KADY BROWNELL Married to an orderly sergeant of the 5th Rhode Island Infantry, Kady Brownell followed him to war, participating in the life of the 5th Rhode Island to such an extent she was dubbed "Daughter of the Regiment. Not content to support the troops in a behind-the- lines role, Brownell adopted semi-military dress & joined them in battle. Attached to a company of sharpshooters, she matched the other members of the company in marksmanship skills & was hon- ored by being chosen the company's color-bearer--a rallying point for her own comrades as they marched into battle, & a target for enemy marksmen. At First Bull Run [July 1861], an early Union de- feat, Brownell stood by her colors until the entire regiment had retreated. In a later engagement near Newbern, NC, Brownell's husband was severely wounded, & she moved him to safety, then returned to the battlefield in order to rescue several other wounded. Known hereafter as 'the heroine of New Bern,' Brownell left the Army & returned to Rhode Island with her husband when his injur- ies rendered him unfit for further service.
