    1. [RIGGS-L] Stephen Riggs
    2. Hello List, If anyone has documented evidence as to the birth and parentage, and marriage of Stephen Riggs, please contact me. David Harrison Riggs DHRiggsLondon@aol.com Portrait and Biographical Album of Des Moines, Iowa. Published 1888 Stephen Riggs, deceased, one of the very earliest pioneers of Des Moines County, Iowa, was a native of Maryland. and when but a small child went with his parents to Kentucky, where his early life was spent upon a farm. In that state he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Riggs, a distant relative, who was a native of Kentucky, and daughter of William Riggs. In 1836, they left that state and emigrated to Des Moines County, Iowa, settling in Franklin Township, where Mr. Riggs purchased land and developed a fine farm. Here they endured all the trials of pioneer life, for at the time of their settlement the country was an unbroken wilderness, deer and wild game were to be seen on the prairies, bands of Indians were often in the neighborhood, and the dreaded howl of wolves were frequently heard at night. Mr. Riggs was prominent among those who helped to build up Des Moines County. He was one of the surveyors of Burlington, and his energy and enterprise aided largely in all public interests, and in the progress and development of the county he was prominent among the foremost workers. He resided upon his farm in Franklin Township, until about 1848, when he removed to Sullivan County, Missouri, where his death occurred about 1867. His wife died about one year later. Both were members of the Christian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Riggs reared a family of 14 children, all of whom were honorable men and women. Only two now reside in this state-- Martha Ann, wife of George Ibbotson, and Lutitia, wife of a. Dillon, of New London, Iowa. In early life, he was a member of the Whig Party. He always opposed slavery. At the first organization of the Republican Party joined its ranks. He was a resolute and conservative man, and highly respected in the community where he resided. Children of Stephen and Eliabeth Riggs: (Data submitted by Cleda Bass, descendant, of Pasco, Washington. She lived many years in Missouri before moving to Washington. She is the consultant for this family.)

She was Anna Isabel Porter. I suspect that she died during her first and only child's (Porter) birth, as his dad, Isaac Riggs, quickly remarried Nancy LaRue. Porter's dad, Isaac Riggs, died of a gunshot wound years later; he and Nancy are buried together in a family plot. I guess Anna Isabel (Porter) Riggs is there, too. I am currently looking for her family in (W) Virginia. The Navy tags of Porter's Christian Riggs - the grandson who was both the paternal and maternal namesake - must be very precious!! Tamara

Have you ever heard or seen a thing called the "Agricultural Census", It is supposed to be available through several libraries. They say the years 1810 to 1880 are available. I guess I have another thing to look up at the TSLA this summer. Jim H. 2. Donn and Peggy Neal
    3. I'm researching a John M. Vanderpool, who married an unknown Riggs woman in either North Carolina or Kentucky sometime between 1800 and 1812. My line is James Vanderpool, their first son, born in 1813. I note that James lives next to a Reddin Riggs in Indiana (Lawrence County) in 1850, and I am hoping to work back from Reddin to see if this leads me to the father of this unknown Riggs woman. She would be the mother of James Vanderpool. Reddin, born in 1800, might well be the uncle of James Vanderpool. If you are researching Reddin Riggs (who lives near James in Washington County, Indiana, in 1840 as well), I would very much like to be in contact with you. (My guess is that this woman's father was James Riggs, and if you are researching the man of that name who lives in North Carolina during the late 1700s, I'd like to hear from you too.) Donn Neal

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HSDBAIB/1419.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks for your prompt response Geoff.I have tried most avenues to find our Louisa in England, entering the United States and searchable marriage records online.I am aware of the Louisa Rigg of Upleatham but she was still there, aged 16,on the 1891 census. Our Louisa is supposed(as per 1920 US census)to have arrived in the US in 1888. In the 1920 census she was in Allegheny in Pennsylvania and her age was recorded as 39.If that was correctly recorded, and based on that having to be her age in the year prior to the census, then she was born in 1880. The death record for her son Robert(the 3rd)refers to his mother as Louisa Rigg of Bradford England whereas other records refer to her as Louisa A Riggs. To rub salt into the wound she named her first daughter Louisa A. There is an answer out there somewhere Geoff and I would be very grateful for any clues. Regards, Kev.

Where was she living in the 1920 US census and, more importantly, what was her stated age?

Surnames: Riggs, Von Barby Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HSDBAIB/1420 Message Board Post: The following item was published in the Baltimore Sun on March 8, 2004; they appeared online: Item 1: Dorothy Mary von Barby, a Howard County native who married a German aristocrat and was stranded in Germany during World War II, died Saturday from pneumonia at Frederick Memorial Hospital. The Frederick homemaker was 95. Born in Cooksville, the former Dorothy Riggs grew up on her family's racehorse-breeding farm and attended public schools. When she was 14, her parents sent her to live with relatives in Germany. While she was finishing school there she met her future husband, Baron Hans Wiprecht von Barby. The two married in 1928. The couple was living in Germany with their two children when World War II broke out. "We were stuck over there," recalls her daughter, recalls her daughter, Maria Nomita Brady of Bethesda. Baron von Barby was ordered to join the German army. Mrs. von Barby struggled to keep her family safe and survived several close scrapes, including once when her Frankfort house was bombed. Fortunately, she wasn't in it at the time, her daughter said. After the war, the couple returned to the United States, living in Florida, Washington, and for the past 35 years, Frederick. Mrs. von Barby's husband, who had dropped his title, died in 1986. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St Andrews Union Chapel, at Union Chapel Road and Route 97 in Glenwood. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. von Barby is survived by a son, Hans Wiprecht von Barby Jr of Evergreen, Colo.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
