    1. [RIGGS-L] Re: Clisby RIGGS of Jefferson Co, TN
    2. According to a packet of information sent to me by the late Leo RIGGS on the descendants of Captain Edward RIGGS [1720--1820] who died in Jefferson Co, TN. My information and that of Leo is that Clisby RIGGS was born ca 1765 in either NJ or NC to Edward RIGGS and Jane BUCKLEY. Clisby RIGGS had a son named Samuel Moses RIGGS [1803--4 Aug 1859] who married Elizabeth CHANEY on 24 Dec 1824 in Jefferson Co, TN. Samuel Moses RIGGS is buried in Morristown, Hamblen Co, TN. The SIXTH child of Samuel Moses RIGGS and Elizabeth CHANEY was Walter Clisby RIGGS born about 1832 in Washington Co, TN. He married Barbara Malvina RUBLE 20 Nov 1850 in Tennessee. She was born 22 Sep 1833 in Washington Co, TN and died in Steelville, Crawford Co, MO 21 Jul 1891 at age 57. According to research of Leo RIGGS; Walter was counted as a student in the household of Samuel (Moses) RIGGS on the 30 Jun 1842 District No. 7 School Census in Jefferson Co, TN, and again he was listed in the household of Samuel Moses RIGGS in the 1850 Census of Jefferson Co, TN. Nelson V. RIGGS was born ca 1843 to Jesse W(yley) RIGGS [28 Sep 1805--29 Jun 1886] (son of Captain Clisby RIGGS) and Celiah CHILTON or Shelton [1808--2 Jul 1890] whom Jesse W. had married 25 Mar 1828 in Jefferson Co, TN. Jesse W. RIGGS and wife are buried in Ebenezer Cemetery in Hamblen Co, TN according to Leo RIGGS research. Nelson V. RIGGS married Sarah E. PALMER 10 Dec 1862 in Jefferson Co, TN. He was listed in the household of Jesse Wyley RIGGS in Bradley Co, TN in the 1850 Census and in household of Jesse W(yley) RIGGS again in 1860 Census of Jefferson Co, TN. I have email from 1999 that shows Clisby as father of Syrus and Elias BUT I have NO OTHER info that points to these two being children of Clisby. I have a deed of a John RIGGS from MD who died in Jefferson Co, TN in 1834 that shows a son Elias. Leo RIGGS research does not show EITHER Syrus of Elias as son of Clisby as far as I know. I have seen RIGGS researchers who were confusing Elias with Ellis RIGGS... I hope this information is useful to someone researching Clisby RIGGS. Bobby G. Carwile

    2. B Case
    3. Hello! First of all, I want you to know I doubt if any of this research will help you, because the Riggs family was really full of duplicate names from one generation to the next. Anyway, I thought the coincidence was strong enough that I would at least give it a shot. My Clisby ancestor is Captain Clisby Riggs, b. 1764 in Rowan County, NC. At least that's what my record says. I suspect he might have come from Morristown, TN. Some of my information shows that the Riggs and Morrises founded that town and it was by a vote of probably one or two that they named it Morristown instead of Riggville. :-) Capt. Clisby named one of his sons Walter Clisby. He is my g g g grandfather and was born in Jefferson County, TN. Another of his sons was Nelson V. Riggs, also born in Jefferson County, TN. I do not have a Cyrus or Syrus in my data base of Riggs. I hope that one of these facts is helpful to you. Maybe some of the locations will give you an idea where to look for more information.
