Hi Richard and David I wondered the same thing! As someone living in the UK, I use the USGS National Mapping Information website to learn more about locations in the USA. By visiting http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form and entering "Isle of Wight" as the search term, I found that Isle of Wight is indeed in Virginia (and that there's also an area in Worcester Co MD by that name) Isle of Wight in Virginia is a populated place and also the name of the county in which it is situated. Clicking on the name in the Results page that you visit by searching will give you more info and, if you then click on the link to "Show Feature Location using maps produced from the U.S. Census Bureau's Tiger Map Server", you can see where it is on the page http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/MapServer?f_name=Isle+of+Wight&f_state=VA&f_latlong=365427N0764229W&f_type=ppl&server=TIGER David: when you refer to "A Richard Riggs by Arthur Smith", do you know whether this means that Arthur Smith paid for Richard's passage, or was the person to whom Richard was indentured, or what? @¿@ Geoff Riggs - Chepstow, South Wales, UK ~ RIGGS Surname Study www.riggs.org.uk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (@¿@) Searching for {~} the Missing Link ! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Riggs" <rriggs3@optonline.net> To: <RIGGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 02, 2004 7:49 PM Subject: Re: [RIGGS-L] Richard Riggs 1637, Isaac Riggs & Abraham Riggs 1687 > Is this the Isle of Wight in the English Channel? My third g grandmother, Esther Riggs, was born March 17, 1816 in Oxford, New Haven, Connecticut. Father Samuel Riggs. Esther married Myron Wesley Barnes May 27, 1832 in Middlebury, New Haven, Connecticut. That's all I know about my Riggs line. Have lots on the Barnes family. Can anyone fill me in on Samuel Riggs and the rest of the family?
I have a Job Riggs (Job may have been a nickname), who married Rachel Plummer, daugher of Thomas Plummer and Jean Ruggles, in early 1830's. I believe Job was born in Bourbon Co., KY, but that his parents moved there from VA. They had two children: John Riggs and Elizabeth Jane Riggs. I understand that Job was a mechanic in Maysville, KY in the early-to-mid 1830's. The family moved to Ohio about 1840. If you have any record of this Riggs family, please let me know. I have been searching for Job's parentage for some time. Thank's for any help you can give me.
Correcting an error, not that it's likely to matter: Surry Co., NC, NOT VA. I am looking for my Rachel Riggs, she was born in 1795 and married David Edwards. they moved from MD to PA to Ohio, then later family moved to WV. do you know her? Thanks for writing, Sandy in Florida I will gladly exchange family history if you will do the same. Please do not send jokes, virus warnings, chain letters or attachments.
Hello to all. I have been searching for the ancestry of Mahala RIGGS, b. about 1806, married Elkanah Lewis (the 3rd, I think) in Surry Co. VA. Mahala was a daughter of Lott RIGGS. Her mother was a ROSS. The evidence is that she was a daughter or granddaughter of John ROSS, Cherokee Indian chief. Recently I found Mahala's full name given as MAHALA AMANGAHALA RIGSBY RIGGS. I have noted that Amangahala has a bit of an N/A sound. I don't know how the Rigsby fits in here, although it sounds very much like a surname related to RIGGS. John Ross actually had very little Cherokee blood, or that is my impression. About one-eighth, I think. Maybe somebody knows more about this. An mtDNA test of Mahala Riggs's line shows that her ancestral mother was in Europe 10,000 years ago. Just one line, of course. I think I have a list of Mahala's siblings now. Maybe. If anybody is interested in this line, please let me know. I have found it very useful as it has corrected a few errors I had made. If you would like a copy, I will be pleased to e-mail it to you.
