Thanks, Lisa. I haven't talked to you for a long time! Hope all is well. I had already gone to "switchboard" as suggested by Elaine but found the following and didn't think it was right... St Mary's Antiochian Church 249 High St Pawtucket, RI zip code Phone: (401) 726-1202 I didn't understand the word "Antiochian" so looked that up on the Internet as well. It just didn't seem like what I was looking for. I wanted "St. Mary's" that has been in Pawtucket since 'day one." Will try your website and see what I find. Thanks to both you and Elaine for responding... Hi Kay - Nice to hear from you. I think the Antiochian is the Greek church. Heres what I know about Old St. Mary's which I think is the one you are after - St. Mary Cemetery 103 Pine St. PO Box 518 Pawtucket, RI 02862 phone: (401) 722-5425 Parish: St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Pastor: Rev. William J. Ledoux Address: 103 Pine St., P.O. Box 518, Pawtucket, R.I. 02862 E-mail: stmarypawt@cox.net Phone: (401) 722-5425 Fax: (401)729-0341 Cemetery: St. Mary Cemetery This is the one they also call Old St. Mary's St. Mary is the oldest parish in Pawtucket - 1828, then closed for a few years - reopened in 1835, I think. Then in August 1873, Sacred Heart Parish in the Pleasant View section was created out of St. Mary, and in January, 1874, it was split again for St. Joseph's which was across the Blackstone River from St. Mary's. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13020a.htm The Catholic Encyclopedia of 1912 is a great site with all kinds of information on the church. The link above is for Rhode Island. I saved this message from Al Rose from back in 2003 "In a February 7, 2003 article published by Maureen A. Taylor in the NEHGS Newsletter, there appears the following pertaining to Rhode Island Catholic church records: "Irish parish registers may be viewed at the Chancery Archives of the Archdiocese of Boston (2121 Commonwealth Avenue, Brighton, MA 02135)." You might want to write to the list, or to Al Rose AlRose509@aol.com to find out if he ever learned more about what records are at the Boston Archdiocese. Providence diocese was created out of Hartford, which was under Boston. I think the thing to do is to figure out as best you can when they likely died, and where they were living. If they were in Pawtucket, were Irish, then you might want to look at St. Mary. I don't know the state of the burial records there, at some point the old church burned down, and a new one was built at the same location. I don't know if all the records were destroyed. If you have access to heritagequest there is a book on there called Cullen, Thomas F. The Catholic Church in Rhode Island published in the 1935? I think. The history of the Diocese of RI was published by the Providence Visitor Newspaper. It is on line at http://www.providencevisitor.com/history.html Diocesan Cemeteries Office Director: Rev. Anthony W. Verdelotti Associate Director: Mr. Arthur F. Lurgio Phone: 401.278.4575 Fax: 401.351.5630 Best of all is probably this - Old St. Mary's in Pawtucket, R.I. from 1900 thru 1937. They are posted on the Southern New England Irish site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ussnei Bob Ryan ryanblack@cox.net posted this message to the RI list in June of 2005 Lisa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kay Stanton" <kay-stanton@cfl.rr.com> To: <RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 24, 2006 8:30 AM Subject: Re: [RIGENWEB] St. Mary's Church > Thanks, Lisa.
