Surnames: Riggs, Rickord(s), Rickard(s), Record(s) Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HSDBAIB/1347 Message Board Post: Looking for information relating to a Rebecca Riggs who married Levin Rickard(s)/Rickords and lived in Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co., DE in the early 1800s. I find a David, Benson, Samuel and Nathan Riggs in Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co., DE in 1810-1820 period. David appears to be the elder (and maybe the father ?). They are near Levin, John and William Rickards. Levin Rickard(s)/Rickords etc. married a Rebecca Riggs and had daughter Amelia who married a Fleming. Our Benjamin S. Rickords was said orphaned and to have had an only sister Emily (?Amelia). Information was found for an Amelia Rickards whose parents were Levin Rickards and Rebecca Riggs of Kent Co., DE. We think this is our Benjamin's sister. There are three Rickards and the Riggs noted above in the area. It looks like William, Levin and John Rickards were there in 1810 and by 1820 only William (Levin and John's father ?) remains and has with him the three children of the 1810 census the ages of Levin's two children and John's one child) indicating Levin and John may have died leaving the children with their father/uncle. 1810 DE Kent Co. Census shows for Levin Rickards one male b: 1800 - 1810 (possibly Benjamin S. ? b: 1807 abt.) one male b: 1765 - 1784 Levin Rickards one female b: 1800 - 1810 (possibly Amelia (Emily) b: 1808.08.20 @ Kent Co. m: Rev. William J. Fleming) one female b: 1765 - 1784 (spouse: Riggs, Rebecca) one servant Amelia Rickards went to OH, then IN and Benjamin S. Rickords went to OH by 1830, then IL. Does anyone have anything on these Riggs and/or Rickards ? Thank you for your time and consideration, Wayne and Debbie

There was a woman in Texas that my mother had tried to get the bible too but the people that had it wouldn't give it up since it wasn't their line. Finally it has been given to me to find the family. 1. [RIGGS-L] TALE OF TWO CLISBY RIGGS, PART 2
    2. lewmark
    3. Part two of the tale of 2 or more Clisby RIGGS!! We have explored "my" Clisby RIGGS, so now I will move on to the other fellow born in the same time period and also in TN. When I become "king of the world", I will make a couple of new laws. One will be that every copy machine must function in the same way; and the other that a forename may be used only once within 3 generations of the same family! If in 1850 we could have gone northeast on what is today Interstate 75 we would have found Samuel RIGGS and Elizabeth CHANEY in the Jefferson Co. TN., 13th. Dist. census taken 28 Aug, 1850 with the following itemized children, all born in TN: Clisby, age 18 (This is not mine) Jane, age 16 William, age 12 Caswell, age 10 James, age 8 John, age 6 Henderson, age 2 Poor Elizabeth, she only had one daughter. Early on in my RIGGS research I thought that Samuel RIGGS and Elizabeth CHANEY were the parents of my Clisby, but I soon found the error of my ways and left this fellow swinging in the wind. I didn't find this Clisby in the 1860 census. But, I didn't search too much after I found Melvina RUBLES' husband Clisby!! I did however; find Samuel & Elizabeth's son in the 1870 Census of Witts Foundry P.O. Jefferson Co., TN. In dwelling 168/family 169 lives Clisby D. RIGGS, age either 34 or 37, (I can't decipher the writing) and shown as a physician. He and his wife Martha E. age 30 and the following children. Both parents and children were born in TN: Julia R. age 9 Samuel J, age 5 Allen M, age 4 Joseph H. age 1 At some point in my research I came across a Clisby RIGGS living in Marion Co., AL. I also have seen a slave Clisbie mentioned in the will of a southern planter. As I recall the will was administered about 1848/49. This person was not a RIGGS. I look forward to input from other researchers of these two families. Marketta in Madera. Researching: BARKSDALE, DRAKE, HARDIN, HOPKINS, HUGHES, LITTLETON, MOORE, RIGGS, RUBLE, STEPHENS, TOMPKINS.

    1. [RIGGS-L] "CLISBY RIGGS TIMES 2"
    2. lewmark
    3. Ancestors are so much like children. Some of them give you a lot of trouble, and others are never a problem. I am always having trouble with my 2X Gr. Grandfathers, Southey LITTLETON and Clisby RIGGS. On the other hand, I never have a doubt when I see Epaphroditus DRAKE that he is my 3 X gr. Grandfather!! One of the two Clisby RIGGS fellows born in TN, in the 1830/1832 time period is mine. We find in Bradley Co., TN., in the 26th subdivision dwelling 339/family 339, Jessie RIGGS, age 44 and Celiah Chelton (Shelton), age 40. The census taker visited on 5 Oct 1950 and listed their children, all born in TN., as shown below: William, age 21 Susanah, age 20 Clistie, age 20 (This one is mine) Rebecca J., age 16 Edward C., age 15 Nancy E., age 13 John, age 12 Nelson, age 9 Jefsel (sp ?), male, age 6 Mary H., age 3 Samuel H., age 3 months I doubt Susanah and Clistie are twins since there is a 4 year gap before the next child, but you never know! On 3 December of 1850 Henry Bennett, a farmer was also living in the 26th Subdivision of Bradley Co., dwelling 1733/family 1733. In addition to his wife and four children we find this fellow: Clisbey RIGGS, age 20 born in TN, and working as a farmer. Here is Clisbey living just 4 dwellings from the young lady who will be his bride! See below. In dwelling 1737/family 1737 lived the family of John "BRAZIEL" FRIZZEL and his second wife, Esther (RUBLE) FRIZZEL, her four children from her marriage to the late John G. RUBLE, and three children of Mr. FRIZZEL. The Ruble children were: Malinda, age 19 Melvina, age 17 David , age 13 Franklin, age 11 Another David RUBLE is shown as an 18 year old male as a farmer. Clisby and Melvina were in Crawford Co., MO in time for the 1860 census showing their four children. They were together in 1870, but by the 1880 census they had "split the sheets". Clisby is in the home of son Doctor (name, not a title) Franklin RIGGS his wife Frances Avery (HOPKINS) and there three children. Barbara Melvina Ruble RIGGS died in Steelville in 1891. Her tombstone in the Steelville Cemetery, Steelville, Crawford Co., MO., gives the date of their marriage as 20 Nov, 1850, but this census was taken in December and they were not living in the same house!? Clisby and Melvina were the parents of one daughter and 6 sons. Their oldest son, my gr. grandfather, John Henderson RIGGS marr. Melvina Annette STEPHENS/DANE Their oldest child was my grandmother Clara Anna RIGGS. She marr. Albert Walter HUGHES in Crawford Co., in 1898. Their oldest child was my mother, Edith Anna HUGHES, who marr. Charlie Orlando LITTLETON. And then there was me. Part two will continue the tale of the two Clisbie/ Clisby RIGGS. Marketta in Madera. It was in the 70' in the San Joaquin Valley of CA. today.

    3. I found this in the threaded archives...I suppose you have seen it, but titles of land were often found to take place, where there was a family interest for some reason. Sorry I cannot be of more help...Light- Christen The RIGGS clan lived on the border between Grainger and Jefferson Co, TN and the children are shown as marrying in both counties. It is obvious to me that the family moved together from NJ to NC and from there to East Tennessee together. The Edward RIGGS that I think is Reuben's father received 3 grants or Warrants for Land as payment for his Revolutionary War Service in NC militia. I have ordered them from the NC State Archives and I am haveing difficulty getting copies because of the red tape and regid rules for out of state ordering of Archives materials from NC Archives. The three land grants were: #428 for 1000 acres on South Side of Holston River adjoining Gideon Morris, Joseph Gilbreath, Sweltens Creek. #502 for 445 acres between French Broad and Holston Rivers #660 for 200 acres on South side of Holston River on Dry Fork I am hoping that the copies of Application for Land Warrants will yield some genealogical information. I have also ordered copies of COMPLETE FILE of his military record in NC Militia as a Captain from Surry County. Recent note from: DedGenes2@aol.com (Chris Wright) concerning Edward RIGGS of Surry Co, NC. "At a Field Return and General Muster of Militia #34, 20 June 1774, Edward RIGGS was appointed Captain under Martin Armstrong and Major Gidion Wright." mpattyw@elp.rr.com wrote: >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HSDBAIB/1341 > >Message Board Post: > >Does anyone know the connection between the Riggs and Holston families in the early 1800s in Virginia or East Tennessee?
