BUTLER, 83, of Post Road, an executive secretary in the alumnae office of Pembroke College, now Brown University, for 10 years before retiring in 1972, died Saturday at the home of a daughter in Cumberland. She was the wife of the late John R. Butler. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Michael J. And Margaret J. (Cunningham) Murphy, she lived in Warwick for 40 years. Mrs. Butler had worked in the library of Rhode Island College, Providence, for several years. She was a literacy volunteer. She was a longtime member of St. Timothy Church. She leaves two daughters, Barbara Butler Schmidt of Cumberland, and Janet Butler Crook of Stonington, Conn.; a son, John R. Butler of Warwick; a brother, Joseph M. Murphy of East Providence; and four grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Ann G. Walsh, John J. Murphy, Margaret Hannon, James P. Murphy and Helen L. Murphy. The funeral will be held Thursday at 8:30 a.m. From Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 at St. Timothy Church, Warwick Avenue.
