    3. Good afternoon list, I am looking for the obit of Arselia Mellie Saucier Patenaude who died 26 Oct 1918 according to the SSDI. She was married to Edward (Edouard) Patenaude born 1885 in NY and do not know his death date. Thanks, Frank Odenton, MD

    3. Hi Frank, Well, neither Edward nor Arselia appear in the database of the RI Historical Cemeteries Transcription Project so no easy answer as to where they might be buried. My experience with Providence Journal obit for that period is that they were pretty basic. Not much information of genealogical interest. You didn't say where in RI your Patenaude"s were living so naturally there might have been a notice in a paper other than the Providence Journal depending upon where they were living. Woonsocket and Pawtucket had large French-Canadian populations so a paper up that way is also a possibility. I've never had occasion to need to look at an old issue of one of the newspapers up that way so I don't know what is available on microfilm. For the Providence Journal, the Providence Public Library holds everything from the present back to the beginning of the paper on microfilm and they will do look-ups and copies. Providence Public Library Reference Services 150 Empire Street Providence, Rhode Island 02903 Phone:401-455-8005. Main number is 401-455-8000. http://www.provlib.org/default.html Email at pplref@provlib.org The last time I checked, the costs were a $5 service fee with a charge of $0.20 per page for copies. You make your request with names and dates, they do a look-up and let you know what they found. Because they had a problem with sending the copies to people but never receiving payment now before they will do the copy you will have to send the $5 and the cost for however many pages of copies they've said your information is contained on. (Before Belo Corp. took over the Providence Journal, there were the traditional obits on one page and there could be a larger personal bio on an adjoining page so at least 2 pages for obit information is possible.) If you order your obits, wedding announcements, etc.directly from the Providence Journal all you will get for your money is a transcript of the information. You will miss out on any photographs that might have accompanied the obit or article and it will cost you approximately the same amount of money. I mentioned that there are other papers up in the Pawtucket and Woonsocket areas. they would be the Woonsocket Call which has been around since the 1890's and The Pawtucket Times which has been around sine the 1880's and was originally called The Evening Times. The Pawtucket Public Library sites gives the following regarding obits for out of state patrons: http://web.provlib.org/pawlib/genealogy.htm Pawtucket Times Obituaries Out of State Patrons For copies of obituaries from the Pawtucket Times, please send a self-addressed stamped envelope along with a small donation to cover printing costs to: Pawtucket Public Library Reference Department 13 Summer Street Pawtucket, RI 02860 Please remember to include detailed information such as exact names and dates. For the Woonsocket Call, the Woonsocket Public Library site gives the following: http://www.woonsocketlibrary.org/woonsocket_local_history.htm The Woonsocket Harris Public Library has these newspapers on microfilm: The Woonsocket Call: 4/30/1889-Present. The reference staff at the Woonsocket Harris Public Library will be happy to locate items in the Woonsocket papers for you, but request that you supply at least the month and year of the item's publication. The Woonsocket newspapers have never been indexed, which means that searching the paper can be an extremely long process without that minimum information. Woonsocket Reference Desk: 401-767-4124 Woonsocket Harris Public Library 303 Clinton St Woonsocket, RI 02895 With respect to a death certificate, at that point in time I think the state was still doing the ledger style death report where each deceased person had his or her information listed on one line across the span of two adjoining pages. I could be wrong but what really matters is that you can get a copy of the death report/certificate for a very reasonable fee from the RI Archives which has deaths up to 1957 and marriages and births to 1907. BMD after those dates must be ordered from the RI Dept of Health, Vital Records and they are not cheap. The fee was just recently raised to $20 per certificate. RI STATE ARCHIVES: Rhode Island State Archives 337 Westminster Street Providence, Rhode Island 02903 Telephone: (401) 222-2353 Fax: (401) 222-3199 Email: reference@sec.state.ri.us Web: www.state.ri.us/archives/ ~~website is poorly designed and pretty much useless from a genealogy point of view. Open to the public Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Deaths from about 1856 to 1957. Births and marriages from about 1856 to 1907. On 1 Jan of each year, another year's records are released so 1957/1907 will increase to 1958/1908 next 1 Jan 09. Anything which falls after 1957/1907 must be obtained from the RI Health Dept. / Vital Records. Archives also has RI State Censuses done on the "5" years from 1865 - 1935 with the exception of 1895 which is MIA. Hopefully, Arselia's DC/report will mention where she is buried. Then you can Google the cemetery to find contact information and give them a call to see if you can learn who else is buried with her. If it turns out to be a Catholic Cemetery owned by the Dioceses of Providence that won't work since all their records are by death date only with no cross-reference system for names. the exception seems to be St. Francis Cemetery in Pawtucket. They can usually help you. A strategy I have had success with for out of state burials is to enter a burial into the database of Find A Grave and then request a photo. They have volunteers who go out, take a photo of the headstone where there is a headstone and then post it to the burial in the database. It's a nice way to not only make a virtual visit but to also learn who else is in the plot. Yes, there are burials where for whatever reasons...money I suppose...the deceased never got a headstone. I have four instances of that so far. http://www.findagrave.com/ Hope you find the information you are looking for.
