are seeking, but from a book of deaths that I have, I found the following: Dye, Andrew, (b) 6-23-1843, Oh. (d)5-13-1917, Harrisonville, Oh. S/O Martin Dye of Va. and Margaret Bradfield of Va. Informant: Harry Dye. Buried at Shipman. Also, Dye, Martin, (b) 1-28-1879, Oh. (d) 2-25-1918, Scipio Twp. S/OAndrew Dye of unknown and Sarah J. Skinner of Oh. Informant: Harry Dye. Buried at Shipman. I am still actively seeking information on the Riggs/Dye Iowa story also. Maybe someday, we can source it. marvalene@columbus.rr.net ----- Original Message ----- From: <BCouch1015@aol.com> To: <RIGGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 25, 2002 2:53 AM Subject: [RIGGS-L] Meigs Co Ohio book, Riggs/Dye > Dear list: > > I posted the following message on the DYE list and the Meigs Co Ohio list. Dear list: I posted the following message on the DYE list and the Meigs Co Ohio list. I thought I would also post it here as the story has the Riggs family in it. I received some good responses and look forward to more discussion about this story. Bridget _________________________ Dear list: I recently received copies of more than 50 pages of a "book" written in 1948 by Mrs. M.E. Welch of Meigs County Ohio. The book is titled "Scipio Township, Meigs County Ohio: Some Historical facts/complied by Mrs. M.E. Welch fot he Return Jonathon Meigs Chapter, NSDAR" The only place this book seems to be located is at the State Library of Ohio in Columbus. It may be the only copy. The book is made up of two parts, the beginning is a history of Ohio/Meigs CO.and I don't have those pages. The second part is made up of brief family histories. There are several references to the Dye family. One story I'm trying to source is the story of Riggs-Dye family that went to Iowa and the parents, Wm James Riggs and Violena Dye who died without a sourcing of date, place or cause of death. The story is referenced twice in the book, once in the Riggs section and again under Thomas Dye. One interesting part in the Thomas Dye section is as follows: page 99 James and his wife both died in Iowa, left a large family of small children, and Thomas Dye hired Geo. Downing to go to Iowa and bring them home to him. Andrew Dye gives a very interesting account of this trip. Andrew Dye is referenced again on the next page under Catherine Dye and Jacob Uhl. I think I need to reference the entire paragraph. I have typed it exactly as it appears. page 100 "Cather and Jacob Uhl M. Dec. 30, 1819." (from the marriage records of wood Co VA. ( Now West VA.) This was a daughter of Thomas Dye Sr. and Jane Mankin his wife. From the marriage date she was probably the oldest child. Andrew Dye knows of her, though this is the only record we have and he says they went to California. Does anyone have information on this Andrew Dye? He must have been living during 1940-48 while this book was being written. I'm wondereing if his account of the Riggs/Dye trip to Iowa is written down in someone's notes somewhere. I'm hoping to find a place of death in Iowa for the Riggs family and possibly a date as well. I'm hoping there are some notes left by Andrew. Does someone know of his birth-death dates and how he fits into the Meigs Co Dye families? Anyone on the list a descendant of this Andrew? Thanks loads, Bridget Couch
Looking for more information about Timothy Riggs, found in Rutherford, NC 1782 tax list. Also, Timothy Riggs married ANN WELCH 14 March 1785 in Rutherford County, NC. Timothy later removed to Warren Co, KY and Christian Co, KY where he died 1805. Israel Riggs (born before 1775) was listed in four deeds in Rutherford County NC, all dated 1809. Israel Riggs married Elizabeth Wisnant (Whisenhunt) on 28 Feb 1811 in neighboring Lincoln Co, NC. Israel Riggs then showed up in Christian County, KY tax lists 1815-1819 and enumerated 1820 Elkton Twp, Todd County (part of Christian), Kentucky. What is the relationship between these two RIGGS? Where and when did Israel Riggs die?
I have information that the late Leo Riggs sent to me that says that Timothy Riggs that you are looking for was born in Morris Co. NJ about 1722 and died in Christian Co, Ky before 3 May 1805 at approximately 82 years of age. He says that Timothy first married Sarah Dunham about 1748 in Morris Co, NJ and that Sarah was born about 1730 in NewJersey. She died in Tryon Co, NC before 1765. He married Hannah before 1765 in Tryon Co, NC. Nancy was born about 1743. She died in Christian Co, KY 15 Sep 1815 or later at 72 years of age. She made a will 15 Sep 1815 in Christian Co. KY. Leo's information says that the Reuben you mentioned was the son of Timothy and Hannah and was born in1769. Marjorie
Annella, I'm curious to know if you found the name of your "Capt. RIGGS". I knew about Lt. Jonathon RIGGS. Maybe he received a promotion. What do you think? Jimmie Lou

Beverly, thanks for your reply. I believe that the Reuben Riggs you refer to lived & died in Giles County, Tennessee and apparently was NOT the same Reuben Riggs who lived in Warren County, Kentucky. I know that Reuben Riggs in Warren, KY was the father of my Jane Riggs--I have a copy of his original, hand-written consent to her marriage in 1803. Reuben Riggs who lived in Giles, Tennessee never lived in Kentucky, according to his Rev War pension record. Also, he does not list a daughter named Jane (Riggs Creek) or any "Creek" grandchildren in his will. Finally, this Reuben Riggs was taxed in Grainger County, TN in 1799, while my Reuben Riggs was taxed 1799-1803 in Warren County, Kentucky. Somebody please correct me if I have made any errors in my reasoning above--I'm new to Riggs research! Help! Does anybody know anything about this other Reuben Riggs?? Looking for more information about Reuben Riggs, birth estimated at about 1750. Reuben Riggs lived in Warren County, Kentucky 1798-1803. Reuben Riggs was granted 200 ac on Sinking Creek in September 1798, while a Timothy Riggs received 200 ac on Dry Sinking Creek in August 1799. Reuben Riggs was named in the estate records of Timothy Riggs, who died before 8 April 1805 in Christian County, Kentucky. Timothy's wife was Hannah; they had at least two sons, Daniel and Silas. Reuben Riggs was the father of my ancestress, Jane "Ginney" Riggs, who married Jacob Creek in Warren County, Kentucky on 1 June 1803. Reuben signed marriage consent, as did Jacob's father, Killion Creek. (Jacob Creek was aged 17 and Jane Riggs was 16 years when they married.) David Riggs married Nancy Reed in Warren County, KY on 6 March 1802, and Jacob Riggs married Sarah Boren in Warren County on 7 June 1799. David, Jacob, and Reuben Riggs are seen in Warren County, KY through 1803. David and Jacob are in Christian County, KY in 1804 and 1806. Then these RIGGS men all disappear! Where did they go? Where was this family from? HELP!
Looking for more information about Timothy Riggs and wife Hannah. I am estimating Timothy's birth year between 1730 and 1745. Timothy Riggs was granted 200 ac on Dry Sinking Creek in August 1799 and was taxed 1799 in Warren County, Kentucky. Timothy Riggs sold 108 acres on middle fork of Pitman Creek in Green County, Kentucky in October 1804 to Smith Tandy. Timothy Riggs was taxed 1804 in Christian County, Kentucky along with Jacob, David, Silus, and Daniel Riggs. Timothy Riggs died before 8 April 1805 in Christian County, Kentucky, when his estate was probated. His wife was Hannah, his sons were Daniel and Silas. Haney [sic] Riggs left a will in Christian County, KY dated 15 Nov 1815. Named sons Daniel and Silas as well as "daughters and daughters-in-law." Reuben Riggs of Warren County, Kentucky also had involvement with this family. Was Reuben also a son of Timothy? Can anyone tell me more about this family outside of this small time frame in Kentucky?

C. Chapman & Co. There's also a reference to a 2nd Lieutenant Jonathan Riggs of the Illinois Rangers in 1815 at the following web-site: http://usregular0.tripod.com/saukfox/ THE SAUK AND FOX INDIANS IN THE WAR OF 1812 By Michael Dickey, Site Administrator Arrow Rock State Historic Site Missouri Department of Natural Resources <quote> The opening months of 1815 offered no respite from Sauk and Fox raids. On the morning of March 7, Captain James Callaway and fourteen Rangers set out from Fort Clemson in pursuit of Sauk and Fox who had stolen horses from Loutre Island on the Missouri. That afternoon they found the horses being tended by a few Sauk women who fled at the Rangers approach. Despite the fears of 2nd Lieutenant Jonathan Riggs that they were riding into a trap, Callaway proceeded back to Fort Clemson the same way they had come. As they were fording the Prairie Fork a large party of Sauk fired a volley at them. In the ensuing fight Callaway and four other Rangers were killed. The news shocked the frontier as Callaway was a grandson of Daniel Boone. <unquote> ©¿© Geoff RIGGS - Chepstow, South Wales, UK ~~ Riggs Surname Study http://www.riggs.org.uk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (©¿©) Searching for { ~ } the Missing Link! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----- Original Message ----- From: "baumann" <baumann@netwitz.net> To: <RIGGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 14, 2002 8:52 PM Subject: [RIGGS-L] Captain Riggs > List Members > > I have a book "The Making of Illinois" by Mather, published by Flanagan > Co. of Chicago in 1922. Annella, I left off my message on my last reply to you. I don't have any idea that the following information applies to your "Captain Riggs." Cyrus and Aaron were in the war of 1812. Dick Webber Edmond, OK dwebber@rdsadvantage.com According to Elsa L. Riggs, granddaughter of Cyrus Riggs, the town of Three Sisters, West Virginia, was named for the three daughters of this Riggs, Rhoda, Phoebe and Betty. It was built on land they owned. These were the sisters of Cyrus Riggs. Elsa Riggs says the Riggs came from England, and settled in Northern Virginia. This later became West Virginia. According to Ted Matthews (1999) Simeon Riggs was the father of Cyrus and Aaron Riggs. Cyrus and Simeon fought in the War of 1812 together and were discharged in August of 1814. By December both were dead. The will of Simeon Riggs includes the name of a sister (could this have been a daughter? or sister-in-law? granddaughter?), Nancy, listed as Nancy Thomas. According to Ted Matthew of Santa Barbara, CA, 'The Thomas and Riggs families seem very close. John Riggs' mother was a 'Thomas.' Simeon was on the tax rolls in Menallen County, Pennsylvania in 1785,6,8,9. He sold land in Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1798. He died there , will dated 1808. -- according to Ted& Eileen matthew (tematthew@earthlink.net) in 1999. There is a problem with the birth dates of Alexander Riggs, his son, Simeon Riggs, and Simeon's son, Cyrus Riggs. Need research to verify dates of birth. If this Simeon Riggs was born around 1750, then he must not be the son of the Alexander listed -- maybe a brother?
