Try the Red Cross. I have heard that they will often help find people in the case of family emergency or illness. Did you check with the Social Security office? If he is receiving Social Security, they will have an address, or at least a town, where his Social Security checks are being deposited. Good luck. Hi, Bobby: We have no definite proof that we are descended from Captain Edward. Our Gggrandfather was Thomas Riggs who married Rhoda Casey in Alabama in 1821 and from there back we are blocked. Our ggrand parents were John C. and Elizabeth Jane Johnson Riggs who were killed by Indians in Bell County, Texas in 1859. Our grandfather was William Carroll Riggs (b. 1856) the oldest son of John and Jane Riggs. The purpose of this message is to tell you that my sister, Rhoda Riggs Nicol, has started putting markers on all of our family unmarked graves, as she and I are probably the only members of this Riggs family who know where these burials are. I hope you are successful in your attempt to get these burials marked for future generations. If you have any info regarding the parentage of either Thomas or Rhoda Casey Riggs I would be most happy to pay for copies. We also want you to know that we really appreciate all the hard work you have done gathering info on the many branches of the Riggs family. Mary E. Bobby, I have searched for quite a while for our Samuel Riggs, said to have been born in 1796, probably TN, or KY, and died in 1842, who married Sebrina Splawn, born 1806 MO. Is there another Samuel Riggs born close to 1796 who married a Sebrina...? in any of your records? It just seems amazing to me that I cannot place this Samuel in a Riggs line. Some of the same Splawn family of Sebrina, married Riggs in the Timothy Riggs born 1723 line of New Jersey. I am almost positive this Samuel belongs to that same line, but I can find nothing definite, beyond the other Riggs members who married Splawns, to go on. I have found our Samuel in the same locality in MO counties as Timothy, and others of his line. ???? Samuel RIGGS and his son Jesse Riggs Captain Edward RIGGS died in Jefferson County, Tennessee in Dec 1819 and is buried somewhere close to Morristown in Hamblen County. His son Samuel is in an unmarked grave close to RIGGS Cemetery North East of Morristown; the RIGGS Cemetery has the remains of Samuel's son Jesse and Jessee's wife and daughter. This Jesse is said to have served in the War of 1812............His grave beside his wife is unmarked. It would be nice if the RIGGS descendants of OLD Captain Edward RIGGS [1720--1819] and his son Samuel RIGGS [1760--1846] and Sams son Jesse RIGGS got memorial markers and placed all of them side by side in this ABANDONED and grown over RIGGS Cemetery. Historical records state that Jesse is buried beside his wife in an unmarked grave and his father Samuel is buried in an unmarked grave on an adjacent farm. Jesse could be placed by his wifes stone and then his father Samuel and then Samuel's father Captain Edward RIGGS. The names of Captain Edward RIGGS children and the names of Samuels children could be enscribed on the back of each of their stones with a note explaining "Exact burial location unknown" on the back of each. Captain Edward RIGGS [1720--1819] Revolutionary War Service is well researched and in Historical Records and his son Samuel made two applications for Pension for his service in the Rev War. One in 1832 as an enlisted man and one in 1845 as an OFFICER; as a Lieutenant. I saw somewhere that Jesse RIGGS served in the company of Captain Clisby RIGGS in the War of 1812........It should be recorded somewhere. NOTE: There were several Jesse RIGGS who served in War of 1812 from East Tennessee. How is all this for a suggestion. Would make a beautiful ceremony to place a stone for a Father and son who both served in the Revolutionary War and one for an 1812 veteran at the same time. WISHFUL THINKING..... Bobby G. Bobby: I forgot to mention the the DAR has no register of Samuel Riggs, they don't deny that he could be a Revolutionary War Soldier but no one has filed a request with proof. Maybe no-one could prove until the Deeds proving linagy were found. Good Luck, Jim H. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo! Mail AddressGuard
Bobby: I wish that I felt better about the good your letter will do, I have been to the Riggs Cemetery and it has not been tended in years. Huge trees growing next to Head Stones, the whole area is covered in Poison Ivy and other disgusting vines. There are 4 or 5 head stones in the area of Mary Riggs. The sister of the owner of the property promised to seen some pictures when the wheather gets colder and the Poison vines die back. This Riggs Cemetery according to the lady was a Colored Cemetery and they have never figured out how or why Jesse or for that matter Mary and their daughter where buried there. She was surprised to hear it was named "Riggs Cemetery". She is a lady in her 50's and both her and her husband are very nice people. The lady and her sister inherited the property from their grandfather. The Cemetery is really on the sister's half of the property. I believe the Archives of Hamblen Co. has gone to Hades in a Handbasket. The section of the Morristown Library that is the Archives is a mess. Books laying on the tables and not returned to their proper place. Tapes left open and not returned to the box, much less that the files. In complete disarray. I stayed about an hour and was very disgusted. That was the day I found the property and was shown the "Riggs Cemetery". I wish you luck, I got one response from my request on cleaning the Cemetery and it was from a lady in Florida. Again I feel you are talking to deaf ears. Jessee RIGGS and Reuben RIGGS served in Captain Daniel TAYLOR'S Company during the Revolutionary War according to the research of the late Leo RIGGS. Bobby G. Carwile
According to the research of the late Leo RIGGS: Jessee RIGGS and Reuben RIGGS (we think them to be brothers) both served in Captain TAYLOR'S Company. Was this in Surry Co, NC or in East Tennessee????? If anyone has any information on Captain TAYLOR'S Company in the Revolutionary War PLEASE share it with us. Bobby G. Carwile
Hi Bobby, I'm most interested in getting a marker for Jesse's grave, but I think we have to have proof positive that he is buried there. How strong are the rumors? Is this written in a book anywhere ? Was this a family plot or cemetery ? Any way to prove that he is buried there ? I'm in DAR and would love to see this happen--in fact I would be there with "bells on" ,if the good Lord is willing. I also, need to prove him as a patriot. I will try to get to work on that. The numerals 1817 on Rachel RIGGS Tombstone were for when the tombstone was set most likely.......All my research points to her name being Rachel EVANS. Please note that Jessee RIGGS brother Clisbe(y) married Jane EVANS. There were 8 children who inherited shares of the estate of Jesse RIGGS after he died in 1832. Their names are listed below. 1. I have never found the disposition of all of Jesse RIGGS slaves; number was over 18 in all. Jesse RIGGS served in the Revolutionary War in the same company with Reuben RIGGS, who I think was his brother. Jesse is rumored to be buried beside his wife in an unmarked grave.
