    3. Hi Anyone here related to Riggs who lived in Saline & Pulaski County Arkansas? These would be Leroy Riggs who was born around 1821 in Alabama. He moved to Saline County Arkansas about 1860. Leroy also had a brother named John L. Born around 1830 who also lived in Saline county about the same time.

    3. In case any of you are interested in seeing this again, I retyped it (excuse the typos). Rhoda Posted Nov. 25, 1979 on the Riggs list by Mary Bonsal: "Interested in seeing a picture of W. C. Riggs?" http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/4192/Rar1850.html "Message from JDRiggs: Hi Guys, (or should I say Y'all!!) My family of Riggs hails from Texas and I have quite a bit of info on at least this smart part of the Riggs bunch. I'm sending a small picture as an attachment that shows one of the survivors of the Riggs family massacre of March 16, 1859. The man on the left is Ambrose Lee, in the middle is W.C.Riggs, and on the right is Henry Riggs. W.C. was a grandfather aways back. Haven't quite figured it all out yet. Anyway, the backside of the photograph says, 'Ambrose Lee: was born in Perry Co. Tenn. in 1824 and lived in Ripley Co. Missouri for five years, in Izard Co. Ark. for twelve years, and arrived at Sugarloaf Mountain in Coryell Co. Tex on June 11, 1857; and resided in that vicinity since. He is well preserved for one of his age,and has a vivid recollection of events that transpired in the early settling of that part of Texas, being now in his eighty-six year. On that memorable day of the Riggs Massacre, as the old-timers call it, March 16, 1859; he was the first to go t! o the rescue of his heighbors, but arrived too late; as the husband and wife were dead, the two little girls gone, an infant boy trying to nurse the dead mother; and then from the tall grass, a few steps away, a small boy between two and three years old, arose and told him the little sisters had gone with the Indians; and the sight that met his gaze, was shocking. W.C.Riggs was born in Izard Co.. Ark. in 1856. His parents, John and Jane Riggs, moved to Bell Co. Tex. in 1857; and first located on Little River, near the Three-Forks. In the fall of 1858 they moved to Post-Oak Branch, near the west line of Bell Co. Tex. and about one and half miles east, of the Surag-loaf mountqin. On the morning of March 16, 1859, they were murdered by Comanche Indians. W.C. his infant brother John, and two sisters, Rhoda and Margaret, were afterwards taken back to Ark. by their grand-parents, Thomas and Rhoda Riggs. During the Civil War, they all returned to Bell Co. Tex and in 1870, W.C with others, moved to Col. where he now resides. Henry Riggs: An Ex-slave, who was body-servant to his master Thomas Riggs Sr. and J.M. Riggs, who was Captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He has resided since that time near Belton, in Bell Co. Tex. Henry is about seventy years old, is a man of strong constitution; and is highly respected by all who know him', "I left the spelling and punctuation as it was written. My line goes thru the baby John Riggs. The two girls were later rescued from the indians by their grandparents and were taken back with them to Arkansas for awhile. Hope you find this interesting as I did. The post by Pat Flathou jogged my memory and I kept looking thru the family archives until I found this. Somewhere I also recall seeing a picture of the cemetery where the parents were buried. J.D.Riggs"

    2. Rhoda Casey was the wife of Thomas Riggs (1802). The ????? indicated a doubt. I recently wrote again looking for information on the parents and/or siblings of Thomas Riggs. No luck so far. We have the book "Chicosa Bill" compiled by Mary E. Riggs. It has over 600 pgs with numerous pages of pictures etc. but no reference to either Thomas or Jane's parents etc. If anyone has any information, I would be glad to exchange with what little we have. 3. Bobby, What a fascinating newspaper article, especially the sting in the tail where he was buried despite having very belatedly shown apparent signs of life! It was exactly 5 years ago today that Rhoda Riggs Nicol posted a message to RIGGS-L, stating that a year earlier (November 1997) J D Riggs had posted a picture of W. C. Riggs. I've been back through the RIGGS-L archive, reading messages 82-92 which cover November 1997, but there's no reference there I'm afraid. 2. DAILY TRINIDAD NEWS Trinidad, Colorado August 4, 1882 Horrible Occurance: John RIGGS Killed by Lightning The News is pained to publish the shocking intelligence of the death of Mr. John RIGGS a young cattle man well known in this community, by a stroke of lightning. He in company with H. D. ALBERTSON and David FISHER were caught in the storm on Jrujillo Creek near the Spanish Peaks and started on horseback for a house some distance away. Before they reached it FISHER stopped under a tree while RIGGS and ALBERTSON rode on, arriving at the house they found it locked the family being away, they had dismounted, when the bolt struck a post in front of the house killing Mr. RIGGS and knocking ALBERTSON down as well as one of the horses. When ALBERTSON recovered consciousness he crawled to RIGGS who had fallen under the eave of the building and was just breathing his last. The Mexican family had returned by this time and soon spread the news to their neighbors believing that a murder had been committed a large number of people soon collected and soon afterward started with the body and Mr. ALBERTSON for the residence of the brother of the dead man Mr. William C. RIGGS near El Moro, arriving there yesterday morning, and bringing in this way the first news of this deatih to his relatives. Mr. RIGGS was a young man being but twenty five years of age was married and leaves a wife and one child. Mrs. RIGGS is a daughter of Jonathan DARLING another well known cattle man. John RIGGS was a highly esteemed citizen and his death will be universally regretted by the people of Las Anihas County. It will be remembered that a man was killed by lightning a few days ago a short distance above the city; in the last conversation that ever occurred between the RIGGS brothers John remarked to William that when he had to die he would like to have death come in that manner. He little dreamed how soon the expression would meet fulfillment. The history of the family is a tragic one, they are natives of Texas, when John was but a year old and William only three, their father and mother were murdered by the Commanche Indians in Texas two sisters age seven and nine respectively were taken captive while the two boys were left to die, this was on the Texas frontier. The next day after the massacre, the Indians believing they were closely pursued, abandoned the two little girls who were picked up up by some Rangers, and from them the story of the murder was obtained and all the children were taken care of by friends. The RIGGS brothers came to this country twelve years ago where they have since resided. The funeral for John will take place this afternoon. He will be buried at the Cemetery east of the city. LATER...... Since the above was written a most pleasing report has reached the city. William C. RIGGS after purchasing a coffin for his brother went home and discovered that John showed signs of life that gave promise of ultimate recovery; he opened his eyes and moved one of his hands. Dr. BESHEAR of this city was immediately sent for and repaired at once to the scene. The News will rejoice with the family of Mr. RIGGS should he be restored to life and health, and what a miraculous incident it would be indeed. He sustained his injuries in the afternoon on Tuesday and the symptoms of life referred to only manifested themselves last night fully twenty-four hours afterward. It was too late to obtain all the particulars. =================================================================== SUNDAY, AUGUST 6, 1882 =================================================================== The funeral of John RIGGS took place yesterday at 2 o'clock P. 2. Looking for siblings, ancestors of Thomas Riggs born abt 1802 in Kentucky or Tennessee. Thomas, Brannick and Rhoda are the names that keep repeating. I have come across a James Monroe RIGGS who married a HANCOCK in Tennessee. I am trying to tie him into this family, but not necessarily so. Many families used the name of James Monroe in their families. Has anyone come across him (Thomas)? He lived in Arkansas and served as postmaster and in the legislature for two separate terms representing Izard County, before a biography was kept of their legislators. He died in Texas 1867 swimming the Medina River. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thad Greer
